Rating: 5/5 Strong and silent November 27, 2017 I purchased this to replace the OWC Guardian Maximum RAID unit I had bought a few years earlier, primarily for use as an external drive for my 50K images - the main reason being it has the Thunderbolt connectivity I wanted to take advantage of on my iMac 2012 model. It has worked flawlessly in that time, and I am saddened by Apple's decision to kill Thunderbolt altogether (at least that's my interpretation of my new 27" iMac with Retina display having zero Thunderbolt ports). So now it's connected via USB 3, and still humming along like a champ.

Response from MacSales.com, Call Center November 29, 2017 I'm glad to hear that the drive is working well for you. Just to clarify, Apple didn't kill Thunderbolt. They recently switched to Thunderbolt 3, which is present on the new iMac. It does use the USB-C type connection instead of the Mini DP type, but it is still Thunderbolt.

Rating: 3/5 Middle of the road so far January 19, 2017 I had two WD Red 3TB NAS drives in an open enclosure configured in Mac OSX as software RAID 1 and wanted to move to a Thunderbolt interface. I bought this enclosure for that purpose. According to reviews and tech support, the enclosure doesn't work well with these hard drives using the hardware RAID, so I continue to use software RAID and configure the drives as independent.

Pros - solidly built, very sturdy, high quality. Comes with both USB and Thunderbolt cables. Easy to install drives. Has a pass through Thunderbolt port to drive my monitor. Drive sleeps properly and wakes up with the Mac, something that is not reliable with a USB setup.

Cons - hardware RAID doesn't work with my drives. Cooling fan is much louder (and a harsh noise) than I anticipated. This is very annoying - sounds like water running in water pipes in my quiet office. It's due to the air flow through the case - if I muffle either end with my hand the noise decreases significantly. Lastly, it's not much faster (if any) than my USB 3 setup I was using before.

Rating: 5/5 Awesome External Drive January 8, 2017 Bought this to contain my photo library for work. We were having latency issues with the photo editing and cataloging software because of the size of the library. This drive took care of the latency issues and finally the software was as fast as it should have been. Awesome drive, highly recommended.

Rating: 5/5 Oustanding Storage Device January 4, 2017 I have owned 6 other Mercury Elite hard drives and have been very satisfied with their performance. With a 6T storage capacity and the RAID function, this will be an excellent storage device to handle my large accumulation of files now stored on four separate hard drives. Using redundancy, I will be able to have a back-up copy of the files I store in case one of the hard drives fail.

Rating: 2/5 No ON/OFF switch December 28, 2016 Fan is louder than Thunderbay 4 for a unit half the size. No ON/OFF switch, so very cumbersome to use for occasional backups if the unit isn't mounted in a way that you can easily see the Thunderbolt port. Normally you don't need to see this if you can shut off power to the unit, but since you can't, the only reasonable way to re-mount the discs after ejecting is to re-plug in the Thunderbolt cable. Also has a firmware problem with El Capitan that will not allow disks to sleep (which wouldn't be such a big problem if there were an ON/OFF switch). I've had many OWC enclosures over the years, and this one does *not* live up to the high standards nor expectations of quality of the previous products. Returned for refund after a week.

Rating: 5/5 Super Fast Hardware Raid September 11, 2016 I bought one of the and populated it with a pair of WD Blue 4TB drives. I use Reds in my Synologies but OWC tech support said those were problematic with this unit so I took there advice. I have the Mac pro 2013 and it has 6 Thunderbolt ports and I wanted to take advantage of those for the reported speed. I must say that even though I'm using regular HDs (as opposed to SSDs) the Raid Zero speeds are amazing. And it's all handled by the box's hardware NOT software. I liked it so much I bought a second one and populated it with a pair of the WD 5TB Blue drives. I use Synologies to house my finished work but these are for my active photo and video files and the speed increase over the NASs and the external single drives is amazing.

Rating: 4/5 So far so good September 10, 2016 Does exactly what I'd intended it for. Two 4 TB drives that mirror my photo backups onto what seems like 1 4TB drive. Redundancy should one of the drives fail. Fan doesn't seem as noisy as some would think. Depends on how quiet your work environment is I would imagine. Cheers

Rating: 5/5 Terrific big drive for mirrored backup September 1, 2016 Have a 4TB drive with about 10 years worth of my work backed up on it. One day the backup drive didn't want to mount and I got really worried. Turned out to be a dirty USB port on my computer, but I took it as a wake up call. Went to OWC and quickly found this 8TB raid. Set it up for two, 4TB mirrored drives. Now I have two additional copies of my data in one sturdy enclosure.

Setup is easy and can be configured several ways, as with most RAIDS. That said, I must confess that I made a stupid mistake setting it up and was initially confused when it didn't show up on my computer. Called support at OWC. Got a tech on the phone in under a minute. Took him another minute, tops, to talk me through getting it formatted as mirrored drives.

As always, I'm totally satisfied with the product quality, price and speed of shipping I have come to rely on from OWC. Now I have had my first experience with their tech support. It is as impressive as all the other facets of OWC's service. They have long been my go-to for all things Macintosh and will continue to be. Can't say enough good things about them. They offer things that are hard or impossible to find anywhere else, they stand behind everything they sell and provide perfect service in every way.

Thanks again OWC for the great drive, the peace of mind it gives me and the fabulous support.

Rating: 5/5 Ample Storage with a Small Footprint August 19, 2016 This unit was ordered as a Time Machine Backup for a Mac operating under the El Capitan version of the Mac OS. The unit is quiet and operates unobtrusively in the background. It provides us with the Raid 1 mirror imaging we were looking for. We chose this unit because of our positive experience with an OWC 1 TB unit we've been using successfully as another external HD since 2011.

Rating: 4/5 Reliable and Fast, but noisy and lacks off switch June 11, 2016 I'd easily give it 5 stars except for the noise and lack of on/off switch. It may be the drives (Toshiba DT01ACA Series) making the noise, but it is noticeable enough to mention here. Also, if the computer is awake, the drives are running, even if I'm not using them. Again, wouldn't be a problem but if I'm not using them (I use them for video editing only), I'd rather not put up with the noise. Thunderbolt is worth the extra expense. The speed is great.

Rating: 4/5 Solid, but noisy April 25, 2016 This is a pretty decent RAID; the build quality of the case is good, and the unit arrived quickly.

Half a star deducted due to the noise of the fan, and another half star deducted due to the setup process (I'm running it in Raid 1 mode via Thunderbolt). The drive wasn't recognised initially, but I was able to format it successfully in El Cap recovery mode (Cmd-opt-R on reboot). Overall i'm pretty pleased with it.

Rating: 5/5 Superb Hard Drive April 11, 2016 Best hard drive I have ever had. Blazes ahead of all other hard drives I have ever had. I have only one problem and it is an Apple Problem not the hard drive. When I want to start up or do work on the mac, I have to unplug the hard drive at start up. Something in thunderbolt connection messes with the completion of the start up. I read up on it and tried all the solutions but could not get the thunderbolt set up on the mac to re-install the corrected firmware. I decided to wait Apple out. Did not do this at first only after an OS update. Right after the log in screen appears I can plug the hard drive thunderbolt cable back in and it is off to the races.

Rating: 4/5 Everything I Was Looking For, Except For Fan Noise March 29, 2016 This thunderbolt dual enclosure was everything I needed. It supports 2x 8TB drives. The drives automatically spin down on both thunderbolt and USB. However, the fan noise is indeed loud. I'm not sure if my enclosure actually has reduced sound, but the noise is noticeable and annoying. If not for the fan noise, I would give it 5 stars.

Rating: 5/5 wonderful piece of hardware February 18, 2016 I use one of this box at work, and it's amazing silent and powerful. Now I need one box to enclose two of my HDD and I'm so eager to receive it.

Keep up the good work!

Rating: 4/5 Great Enclosure February 7, 2016 I really like the enclosure that OWC products. I have bought several enclosures from them and I'm always satisfy. This particular enclosure was a replacement for a Mercury Elite AL Pro and I do welcome several improvements, my main points are: 1. Better packing. Notice right of the back it was a lot easier to get it out the box and put it back if needed. PERFECT 2. Although the manual explains where the from of the enclosure is, the word "FRONT" engraved or labeled on the closure to put it together would be better. NEEDS IMPROVEMENT. 3.Short Cables. I was quite disappointed about it, they were not longer than a meter. The USB particularly is quite short, half the distance of the ones from the old model, if you need long cables you need to but them separately. 4. A big difference is that this model have the mode selector in the outside not the inside, which is smart, but you will need a small screw driver to select the proper RAID/Span/Independent mode. A selector that does not required tools will be better. NEEDS IMPROVEMENT. 5. Interfaces. The old OWC enclosure I had lasted me so long and with several computers because it had several interfaces FireWire 400/800, USD 2.0 and eSATA. and as I move to better computers this new enclosure will make it easier since it has thunderbolt and USB 3.0 but I would welcome an eSATA connector. GOOD.

Overall is an amazing product and I'm very happy with it.

Rating: 5/5 good quality January 27, 2016 Prior reviews mentions noisy fans. This is used with my 2013 Mac Pro (a very quiet machine). Also a Pegasus R4 TB enclosure is hooked up. Altogether very quiet. NO complaints at all about the noise.
