Sound input support? |

Will the work to support sound input be focused on USB devices like the Griffin iMic, the RCA inputs on an 8500, or both? |

Hmm. There must be something special about USB sound devices. I suppose it must go beyond the standard USB OHCI specification. I'm not sure how easy it would be to get sound support working with a PCI USB card. Unfortunately, I don't think that I will get a chance to investigate this very thoroughly soon, so I would not count on getting a solution from me. Sorry I can't help more on this one. |

Apparently USB sound devices connected to USB PCI cards on machines without built in USB are not supported by Apple's OS X sound subsystem. This is noted on Griffin's website. You can see in the System Profiler that no USB is found under the USB section, and that the PCI USB card is listed as unknown under the PCI slots section. The iMic gives no input when switched to line in, and overloads when set to microphone, when connected to a home stereo's output. I'd like to know if it's technically possible to make PCI USB audio work, or I'll just return the iMic. |

Ideally, I would like to get sound input working on the RCA inputs as well as the mini-jack inputs (on other models). But I'm not sure when I'm going to have time to investigate this. My guess is that USB devices which do sound input might just work--at least, I'm not aware of a reason why they shouldn't. |
