9500 boots OS9 fine, but panics on Jaguar install |

It appears that there are two nearly-simultaneous panics when I try to boot into the 10.2 installer, so I'll just have to describe the one that is visible to me. For the record, the machine has 400 MB of non-interleaved RAM, a 300 MHz XLR8 ZIFcarrier upgrade card, the stock ATI Mach64 video card and a FW card and a USB card. I have low-leveled and zeroed the hard disk and freshly installed a temporary OS 9 copy to use XPF from, but no dice. When the system craps, the screen shows about an inch and a half of white/black static that scrolls up the screen with the text, so maybe it is a video card thing. Here's the scoop on the panic: MSR=00001030 Latest stack backtrace for cpu 0: Backtrace: 0x0008593C 0x00086F00 0x00028B8C 0x0008F648 0x000926B8 Proceeding back via exception chain: Exception state (sv=0x01814A00) PC=0x00077DB4; MSR=0x00009030; DAR=0xD0A80028; DSISR= 0x40000000; LR=0x00078010; R1=0x084939A0; XCP=0x0000000C (0x300 - Data access) Backtrace: 0x08493AB0 0x00078010 0x00061A34 0x00204F7C 0x00246BF0 0x00246838 0x126C8214 0x00213A38 0x00213834 0x00214184 0x002147E0 0x00204C60 0x00204C24 Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies): com.apple.driver.AppleGrandCentral(1.0.0f1)@0x126c7000 Exception state (sv=0x01811500) PC=0x00000000; MSR=0x0000D030; DAR=0x00000000; DSISR= 0x00000000; LR=0x00000000; R1=0x00000000; XCP=0x00000000 (Unknown) Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 6.0: Sat Jul 27 13:18:52 PDT 2002; root:/xnu/xnu-344.obj~1/RELEASE_PPC panic: We are hanging here... ------------------------------- Hope that's detailed enough to get something from it so I can get Jag on this sucker! |

A decode of the backtrace follows. It looks like it is a problem related to memory in some way. And it is possible that the memory problem could be affected by whether you do a cold-boot or a warm-boot, so that could be consistent (but I am not sure). You could try swapping out some DIMMs to see if that makes a difference. Or you could try just rearranging them a little (de-interleaving, for instance). Here is a decode of the backtrace. The PC (program counter) is at: vm_page_free_list_sort + 12 The LR (link register) is at: cpm_allocate + 136 The backtrace is as follows (the interesting part, at least): No symbol matches 0x8493ab0. cpm_allocate + 136 kmem_alloc_contig + 368 IOMallocContiguous + 100 AppleMacIO::selfTest() + 76 AppleMacIO::start(IOService*) + 184 AppleGrandCentral::start(IOService*) + 44 |

Here's something that might help with the trackdown. I was just able to boot the 9500 into the installer. I tried two unsuccesful soft reboots with the 3-finger salute with no luck. I remembered that I may have been able to get into it, and actually booted successfully into the installer after using the power button on the front to power it down, then power it back up again. Why is this the case? Any ideas? |
