Anyone enabled Quartz Extreme? |

I enabled it for a few hours after installing 10.2 but did not see much benefit. All of my PCI slots were filled so I figured I would not have had enough bandwidth left over to do any good. I noticed a slowdown in some interface features like scrolling, and the dock magnification effect. This was ever so slight. However, Moving a transparent terminal window around is smooth and the genie effect is smooth as silk. I did not see artifacts while playing quicktime movies as some have reported. Overall system memory usage does not seem impacted either. I enabled it again last night to try it out again more extensively. Just wondering what other people's experience was. My specs are: Power Tower Pro 225 Sonnet G4 800Mhz 1MB L3 768MB RAM Acard Ultra ATA 100 Initio Miles INI-9100 UW Ratoc Firewire/USB Macsense 10/100 Ethernet (Realtek 8139 Chip) ATI Radeon Mac Edition PCI 3DFX Voodoo 5 5500 |

I've got it running. Compared to 10.1 on my 8600 w/G3 400, it's a huge improvement. G3 cards aren't nearly as fast at all that eye candy as G4s, and Quartz Extreme levels the playing field. On my Mac at work, it sincerely reduces system overhead, allowing me to get more work done. Yeah, it's jerky, but it's a lot more scalable. |

I have it enabled on my 9600/300. Works like a charm. I have the CPU unsanity haxie that shows CPU load in my menubar. Before when doing anything graphical, the CPU would get hit, hard. Now, Aqua does not 100% my CPU when doing trivial tasks. I can definitely tell that it is working and working well. The only time it would be inefficient would be if you are saturating the PCI bus. For any other task I would never go back to staright CPU processing. Prob keeps the comp a little cooler too with all that offloading. |

I have it enabled on my PTP as well and have had no issues with it yet. Most effects are much smoother and I think that I will leave it enabled. One thing I did do was put my Radeon by itself on the 2nd PCI bus and my SCSI and FW/USB card on the 1st PCI bus just to specifically avoid having the Radeon compete for bandwidth. PTP G3/450, 640MB, ATTO SCSI Card, FW/USB Card, Orginal Radeon Card, CD-R, 6 HDs of various sizes, and a Jaz drive, all internal. Britney |

I did it too. Nothing seemed to be working faster so I turned it off. PM8600, Sonnet G4800, Rad7000 |

I tried it for a short time as well. Browser redraws were faster, scrolling through the dock was jittery, not smooth with Quartx extreme enabled. Quicktime did have problems displaying a movie in the backgorund, screen artifacts and such. Resizing windows was slow but it is slow without it enabled. I'll have to try a few more tests with it but my mac seemed slower overall with it enabled. My specs: PowerMac 8500; Newertech G4 400mhz 1MB L2 cache(Rock solid in both 9.* and X.*); 1G RAM; U2W Initio Miles Card (2 36g Cheetahs and 1 36g ZX IBM attached); FirewireDirect USB/Firewire card (80g FW drive, USB video capture cable); ATI Radeon Mac Edition; Internal SCSI Hitatchi DVD-RAM drive; External SCSI Yahmaha CDRW; Lexmark Combo Printer/Scanner/Fax; Stylewriter 2500 Printer and 2 21" monitors. Everything seems to work in X.* and 9.* except the serial printer in X.*. |
