Jaguar Unbelievably slooow |

All of a sudden, jaguar is running unbelievably slow for me. PowerTowerPro, XLR8 G4 450Mhz, 576MB RAM. Performance is absolutely pitiful. Right now I can't even use the computer - applications take minutes to launch, typing takes at least 10 seconds per letter. You get the picture... Does anyone know what preferences or files might be affecting things? I tried installing PCI Extreme before this happened and that seemed to set this off. However, I uninstalled it by running the Damage Control script and nothing changed. I think it may be something else. Disk Warrior reports no problems, I've repaired permissions using Disk Utility all to no avail. Any ideas or suggestions? I'm about to reformat/reinstall, but would love to avoid that if at all possible. One other thing - if I log in as root, things are faster, but there is still an overall sluggishness. TIA |

After all of your recommendations, I installed the Cache Control program from PowerLogix. Holy cow!! My OS X had always crawled on my 8500 with a 300MHz G3 NewerTech upgrade card. I assumed that was normal. No way! Now it runs like I would expect it to, keeping pace with my 500MHz G3 Pismo PowerBook. Wow! I love this forum and thanks for the tip!!! |

D'oh! That was the problem all right. I used Ryan's L2 Cache Config program to re- enable the L2 cache and presto! I was using PowerLogix previously - I may downlaod and install the new version to see if it works any better than L2 Cache Config. Thanks for pointing out the obvious to me! |

my card is an XLR8 400 pushed to 500 and it is running fantastic after I replaced the xlr8 software which doesn't seem to work with 10.2. another thing that helps was suggested on the Apple boards:... Run Disk Utility and select Repair Permissions from the First Aid screen.Repair the Permissions on your OSX disk. it will help the sluggishness too. |

Does this apply only to PowerLogix cards? I ask because I have a NewerTech G3 upgrade card, and am curious if this software would speed me up as well? Aric |

Try looking at your logs to see if they are reporting anything unusual. You can also open up the process viewer to see if somethings hogging your CPU. I don't think just having your cache turned off would make things that slow. It would slow things down but not to a crawl. |

bingo give that man a cee-gar! funny thing is I have lost the preferences in my cache control a few times too so I have to agree with Jiom. BTW, go to versiontracker, I think there was a new version of the PowerLogix Cache Control uploaded for OS X. Good Luck. |
