1. Booting in RAID 0, RAID 1, and SPAN mode are supported via Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3.1 Gen 1. Thunderbolt 2 also supports Independent mode booting.

2. When connected via USB, the following limitations apply when booting in Independent mode: if both drives are installed, only the disk connected to the 'Drive A' cables will boot. If only one drive is installed, the disk will boot regardless of which set of cables it is connected to. Please check the Assembly Manual & User Guide for more details.

3. Not compatible with the following Seagate drive: Seagate ST8000NM0055, part number 1RM112-102, AND firmware version PN02. Please note that drives with the same model number but different firmware DO work correctly.

4. 3.5 inch to 2.5 inch SATA drive adapter required. Adapter not included.

Rating: 5/5 Great product, super service! March 9, 2017 My Mercury Elite Pro Dual arrived with the cable for the LED on the front panel disconnected. I didn't notice this, but did notice no LED when I powered on first time.

I got a call from OWC (Cynthia) out of the blue a day later and she was able to guide me through the issue. Apparently, a batch came from the assembly line like this and they didn't catch them all... no biggie.

I dropped a Seagate 2TB SSHD in slot 1 (my boot drive), and a 3TB WD drive in the second slot. I then installed macOS, migrated my Time Machine backup to the 2TB drive, and booted to my familiar Mac Pro 3,1 settings on a new Mini (2014 model). The 3TB drive contains an extensive iTunes media library (too big for the boot drive I had on Mac Pro), and everything worked flawlessly. The boot time for the SSHD is slightly faster than the 5400rpm drive on the mini, but once booted, it is far faster launching apps and documents than the native drive. I suspect this boot delay is due to the OS detecting the external Thunderbolt connected drives before initiating the boot sequence. Certainly not as fast as SSD, but then the cost of 2TB SSHD vs 1TB SSD is a significant savings worth a few extra seconds of boot time.

The 3TB drive is infinitely faster access, load and write than when it was internal on the Pro (SATA1). And copying files from the two drives in the Mercury Elite is lightning fast.

I was not interested in RAID, instead I wanted a fast external drive for booting (to avoid tearing the mini apart to replace the HDD), and a fast external drive for my media library. This product meets the needs flawlessly.

Some have commented on fan noise. Yes, the fan does make a bit of noise, but not so much that it is disturbing. Eventually, this unit will go in a ventilated cabinet that will mute the noise, so this is not a concern for me.

Rating: 3/5 A functional, basic, enclosure February 26, 2017 When I received this drive, I was a bit surprised that it wasn't a 2-bay version of the extremely versatile ThunderBay-4. The ThunderBay-4 is designed for drive hot-swap. Each drive is mounted in a rail-cage which is easily slid in/out of the enclosure. Installing drives the the Mercury Elite Pro Dual was not difficult, but required disassembly of the enclosure, screw-mounting drives and connecting cables (in a tight space). Two drives are installed so they sit atop one another. I'm concerned that this is less than optimal for cooling and may contribute to premature drive failure. Only time will tell. Overall, this is a reasonably priced enclosure, offering hardware Raid-0 and Raid-1. Its Thunderbolt-2 performance is as expected. My experience with OWC has always been positive and I expect they will stand behind their product.

Rating: 4/5 Great little box, fan could be quieter December 21, 2016 After reading several reviews of the previous model, I wasn't sure if the white noise of the fan would be an issue or not. Then I saw that the newer model was realized with Thunderbolt 2 support. So I pulled the pin and ordered one, along with a Neptune 480GB SSD, Adaptadrive sled, and a Toshiba 4TB HD. Now I feel like I have the iMac that I should have had all along. BIG storage from the 4TB HD, and super speed from the SSD.

My iMac came with a conventional HD installed. Since it's a Late 2015 model, swapping it out would be a pain. So initially I got a Mercury Elite Pro Mini enclosure with an SSD inside. I set that up as my system drive and that alone was a significant improvement in boot time and program loading.

But along comes this little screamer. After I set it up and cloned my existing system drive to the SSD, boot times improved by around 7 seconds. (and I was pretty happy with the USB3 enclosure) Both Apple apps and MS Office apps load a lot faster also. I don't have hard benchmarks on those, but app load time is about perception. My perception is that I will wait a lot less with this baby.

It's a well made box also. The drive mounting assembly and the outer case are all metal. I was actually a bit surprised when I first unboxed it as it was a bit heavier than I expected. It was also a bit smaller than I expected. Length-wise it's a couple inches longer than your standard 3.5" HD. But the height and width are just slightly more. The small footprint makes it easy to stash just about anywhere. All the mounting holes line up beautifully and installation was quite easy. The hardest part was reading the labels for which channel was A or B. (yep, had to grab my glasses for that--50 year old eyes)

Ah, but the fan noise. It's noticeable in a quite office such as mine. But it's not loud enough to be an irritation. What is most noisy is my selection of 4TB HD that I put in. So if you have quieter HD's or load it with SSD's only it should be better. I would suggest OWC employ the wisdom of Apple in this regard though. When my fans kick up on my iMac, I can barely hear them at all.
