DIY Bundle: OWC Data Doubler Kit + 1.0TB OWC 3G SSD
OWC 2009-2011 iMac Data Doubler Kit, 1.0TB 2.5" OWC Mercury Electra 3G Solid State Drive and tools

OWC Internal SSD DIY Kit
Everything you need in one package to replace your 2009-2011 iMac internal optical drive with 1.0TB of OWC SSD power and reliability.
Configuration flexibility is yours when you replace your iMac's internal SuperDrive with the OWC Data Doubler. Bundle includes bracket, screws, OWC Microfiber cloth, suctions cups, tools and a Quick Start Guide for a complete all in one solution.

Then, just install the entire assembly into an iMac's 5.25" optical drive bay. OWC Data Doubler makes it easy to custom design how you want your internal storage to perform. Installed drives are recognized like any other high speed SATA storage device and can be setup and partitioned using the Apple Disk Utility Program.
Just a few of the configuration options you can enjoy with Data Doubler:
  • Combining a new drive with the existing internal drive for one larger volume (SPAN).
  • Combining a new matching drive with existing internal for high-performance RAID-0 Stripe volume.
  • Configuring a new drive as a Time Machine backup drive.
  • Formatting one drive for the Mac OS and the other dedicated for Windows.

You don't have to give up your optical drive completely if you don't want to. You can reuse the original SuperDrive with the OWC Value Line Slim optical drive enclosure for Apple SuperDrive.

*Professional installation of Data Doubler into an iMac is highly recommended due to degree of installation difficulty. OWC assumes no responsibility for damage that may occur during the install.

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  2. Rating: 5/5 My wife's 2009 iMac just got a new life! March 28, 2018 This is my second Data Doubler + SSD purchase from OWC and I don't regret any of them. First my 2008 MacBook and now my wife's 2009 iMac got a new life. The installation process went very smoothly thanks to great instructional videos from MacSales. Adding RAM to your computer is always a good idea but getting rid of old HDD in favor of SSD is a real game changer :)

Rating: 5/5 Speed up old iMac 2010! February 28, 2018 I am very happy with this upgrade kit. The advantages of having an SSD are incredible. The replacement of the CD tray with Data Doubler was easy. Although I have an iMac that does not support SATA 3, so the maximum speed of the SSD is not 100% usable.

Response from MacSales.com, Call Center March 1, 2018 Hello! I'm glad to hear the SSD kit is working well for you. Just wanted to clarify a bit. Your iMac does have a SATA II connection, which is 3G speed. This SSD would be able to run at the full speed in your computer! For 6G drives, that would require a SATA III connection.

Rating: 5/5 So worth it December 31, 2017 Before the upgrade, it had been taking *forever* for my 2010-vintage iMac to boot up. Opening MS Word took so long that it gave me time to get a cup of coffee before it was ready to go. Now it's as if the computer had drunk the coffee that I no longer have the time to make. Installation was successful (obviously) but that doesn't mean it went without a hitch. The most difficult part was disconnecting the connectors - two of the four were quite hard to detach, and you don't want to pull too hard on the wires. And reattaching the main display connector was quite tricky - hard to align properly and know when it's seated. And you have to manipulate the connectors in the small space created as you tilt the display away from the computer while still tethered by its cables. Harder than it looks in the video - but it all worked out!

Rating: 5/5 Easy March 5, 2017 The website is set out well and easy to navigate, information about parts and kits are comprehensive. Installation videos are easy to follow and are accurate. Ordering was easy, parts delivery was on time and when help was required live chat was a huge help. As someone who would normally not attempt the installation of an SSD and take the easy option to the computer store, the whole installation process was set out well.

Rating: 5/5 I should have done this years ago January 14, 2017 I'm a tech guy - and I've always played around with PC's. But removing the glass on my iMac had me nervous because I was afraid of dust getting behind the glass. I decided to take the leap and not only was it easy and simple. But I was able to clean out the inside of the iMac which had accumulated quite a bit of dust. The new SSD of course has made my iMac feel like brand new.

Rating: 5/5 Big performance improvement, see advice on OS install January 5, 2017 My late 2009 iMac was slow enough that I was considering a replacement, but after doing some research I decided to install an SSD and see what happened. I originally planned to replace the hard disk until I saw this kit from MacSales that would allow me to leave the original disk in place and put the SSD in the optical drive bay. I followed the videos on the MacSales site and completed the hardware upgrade in under 90 minutes.

I downloaded the latest Mac OS and installed it on the SSD. I ran into some trouble with the setup, and hopefully this review will help some of you to avoid the same trap. I skipped the Migration Assistant step during the OS setup, and this turned out to be a mistake. I used the Apple Migration Assistant later to move applications, files and settings to the SSD, and after the migration, the new user on the SSD could not access the files on the old disk because the new user did not have the proper permissions. I tried changing the permissions based on instructions I found on the Apple support site, but the procedure did not work. In the end, I erased the SSD again and started over. The second time I did the Migration Assistant steps during the OS setup, and this avoided the problem. The users on the SSD now have access to the files on the old disk.

As others have said, this upgrade has made a huge performance improvement for the iMac. Apps like Photos used to take 3+ minutes to open, and now they open in a few seconds. It was well worth the money and time involved, and it is not difficult if you simply follow the instructions in the video.

I also upgraded the memory in the machine from 4GB to 12 GB, but I believe the SSD made a bigger difference in performance.

Rating: 5/5 New life for my aging iMac December 6, 2016 I purchased this product (along with some RAM) to breathe new life into an aging iMac (Late 2009) and it did that for sure. I just wish I would have been able to upgrade the vRAM also... but I digress.

Anyway, I was a bit nervous to do the upgrade myself but the install videos provided by OWC, which I viewed before purchasing and during the install, was perfect.

At this point, I couldn't be any more happy with the product.

Rating: 5/5 Made my 6 yr old IMAC 3x faster! November 21, 2016 I have a mid 2010 IMAC and about 2 years ago, the hdd failed and almost lost all my files. After apple recovered everything from the hdd, I just noticed that my IMAC is so slow just doing some basic editing in LR5, CS5 and browsing the net. I made some research that the only way to revive my old mac is to put an SSD. I bought this kit from OWC and their instructions where pretty straight forward. I'm pretty good with tools but never opened a computer before, especially a mac. Level of difficulty is moderate, and I was able to do it in half an hour. I used a clone app to transfer everything on the SSD and viola, I tested it and the results are promising.. It's definitely 3x faster than the old system.

Rating: 5/5 1 TB SSD made wife's 2010 iMac FLY October 31, 2016 My wife uses a Mid 2010 iMac which had a 1 TB WD Black spinning drive. I replaced it with the 1.0TB OWC 3G SSD and HDD Kit for Late 2009 - 2010 iMac. The kit included 2 torx drivers which were needed and the suction cups to remove the glass as well as the 2.5 inch drive to 3.5 inch drive adapter, temperature sensor and adapter cable and cleaning cloth. The job was super easy after watching the video that OWC has for this model computer. The results were amazing. My wife's Silhouette Studio software went from booting in one minute and 40 seconds to booting in 38 seconds. That shaved a full minute plus off the startup of that app alone. It's like a new machine! She is happy and that makes me happy too! You should definitely order the appropriate kit required to upgrade the model of your computer when ordering your new SSD. The online chat help was excellent. This was my 3rd Mac OWC SSD installation. I highly recommend the investment in this upgrade!

Rating: 5/5 Really good investment October 22, 2016 I finally decided to purchase the data doubler + ssd and open up my iMac. My system (late 2009) was far too slow after with upgrade to El Capitan and I knew I couldn't help upgrading to Sierra, which could potentially slow my Mac even more.

The instructions on the site were very helpful and I took my time installing the upgrade (replacing the optical drive).

The result is amazing, my Mac is now a new machine, fast, responsive, with more available space (as I now have the ssd + the original hard drive).

I would recommend this upgrade to anyone, but please be careful opening up your Mac.

Rating: 5/5 Better than expected July 22, 2016 I was a little concerned about doing this upgrade because I honestly didn't know anyone who had replaced the internal DVD drive of an iMac with a SSD. The installation video made the job appear to be doable, however, and when I got the kit it pretty much was. The only real hang-ups came from my own poor manual dexterity; otherwise, I was able to open the iMac, pull the old DVD drive, install the SSD in its holder, install the new drive, and close everything back up with no problems thanks to the video's attention to such details as showing which side of the connectors should face outward.

What is even more striking is how much of a difference this upgrade has made in my late-2009 iMac's performance. Before, it was taking at least a minute to boot to the login screen and several minutes to fully log me in to my user with all of the Finder icons showing. Now, I get the login screen within 30 seconds, and logging in take no more and usually less time than that. It probably helps that I did a fresh installation of El Capitan and then used the Migration Assistant to move applications over, but even that only took a few hours.

Overall, I initially thought the machine's performance after the upgrade would be a little better, but it's actually a lot better. The only really speed bumps are things that can't be upgraded like the video processor and RAM. Still, this upgrade should give me at least a few more years of daily use from a seven-year-old machine, and if the iMac finally dies I can pull the SSD and use it again.

Rating: 5/5 7 year old mac runs like new January 31, 2016 I replaced my broken optical drive with this SSD and installed El Capitan and all of my apps on it. I now keep my iPhoto library and iTunes library on my internal 2 GB hard drive. Installation was simple. Just remember to reattach the thermal sensor that was glued to the top of your optical drive, or else the fan will run at full speed.

The speed improvement is amazing! If you use your 2009 iMac for mostly web-browsing, emailing, working with office docs, and managing your media files, this upgrade, I'm certain, will keep you satisfied for a couple more years.

I knew the hard drive was to blame. Looked into getting a new iMac but didn't want to drop $3k! This solution is incredible. My boot times are less than 30 seconds. Zippy all round now as OS X is optimized for SSD based Macs. I might even switch out my old hard drive with an SSD.

Rating: 5/5 Easier than I expected - Super results August 31, 2015 I went into this upgrade with trepidation. I wanted to create a Fusion drive with the extra SSD installed. I had never taken my iMac apart, I wasn't sure that I could make the Fusion drive work and I wondered if simply putting the SSD on the optical drive bus was going to cut it.

I shouldn't have worried. The kit had everything I needed, instructions were easy to follow and the iMac is now a screamin' machine! I am extremely happy about the whole transaction. To get such an astonishing speed boost for so little money is a great thing!

Word of caution. The day after I took out the optical drive, I put an SD card into the empty optical drive slot instead of the SD card slot. It fell deep into the bowels of the iMac. Luckily the skills I had honed the day before gave me the confidence to pull off the screen and fish it out. But I recommend you put something over the empty slot just to keep things simple.

Rating: 5/5 Fantastic upgrade to older iMac July 16, 2015 My 2009 iMac was seeming slow compared to a MBP with SSD, but replacing its rarely-used DVD drive with the data doubler SSD has given it a new lease on life. With a clean install of 10.10.4 on the SSD, along with most commonly used apps, it boots and runs soooo much faster! Plus I put the old superdrive (DVD) in a OWC case so now I have an external DVD when needed. OWC comes through with a great product at a good price, yet again! Installation was fairly easy, but I've replaced a fair number of "non-user-serviceable" parts in the past. YMMV.

Rating: 5/5 Awesome Product! January 15, 2015 This kit had everything you'd need for a super efficient SSD upgrade. I found it easy to install as long as you're patient and don't force anything too hard. I recommend a static free environment just in case but I didn't have one. When transfering your old OSX drive to the SSD just use the restore tab in the disk utility application, it worked perfectly with my iMac 10,1. Don't forget to backup everything just in case!!! Customer service is great too! OWC is the best!

Rating: 5/5 Added a few years of life January 9, 2015 Upgrading my Late 2009 iMac to an SSD drive has added a few more years of life to a system that was usable, but slowing down. This was easy to install using the data doubler and toolset.

Rating: 5/5 Like a new computer for $350! September 25, 2014 Just when I was about to give up my aging mid-2009 iMac for a newer machine, a friend convinced me to buy the OWC DIY Data Doubler Kit. Installation was fairly simple for anyone who's halfway handy, due to the provided instructions and video. The included toolkit was also a godsend. My computer now boots in a fraction of the time, and apps open almost instantly. The SuperDrive that I removed to make room for the SSD drive went into a $30 OWC external case. The results were so good I ordered another Data Doubler kit for my wife's iMac.

Rating: 5/5 This set is very complete September 20, 2014 I received the goods in good order. Together with your instruction video I managed to remove the optical drive and install the SSD myself. My iMac is a lot quicker now. Thank you

Rating: 5/5 Easy to install, gave me a new computer July 31, 2014 I thought my imac was pretty fast until I installed the data doubler kit. Instructions are the best to install but end result was phenomenal! Now no lag time at all in opening and closing programs. Don't buy ram, get the SSD!
