10.2.2 is a Godsend for Kanga |

After a day and a half under 10.2.2, I can say that this update is a Godsend for Kanga (ethernet/modem) PB G3's. Almost all remaining networking problems have been resolved! I didn't get the DNS resolver network death today! That beats my old record by ~6 hours! Even more amazing, my wireless card with the unsupported wireless driver (v1b5) works! Before 10.2.2, I could get a signall strength to register, and I could ping machines on my LAN, but I couldn't get my router's DNS settings (supplied by DHCP) to take hold. Now, it works. My PB has been SILENT under X, since I installed it. Today, I was surprised by iChat audibly notifying me that someone on my buddy list came online. iTunes played internet based radio as well. I still can't adjust the system volume with any effect, but I now have sound. The sleep problems remain though, but overall, a BIG improvement. -- Len |

On the tips and website, I plan to do this soon, but I'm in exam season, and am just getting over a stupid flu. Stay tuned. On the wireless card, I believe I am just using a 16 bit card. Specifically, the Enterasys (or Cabletron) RoamAbout 802.11 DS. I did make a tweak to one text file, that was not documented on the wireless driver site, which I believe was the key to getting it working. If you drop into the terminal, change into the /etc directory as follows: len% cd /etc You will need to add a line to the 'iftab' file as follows: len% sudo vi iftab Password: (enter your superuser password) vi is a unixy editor, so it has some quarks. Just follow these instructions. Move the cursor down to the bottom and to the end of the last line. It should look like: en0 inet -AUTOMATIC- Press [esc] - i (in sequence, not at the same time). This will put you into edit mode. Move the cursor to the right of the hyphen on that line, and press [Return]. Type this line, making sure to align the whitespace with the previous lines: en1 inet -AUTOMATIC- When done typing this line, don't press [Return], instead type [esc]-ZZ. Again, type in order, not holding down the [esc] key. The 'ZZ' must be capitalized. It should return you to a prompt. To verify that your change has stuck, type: len% cat iftab Quit the terminal, reboot, and then go messing with the network pane, and the 'Wireless Config' pane. -- Len |

I've got 10.2 running on my Kanga, and so far I haven't been able to get any PCMCIA cards to work with it. Is your wireless card a cardbus or 16-bit card? If it's a cardbus card, did you get the MCE upgrade or did you just jam it in? I'd like to be able to use a wireless network card with my 3500, but I'm not that comfortable sending it away. |

If you have any tricks or tips that would make the Kanga install easier for others, it would be nice to post a message or web site covering the all the details for others to see. With tricky installs of Linux etc, such sites have often proved very helpful to me. bill |

It's like Christmas in November... Seriously, I never thought that I would be able to get anywhere near this much utility out of this unsupported PB. Since it's architecture is so different from the newer powerbooks, I felt that I wouldn't be able to get past Darwin, let alone OS X. I mean from the C&T graphics to the non-cardbus PCI based PCMCIA slots this is a different animal from all of the sleek PB G3 series. I'm happy because for me now, the sum of functionality under X is greater than that under 9. Yes it took a while to get here, but the wait (and hassle) is nothing compared to my past tribulations with Linux on PPC or x86. -- Len |
