Rating: 5/5 Highly recommend May 9, 2018 I've been on the lookout for a new external hard drive, for my exploding media collection, and I came across this hard drive. It didn't have an enclosure, but was a great value so I took a chance on this and a case for it. It is wonderful and quiet (great for being located near a bedroom), and I've had zero issues with it to this point!

Rating: 5/5 HGST Still the best! April 25, 2018 Have four of these running now. Three as replacements for 8 year old models, one in the Mercury Elite enclosure. Three are for backups of two different computers, the last is for files and seldom used apps for a new iMac. Access speeds via USB 3 are more than adequate and completely reliable and silent! NAS quality is a bonus!

Rating: 5/5 Excellent Drives April 16, 2018 I bought 4 of these drives for my QNAP NAS connected to my music server. They are quiet and work great so far. OWC has the best price at the time of this review. Packaged very well as with all their products they ship. I highly recommend these drives.

Rating: 4/5 Great Drives - But Loud when working! March 21, 2018 I have had very good luck with HGST drives. They have been very reliable over the years. So, when the 6TB were available at a great price from MacSales, I jumped at the opportunity. Be advised they make some clacking noises when they are reading and writing. I have 8 drives in a Synology NAS box and remote from my work area about 10 feet, so the noise for me is not an issue. If they are sitting in your main work area or inside your computer near you, it will be noticeable. Not sure why they have nosies unlike the 4TB drives I had before. I assume it is to improve the reliability.

Rating: 5/5 Good value March 3, 2018 I now have three HGST drives used for photo backup. They are quiet and fast and appear to be very reliable. I check their integrity several times a month with several HD utilities. No errors reported so far. My other drives are WD Black which are very good but more expensive. I've been very happy with HGST and consider them a good value for the money. Recommended.

Rating: 5/5 Quiet speedy NAS drive January 9, 2018 "You can never be too rich nor have too many backups." Part 1 (Part 2 is contained in my review of the OWC Mercury Elite Pro USB3/Firewire enclosure) I recently added this 6TB drive to my Time Machine backup arsenal using an OWC Mercury Elite Pro USB 3/Firewire enclosure, connected via Firewire to my mid-2011 iMac. Bottom line, the drive runs very cool and quietly for a high-capacity spinning hard drive on my desktop in the Mercury Elite Pro single enclosure without a fan.

Even after completing the first backup of the entire 1.3TB of data stored on my iMac for the first time, the drive in the Mercury enclosure was still just warm to the touch.

Rating: 5/5 Fast and reliable drive March 16, 2017 The HGST has received good reviews and was slightly cheaper than my WD drives. I'm using it with a NewerTech Voyager Q with a USB 3.0 connection. This transfers large photo files quickly for backup. Very happy with the HGST. My next HD will likely be another 4 Tb HGST.

Rating: 5/5 Best hard drives ever made January 11, 2017 HGST (now owned by WD) make the best hard drives on the market. I've used them for 7 years (Deskstars) and the Deskstar NAS is an improvement on a near-perfect product. I've used other makes of hard drive, but have found HGST (Hitachi) to have outlast the rest.

Rating: 5/5 Great Hard Drive- Bad Shipping Packaging September 19, 2016 One of the best hard drives for NAS use. Consistently get the best reviews for durability. Unfortunately, my two hard drives were shipped crammed in a too small box with ZERO padding. Cmon guys these are hard drives and require decent packaging. UPS and Fedex do not treat things gingerly. Lucky I am not too far from OWC, as handling was minimized. So far they test ok, I hope their life is unaffected.

Rating: 5/5 Runs quiet and cool…plus loads of storage. March 27, 2015 When my 1TB internal drive started filling up was looking at external storage solutions for a 2010 27" i7 iMac but was limited to firewire and USB 2 interfaces. Upgrading the internal drive from 1TB to 4TB was the best performance approach.

Happy with how quiet and cool this drive runs. Enjoyed the do it yourself installation process with the OWC supplied kit and on line instructions. Chose this model due to very low failure ratings vs other leading brands.

Rating: 5/5 Solves a storage problem! January 29, 2015 A pair of these drives, installed into my MacPro's chassis have been durable (so far), fast (the cache noticeable speeds things up), and have removed any fears about about storage being an issue in the near future. Easy to install and get going, run great in System 10.9.5, no issues at all.

Very, very please.

Rating: 5/5 Reliable & Lots of Capacity November 30, 2014 I bought two of these to put into an old OWC USB2 external RAID that I use exclusively for Time Machine. This gives me 8TB of wiggle room, and quite a lot of backup history. These things are amazing and work well in even older external drives.

Rating: 3/5 Nice drive but runs a bit hot in high ambient temps October 24, 2014 This model was the 4TB counterpart to the 2TB Hitachi that came with my 2011 iMac. There are positives and negatives:

+ Replaced my 2TB drive beautifully. + Installation wasn't too hard. The OWC installation video is great. + Good price.

- It has a high operating temperature if your ambient temperature is above 80°. After the Mac is on for about 20 min., the drive heats up and sits at 51-52° C when idle. When active, it can get up to 53°, though generally idle vs. active doesn't make much difference. Hitachi will only tell me that the drive is rated to operate up to 55° safely. Meanwhile, my wife's new 21" iMac runs its hard drive at a cool 27°, even when somewhat active. As a result of the high temp, my HDD fan usually runs around 5,000rpm, which is noisy. My high ambient temp is because I live in Hawaii. Most people don't have A/C, and it never really cools down here, even at night or in the winter.

Response from MacSales.com, Product Support November 25, 2014 The 4TB NAS Model from HGST has an Enterprise design base and was first introduced by HGST in early 2014. While the Enterprise version of the drive has been out now for more than a year, the design is very different and of a new platform vs. the 2011 2TB model referenced.
