HGST

8.0TB Ultrastar® He8 Hard Disk Drive
Enterprise Class

3.5-Inch | SATA 6.0Gb/s | 7200RPM | 128MB Cache
Innovation for Next-generation,
High-density Data Centers
HelioSeal® Delivers Twice the Capacity Using One-Quarter Less Power
One-third more capacity and 23% lower energy consumption. Available today. That's the power of helium. Delivering high capacity at 8TB, Ultrastar He8 is based on the widely accepted and proven HelioSeal platform. HelioSeal technology replaces air with helium inside the drive, reducing air turbulence and enabling 7Stac™, a seven-disk design in a traditional 3.5-inch form factor.

Ultrastar He8 goes beyond what any air-based HDD can do and seamlessly integrates into virtually any mainstream enterprise environment. Cooler and quieter with excellent power efficiency (Watts/TB) and no-compromise performance, the Ultrastar He8 lays the foundation for future growth in massive scale-out environments.
TCOptimized™ — Increasing Storage Efficiency to Drive Down Data Center TCO
HGST recognizes the growing pressures that data centers face. Volume is expanding, operating costs are rising while budgets remain flat. Lowering the total cost of ownership (TCO) has become the focus of data center architects. Ultrastar He8 provides a unique TCO value proposition and delivers greater storage efficiency with breakthroughs in capacity, power efficiency and performance.

This HelioSeal hard drive achieves up to 3X higher random write performance than the prior generation, Ultrastar He6, thanks to HGST media cache architecture, a disk-based caching technology. Designed to handle workloads of up to 550TB per year, He8 offers a 6Gb/s SATA interface for easy integration into high performance data centers. Features like Rebuild Assist dramatically reduce RAID rebuild times and maintain system performance during the rebuild process.
Data Security with Industry-Leading Quality and Reliability
Compliance and privacy requirements drive the need for increased data security. Ultrastar He8 offers security and encryption options to protect data from unauthorized use. Instant Secure Erase (ISE) models expedite drive redeployment and retirement. Encryption models protect data with hardware-based encryption, including a Trusted Computing Group (TCG) option with FIPS 140-2 certification, Level 2.

The Ultrastar He8 extends HGST's long-standing tradition of reliability leadership with a 2.5M-hour MTBF rating and a 5-year limited warranty. HGST's drive reliability and security options also help lower data center TCO.
HGST Quality and Service
HGST's Ultrastar He8 extends the company's long-standing tradition of perfor- mance and capacity leadership. The proven drive design enables high reliability and availability to customer data.

Ultrastar quality, performance and world class technical support and service provides customers with a lower total cost of ownership over previous generations.
Note: This 8.0TB HDD utilizes a new standardized mounting screw pattern that is not compatible with older Mac Pro models. In a Mac Pro tower, the drive can be installed in an empty optical drive bay using an OWC Multi-Mount Bracket for 2009/10/12 Mac Pro, or an OWC Multi-Mount Bracket for 2006/07/08 Mac Pro.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability rates.

Special note for specific 2009-2012 Mac Pros & 2010-2012 Mac Pro Servers running OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) and later.
While the HGST Hard Drive will still function inside one of these Macs, there is a mounting issue upon a system restart. We highly recommend a full shut down and restart of the system for the following Macs running OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) and later:

Rating: 2/5 Careful with older Macs May 15, 2018 I purchased this enterprise HD for my older Mac Pro and ended up utilizing it in my PC. The Mac refused to see it- I should say it saw it once, but not again. It could be my older OS 10.11.6 - not sure, but it didn't play well. The recommendation "Yes" rating comes at least from the fact that I did get it work, and usable. I purchased a reconditioned 6TB a year ago that ended up not working at all (but through my own delay didn't return in time). I formatted it in the same Mac Pro, and it showed up a couple times and then no longer. Again, I am not sure if it's the quality of the drive, or the age of my Mac and OS - which I'm hoping to get as much life out of as possible.

Response from MacSales.com, Call Center May 15, 2018 I'm very sorry about any issues you were experiencing with your HGST Ultrastar He8 HDD. With the 2009-2012 Mac Pros, we have seen some issues with these drives mounting after a restart. In order to get them to mount, it is best to shut down completely and boot fresh. We have this notated on the compatibility for the drive, and do apologize if it was unclear.

Rating: 5/5 Enterprise storage at entry level prices April 1, 2018 I have been a long time user of the Hitachi (HGST) hard disks and am very pleased with the new 8Tb Ultrastar disks. The are quiet in use and very fast at a price that cannot be matched. Well done.

Rating: 5/5 Great Price December 31, 2017 MacSales had these for a great price so ended up with 3 of these. Love HGST drives and great price for the 8TB. Only warning I may have, I have a mid 2012 MacPro. While these run fine you need the new mounting sleds the OWC also sells due to the screw location being changed.

Rating: 5/5 Works as advertised February 4, 2017 I just installed these 8TB gems in my Synology NAS. Others have complained about infant mortality but so far (24h) these drives have been fine. I decided to buy the HGST drives based on BackBlaze's analysis of drive failures, HGST consistently has the lowest failure rate in their fleet.
