Hey -- I have a powerbook 3400c, I'm running 9.1, trying to install 10.1. One 30 Gig hard drive with three partitions. When I try to install 10.1 it hangs indefinitely. At this page http://www.geocities.com/frog2hell/index.html I have posted two horrible pictures of the screen when I hold down v as I boot. Any suggestions? thanks! |

There is a bug in the IDE controller on older Macs (like the 3400) such that Open Firmware cannot read past the 8 GB mark. This doesn't matter for booting Mac OS 9 (as Open Firmware isn't much involved in that), but it does matter for booting Mac OS X. The result is that, on the 3400, the Mac OS X partition has to be wholly contained in the first 8 GB of the drive. |

Hmmm... no ... I was hoping to stick it in the last 10 gigs. So, should I make an 8MB partition at the start of my disk, and install x there? Why? Also -- no pc cards. thanks! |

I have a 2400c, which is nearly the same machine, and it works ok (at least with 2.2b7, which I confess I haven't upgraded from). Two questions: is your X partition within the first 8 MB? It needs to be. Second, do you have any PC cards installed? Try removing them. Many 16-bit PC cards (especially ATA cards such as Compact Flash) cause kernel panics. Ivan. |
