Upgrading to 9.2 for Classic & Apache performance |

Hi! Last night, I set up my 8500/Newer G3/250 with xPostFacto & OS X. Two drives, a 2-gig partitioned 1 gig each for OS 9.1 & Classic, and a 9-gig with 3 for OS X & the rest for server functions (web. mail, etc.). Aside from taking quite a while, I have OS X up to 10.1 (10.0.3-> 10.0.4->10.1). Now, I need to upgrade at some point, Classic from OS 9.1 to 9.2, yes? When I try to run the installation of 9.2 (it's a non-bootable upgrade CD :- ), I get an error that tells me to boot into 9.1 first. But,if I do that, won't it tell me it can't upgrade to 9.2 on this machine? Any suggestions appreciated. Also, has anyone had experience running Apache in OS X? What kind of performance can I expect? I decided to go the OS X route with this machine, because Yellow Dog Linux was becoming too much of a pain in the a** to upgrade. As I was installing the 8-20-2002 security patch on my G4, I realized I'd really like this kind of support on my server. If this doesn't work, though, I'll just get the YDL 2.3 CDs... Hmmm...Anyone know if Software Update can run totally independently? Or from the command line? Thanks! LArry |

No, Mac OS X 10.1 works fine with 9.1 in Classic mode. I'm not absolutely sure about Mac OS X 10.2, though--some people (including me) are having trouble getting Classic to work (but it works fine for others). I'm not sure what the issue is yet. |

Will look for the update tonight. I already have separate partitions for OS 9 & 'Classic', so I can still boot the machine into 9.1 if needed. I'm not looking to be able to boot into 9.2... I also seem to recall that OS X 10.1 required 9.2.x? Larry |

I run apache 1.3.26 under os x 1.5 and it works just fine. The bottle neck is the 128kbps cable upstream speed, not the apache/mac combo. Note that "running it" means I just turned on web sharing under system preferences, and made some mods to /etc/httpd/httpd.conf for my domain name and to customize where my web pages are located. If you want to use an IP address, and stick to the default location, you don't need to do anything to that file. |

Os 9.2.x is also a free download from Apple. So while booted into OSX do the download and update OS 9.1 form within OSX. You will no longer be able to boot into 9,2.x unless you do some hacks but it runs as Classic. It crashed a lot for me under OS X 10.x so I went back to 9.1 for clasic. I'm using 9.1 in OSX jaguar and haven't yet tried upgrading. Really see no need to. |

Visit www.os9forever.com - they have various patches for allowing you to install 9.2 on an unsupported platform. You can than use that as your Classic environment. |
