Mercury Extreme® Pro 6G SSD and Data Doubler
Everything You Need
Add a second drive to your Mac
Use the OWC Data doubler to install a blazing fast OWC 6G SSD inside your 2011 or later Mac mini. This DIY kit includes all the tools necessary to complete the installation of the Data Doubler and the new drive. Coupled with our free installation videos that offer step-by-step instructions, you can perform the entire upgrade on your own.
Bigger, better, and stronger
The Mac mini is already an amazing feat of engineering, and you can pack even more power inside it with the OWC Data Doubler and an OWC 6G SSD. An OWC SSD is simply the best way to expand capability of your already powerful mini, and even better, you can do it yourself!
Starts fast, stays fast
Even though many SSDs use low cost, less robust components in their design, they can still offer enticing short term bust speeds which are perfectly suitable for light duty uses. However, those drives are not designed to deliver consistent sustained speeds over their capacity rating, which results in a dramatic slowdown to even hard drive speeds under demanding use.
The fifth generation of Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD was built to start fast and stay fast at over 500MB/s sustained. Its development began with using the best flash storage components and technology available. Next, after being nearly completely filled to capacity with data, it had to deliver the same high speed as if it were empty. This drive doesn’t flinch at any time or capacity level and drop read/write speeds like other drives do…it easily handles the most extreme, mission-critical uses you can throw at it.
The Right tools for the job
With the 5-piece Toolkit from OWC, everything is included to complete the installation of the SSD. Once the upgrade is complete, you'll have a handy set of tools for future computer upgrades.
While OWC encourages the DIY philosophy, this is a challenging install that requires advanced skills. If, after watching the how-to video, you are not fully confident of your ability to perform the installation, you can choose to have OWC "Do It For You" via our OWC Upgrade Service for Mac mini.

* A small number of 2012 units were shipped with the drive mounted in the upper drive bay rather than the more typical lower bay shown in this video. If you have a 2012 or later model, you will want to determine the configuration of your Mac mini's drives prior to ordering. To do this, open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app and click on the grey drive icon at the left-edge of the window. If you see "Lower" after the "Connection ID" at the bottom-left corner of the window, you may proceed using the standard installation instructions. If you see "Upper" then you have a special configuration which will need additional components, and you will need to also refer to the addendum video.

SSD works perfectly
September 20, 2020
The instructions were very clear.. However (my bad), I couldn't see the connector well and I broke the LED/IR-sensor connector from the PWB when I tried to unplug the cable. Fortunately, this only makes it such that the white LED on the front panel doesn't light and I would not be able to use an IR remote, which I never cared to use anyway. The memory works great in any case. But to everyone attempting this upgrade: make sure you can secure the connector base (female) on the PWB with some extra tool such as a needle or awl, while you apply featherweight force to the cable (male) connector! I would recommend this item to a friend! This review is from DIY Kit: 480GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD and Data Doubler..

Quicker boot
July 12, 2018
I was looking for improvement in my Mac mini performance and I knew disk is one of the aspects. I bought this kit to improve boot times with memory upgrade as well and the performance increase was easily noticed. The videos online and the manual that came with the kit explains step-by-step how to upgrade the computer, with disassemble and assemble instruction. The task isn't easy, but reading carefully and watching the videos, anyone with experience with hardware can do this upgrade. I would recommend this item to a friend!
