HGST

6.0TB Ultrastar® He6 Hard Disk Drive
Enterprise Class

3.5-Inch | SATA 6.0Gb/s | 7200RPM | 64MB Cache
Innovation for Next-generation,
High-density Data Centers
Delivering industry-leading quality and reliability
HGST delivers the world's first hermetically sealed, helium hard drive, the Ultrastar® He6 for massive scale-out environments. Why does helium make a difference? Helium has only one-seventh the density of air. Replacing air with helium inside a hard drive dramatically reduces the turbulence caused by the spinning disks, cuts power consumption and results in a lower temperature within the disk drive.
The reduction in turbulence for the spinning disk allows HGST to deliver a seven-disk design in a traditional 3.5-inch form factor. In addition to being the world's first helium- filled hard drive, HGST Ultrastar He6 is also the first hard drive in the industry to offer a 6-terabyte capacity. This design provides a 50% capacity gain and still reduces the energy needed to run the drive by up to 23%.
Technology Innovations Make it Happen
Through HGST's innovative and patented HelioSeal process, the Ultrastar He6 drive is the industry's first hermetically sealed helium-filled HDD that can be cost-effectively manufactured in high volume. This unique sealed-drive platform provides a path for higher capacity storage for decades to come while significantly lowering customer total cost of ownership (TCO). The inherent benefits of helium enable HGST's new 7Stac disk design with 6TB, making it the world's highest capacity HDD with the best TCO for cloud storage, massive scale-out environments, disk-to-disk backup, and replicated or RAID environments.
Note: This 6.0TB HDD utilizes a new standardized mounting screw pattern that is not compatible with older Mac Pro models. In a Mac Pro tower, you can update the drve sled to the OWC Hard Drive Bracket, or the drive can be installed in an empty optical drive bay using an OWC Multi-Mount Bracket for 2009/10/12 Mac Pro, or an OWC Multi-Mount Bracket for 2006/07/08 Mac Pro.

Rating: 4/5 Fine so far October 17, 2015 This is my first Enterprise Class drive. As usual OWC shipped it well packed and it arrived in working order. Something I can't say for other sellers of hard drives who toss them into a large box with no cushioning material and expect the heads to survive the journey.

The only negative I have so far is the heads are noisy. Compared to retail drives there's a lot louder clicking and, at least in a Mac system, its a constant 1 or 2 clicks as the drives are always being accessed for whatever reason (not Spotlight as I shut it down as a test). I would not put these in a media center room.

I would recommend this item to a friend!

Response from MacSales.com, Technical Support October 20, 2015 Enterprise Class drives are built for 24/7 usage in a data center or the like where reliability is critical, but sound level certainly isn't an important factor.

Rating: 4/5 Does not fit in drive slide MacPro 2012 August 8, 2015 I have an older hitachi 3tb and a Seagate 3tb along with two other 1tb drives and the screw holes all line up perfectly on the slide enclosure. With this HGST 6tb drive, only the front 2 holes match up now so I guess I'm taking this over to a friends house and have him drill a couple of holes in the slide find some longer screws and a couple of grommets. With only the 2 front screws in the drive is very flimsy. Once seated it feels pretty sturdy. So if you are going to buy this for a MacPro tower it will be sitting in the drive slide very flimsy. Quality of drive is fine but the screw holes have been spaced further apart on the drive.

I would recommend this item to a friend!

Response from MacSales.com, Marketing August 12, 2015 This 6.0TB HDD utilizes a new standardized mounting screw pattern that is not compatible with older Mac Pro models.
