"This is precisely the kind of project that John Lennon would have loved"- Yoko Ono LennonDelivering music and inspiration to young people all over America with the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus and OWC
The name John Lennon is synonymous with musical innovation, and a far-reaching togetherness that lives on today in
so many ways. One of these is the extraordinary John Lennon Educational Tour Bus.
Teaching, Creating, and Inspiring – on a Nationwide Tour
The bus, which at its heart is a full-featured mobile recording studio, soundstage and video
production facility, travels across the country visiting schools, colleges, music and technology
conferences and other events. The Bus gives students and young people all over the USA access to
state-of-the-art equipment and training, exposure to all aspects of media production, and
free hands-on opportunities to create original songs, music videos, apps, and live broadcast
productions. With the assistance of three on-board engineers and a parade of celebrity
mentors, students learn how to write, perform, record and produce original songs, produce and
shoot music videos and documentaries, and complete a broadcast-quality music video.
The "always-on-the-road" schedule, combined with the unusual requirements of
operating a fully mobile recording studio, presents a unique set of challenges for the JLETB crew
and the technology that powers the Bus's exciting programs. Because the productions generate huge amounts of
data, a reliable, high-performance storage solution is an absolutely essential requirement.
OWC is proud to be able to provide the foundation of the Bus's storage needs.
Making a Difference from a Solid Foundation of Technology
Underpinning the latest Mac Pro powerhouse that drives the Bus's mobile studio is the OWC Mercury
Electra SSD as the primary production drives. Each of the Bus's production Macs is paired with 4 x 960GB
Mercury Electra SSD's in lightning-fast RAID-0 configuration and housed in a Sonnet rack enclosure
as the main workflow drives. Delivering reliability, flexibility, and outstanding performance.
Delivering the OWC Advantage
According to JLETB engineer Bryce Quig-Hartman, using OWC SSDs gives them several advantages.
"Sure, they're fast, but also we just can't use spinning disks while the bus is in motion and
we need to be working while the bus is in motion" he says, "so having SSDs is a necessity, and
that's something that OWC has been able to provide." Thanks to OWC, the engineers no longer
need to shut down while the bus is moving, meaning they can get more work done, quicker and,
at the bottom line, give greater opportunities to more students.
"...we just can't use any spinning disks while the bus is in motion ... so having SSDs is a
necessity, and that's something that OWC has been able to provide."
– Bryce Quig-Hartman
Alongside the Electra SSDs, the crew also utilizes the ultra-portable performance of the OWC
Mercury Elite Pro mini, which Bryce describes as their "bread and butter." These give the JLETB
team amazing flexibility to work anywhere. Bus-powered and robust, the Elite Pro mini
is the perfect drive for loading a full project's data for quick deployment in any location.
To cap it off, the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus is also using OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual minis
in RAID-1 mode for reliable long-term backup, as well as the awesome power of the ThunderBay 4 in
projects requiring the high-bandwidth capabilities of Thunderbolt 2.
Supporting the Next Generation of Musical Innovators
Because so much of the production technology that operates the Bus's studios relies on a
foundation of dependable, high-performance data storage just to function, it's
imperative that the engineers have a total solution they can trust. We couldn't be happier
here at OWC to be able to provide a complete data storage package delivering consistent
flexibility and dependable performance so the engineers on the Bus can concentrate on
doing what they do best – bringing music into the hearts and minds of young
people across America and making a lasting difference in their lives.
Imagine what you can do with OWC.
