PM9500 w/ 10.2 -- FireWire probs and SIIG ATA/133 |

I have a Maxtor 40 GB external FireWire hard disk that I am trying to use on my 9500 that (finally) got Jaguar running stably on it. I have the OWC FireWire PCI card, and it _works_, but not well. The hard drive usually doesn't mount, and I have to unplug it and sometimes disconnect the cable from the drive and plug it back in to get it to mount. I used my Pismo in FW TDM and it seemed to work OK the one time I tried it. Could this be a FW thing, an XPF thing, or maybe a Maxtor thing? I was thinking, once I got the funds to do it, I would put the SIIG ATA/133 PCI card in the 9500 and get one or two big (80+GB) hard disks to use for the main storage. Has anyone here had any problems running XPF and a similar setup? I think I would also want to get a speedier internal SCSI hard drive to boot from, but would do most of the work on the ATA drives. Good idea or bad idea? (Animaniacs just came to mind... hehe) |

I've had good success with ATA drives and cards, but haven't tried the ATA/133 in particular. One thing worth checking into is which version of the Install CDs has drivers for that card--I'm pretty sure that the 10.0 CD won't, but the 10.1 CD might. One other thing is that some users report "stuttery" sound or video from ATA drives (but not everyone sees this). On the Firewire issue, XPostFacto doesn't do anything special with respect to Firewire. So I'm not sure what to suggest on that. |
