OWC Data Doubler
Mac mini 2009 Optical Bay Hard Drive / SSD Mounting Solution

Mac mini 2009 data doubler drive not included
Includes everything needed to replace your optical drive with
a second hard drive or SSD
Boost your storage capacity by adding up to an additional 1.5TB of internal storage with a second hard drive, or enjoy near-instantaneous boot and app loading times by adding a Solid State Drive (SSD).

Configuration flexibility is yours when you replace your 2009 Mac mini's internal SuperDrive with an OWC Data Doubler with a hard drive or SSD. The custom-engineered Data Doubler bracket comes ready to mount any 2.5" SATA drive up to 12.5mm in height.

Once you've installed the entire Data Doubler drive assembly into your 2009 Mac mini's optical drive bay, you can customize how you want your internal storage to perform. Drive customization is easy and built right into OS X as the new Data Doubler mounted drive can be setup using Apple's Disk Utility program in which you can format the drive, create a RAID array using two drives together, or partition the new drive. Once formatted you can also setup the second drive as a Time Machine backup so you can take your backup with your wherever you go.

OWC provides free installation videos that guide this DIY upgrade step-by-step for each specific Mac model. Data Doubler also comes backed by OWC's award-winning U.S.A. based technical support team which is readily available to assist you with your upgrade should you have any questions.

You don't have to give up your optical drive completely if you don't want to. You can reuse the original SuperDrive with the OWC Value Line Slim optical drive enclosure for Apple SuperDrive.
Special note for the 2009 Mac mini.

We highly recommend the use of a SATA 2.0 (3Gb/s) SSD such as the OWC Mercury Electra 3G for this Mac

While 6G SSDs do function, some only do so at SATA Revision 1.0 (1.5Gb/s, 150MB/s) speeds rather that the SATA Revision 2.0 (3.0Gb/s 300MB/s) speed the computer can deliver.

Rating: 5/5 Extra options for older hardware September 12, 2016 I mounted the drive doubler in our late 2009 Mac Mini and used two identical Toshiba 2TB drives, one in the original position and one in the doubler. I then used OS X Lion installer to format the drives in a RAID 0 configuration (El Capitan won't do it natively) , which is then recognised as a single 4TB drive. I then signed in to the app store and upgraded to El Capitan. The RAID setup was recognised and remained stable. I then set up Carbon Copy Cloner and connected a MiniStack Classic 5TB external drive (another great OWC purchase) for daily backups at 3am. Last but not least i connected a headless graphics accelerator, activated remote screen sharing and there you have it... one iTunes server.

Rating: 5/5 What a difference an SSD makes August 25, 2015 Ever since 2010, I've been using OWC Data Doublers to make MacBook Pros scream with speed — for myself, my kids and for business partners. Loading your OS and Applications onto a SSD, and accessing your user folders, files and documents from a platter-based DH make for a remarkable mix of speed and storage. As long as you've got a reasonable amount of RAM in your MBP or Mac Mini, an SSD solves the info bottleneck that hampered most 2007-2012 laptops: spinning, platter-based drives. Still a "must" for those who want both speed and storage in an older laptop, and for my money a much better investment than a new computer if your MBP is from 2009 or later.

Rating: 5/5 Adds value to older Mac mini October 12, 2014 I recently replaced the hard drive in a 2009 Mac mini with an OWC SSD. I hardly use the built-in optical drive these days, and I have an external USB optical drive that I can connect when needed. So, I decided to replace the Mac mini's optical drive with a second internal drive, a standard 2.5-inch 1TB hard drive, at the same time.

The printed instruction booklet is well-illustrated. However, I used the online video OWC provides. Mount the 2.5-inch drive on the Data Doubler, remove the optical drive, and mount the Data Doubler assembly in its place. The connection used by the optical drive is used directly with the new drive. This older Mac mini is now a nice "media server."

The kit comes with a set of five tools. It appears to be the same item OWC sells separately as "OWC 5-Piece Mini Toolkit." Curiously, I only needed the small Phillips head screwdriver (which I had already). But it's a classy touch to include the tool set.

Rating: 5/5 Perfect fot for 2009 Mac Mini August 10, 2014 Data Doubler is custom made for the 2009 Mac Mini. Screw holes line up and overall frame mounts into old superdrive slot very well. Although the installation is listed as "advanced" I'd say a beginner with good mechanical skills could do the job. The included OWC installation booklet showed detailed images of installation.

Rating: 5/5 so awesome January 4, 2014 I installed this data doubler with an SSD I had laying around. It was a breeze. The hardest part was getting the dang putty knife in the tiny crack to get the case off. I do recommend watching the installation video that OWC has posted. Unless you're a pro and do this stuff for a living, the walk through is quite helpful. My kit also came with a small tool set consisting of 4 screwdrivers (2 torx, 1 phillips, and 1 flat) and a pry tool. I didn't see this anywhere in the description, so I actually ordered the exact same set. No big deal though. Now I have spares, just in case. The screwdrivers are also lightly magnetized, which really helps out with these tiny screws.

Rating: 5/5 Fits in iMac 2009 DVD Bay January 5, 2013 I wanted to replace my DVD drive with an SSD to have a fusion drive in my 2009 iMac. This mount was a direct replacement for the DVD drive. Everything fit nicely inside the iMac. I had no problems with installation. Owc even included a toolkit with my purchase and all tools provided worked with the iMac. I was able to swap the drive by disconnecting two out of the 4 ca les hooded to the screen. Use needle nose pliers to get the temp sensor off the internal DVD drive and replace it on your ssd. Took only 25 minutes to do the swap thanks to this carrier. It is made out of metal and not plastic like other cheaper units. I used m4 SSD make sure you upgrade to latest firmware before trying to use drive for stable performance.
