7300 wont boot at all after 10.2 install |

HI, I was trying to install 10.2 on my 7300, and I was having some problems and I zapped the PRAM. After that the computer wont start at all. It simply powers the monitor for a second then unpowers it. No grey screen indicating anything. It doesn't seem to register any keyboard activity, like PRAM zapping at all. I've tried all the steps listed in the XPF notes, removing the battery etc. However the computer still does nothing. Also I tried on another 7300, and by reflex zapped the PRAM and had the same problem. So now I have two dead 7300's. Can anyone help? |

DEAR ALL, Thankyou for your help, the problem turned out to be having an PCI video card. I took this out and it booted fine, then I replaced it and everything was back to normal. |

Seems like another computer is dead because of your software. Michael |

Are you using the on-board video or a PCI video card? I had a similar problem when trying to make my Radeon 700 card the primary video card. I got the system to boot by plugging my monitor back into the onboard video port. Then i removed the onboad video memory and attached an apple-to-vga adapter to the machine to the mac thinks a monitor is attached to the onboard video. |

If you are using an XLR8 G4 card, you probably need to reinstall the virtual firmware from the emergency boot floppy. This was a recurring problem with the XLR8 G4 on my 7500 (even with OS 9), and I managed to return it and get a refund just before XLR8 went belly up. |

Have you tried to press cmd-control-power when you get a blank screen to see if you get any response? If your monitor lights up after you press cmd-control-power, then it's probably due to your system testing your RAM during a cold-start. This happens on my 8500 w/ 400MB. |

I don't know if this will help. When working with my 7500, 7300 and 8600 I got very worried about the black sreen of death. One day I left the machine with the black screen and went for a coffee. When I got back it had started doing things. Normmaly booting of a Mac OS 9 partion. I then worked out the black sreen of death lastest somewhere between one and two mins before it looked to other disks. In some cases it started up Mac OS X and the following boot worked OK. So it may be that the black sreen may not be the end. Just have a coffee or a smoke while the Mac sorts itself out. Playing with the battery I found was only needed in the very early days. |

I have found I can escape the "black screen of death" after by holding down a few key combinations: OPTION (to start up from OS9) CMD-OPTION-SHIFT-DELETE (to start up from a drive other than the one designated for startup) C (to start up from a CD) these key combinations have allowed me to recover from BSOD every time without pulling batteries and such--which I did at the beginning. So far, my Apple/Adaptec 2940U2B card will always send my computer into BSOD (10.1 or 10.2), as did my Initio Miles2 before it got a firmware update (3.20) for compatibility. maybe you have an incompatible PCI card? good luck |

I left the battery out all night, and the computer had nothing plugged into it. Also I tried with the original processor, still no luck. |

If you are using a G4 upgrade card, you could also try using the "emergency boot floppy" that comes with the card. It is possible that your problem relates to the speculative processing on the G4 card--the NVRAM patch which deals with that will have been removed when you zapped PRAM. Or if you have the original CPU card, you could re-install it to get things going again. It also depends on which device you are starting up from--the speculative processing issue seems to affect some SCSI cards the most--it does not appear to affect the built-in SCSI bus to the same extent. |

Make sure you leave the battery out for a long time (up to an hour or longer), and be sure to remove ALL sources of power to the machine, e.g. a connected Ethernet hub, a powered-on printer, etc. You'd be surprised at the small amount of power leakage it takes to keep the machine is a confused state even with the battery out. My recommendation is to turn off the machine with the power still on (pull the plug), then pull off all external cables and connectors, and finally remove the battery. I'd also recommend leaving the battery out for a few hours (from personal experience). Once you put the battery back in, press and hold down the CUDA switch for 10-20 seconds and then release it. This should be sufficient to completely reset the PRAM completely. |
