Rating: 5/5 Great Hard Drive- Bad Shipping Packaging September 19, 2016 One of the best hard drives for NAS use. Consistently get the best reviews for durability. Unfortunately, my two hard drives were shipped crammed in a too small box with ZERO padding. Cmon guys these are hard drives and require decent packaging. UPS and Fedex do not treat things gingerly. Lucky I am not too far from OWC, as handling was minimized. So far they test ok, I hope their life is unaffected.

Response from MacSales.com, Tech Support September 20, 2016 Dear David, I am sorry to hear about the packaging of your hard drives. The drives we provide are retail packaged and the packaging of the drive is designed to provide plenty of protection to keep the drive safe from the rigors of transit.

Rating: 5/5 Runs quiet and cool…plus loads of storage. March 27, 2015 When my 1TB internal drive started filling up was looking at external storage solutions for a 2010 27" i7 iMac but was limited to firewire and USB 2 interfaces. Upgrading the internal drive from 1TB to 4TB was the best performance approach.

Happy with how quiet and cool this drive runs. Enjoyed the do it yourself installation process with the OWC supplied kit and on line instructions. Chose this model due to very low failure ratings vs other leading brands.

Rating: 5/5 Reliable & Lots of Capacity November 30, 2014 I bought two of these to put into an old OWC USB2 external RAID that I use exclusively for Time Machine. This gives me 8TB of wiggle room, and quite a lot of backup history. These things are amazing and work well in even older external drives.

Rating: 3/5 Nice drive but runs a bit hot in high ambient temps October 24, 2014 This model was the 4TB counterpart to the 2TB Hitachi that came with my 2011 iMac. There are positives and negatives:

+ Replaced my 2TB drive beautifully. + Installation wasn't too hard. The OWC installation video is great. + Good price.

- It has a high operating temperature if your ambient temperature is above 80°. After the Mac is on for about 20 min., the drive heats up and sits at 51-52° C when idle. When active, it can get up to 53°, though generally idle vs. active doesn't make much difference. Hitachi will only tell me that the drive is rated to operate up to 55° safely. Meanwhile, my wife's new 21" iMac runs its hard drive at a cool 27°, even when somewhat active. As a result of the high temp, my HDD fan usually runs around 5,000rpm, which is noisy. My high ambient temp is because I live in Hawaii. Most people don't have A/C, and it never really cools down here, even at night or in the winter.

Response from MacSales.com, Product Support November 25, 2014 The 4TB NAS Model from HGST has an Enterprise design base and was first introduced by HGST in early 2014. While the Enterprise version of the drive has been out now for more than a year, the design is very different and of a new platform vs. the 2011 2TB model referenced.
