Boost your storage capacity by adding up to an additional 2.0TB of internal storage with a second hard drive, or enjoy near-instantaneous boot and app loading times by adding a Solid State Drive (SSD).

Configuration flexibility is yours when you replace your 2009-2011 iMac's internal SuperDrive with an OWC Data Doubler with a hard drive or SSD. The custom-engineered Data Doubler bracket comes ready to mount any 2.5" SATA drive up to 12.5mm in height.

Once you've installed the entire Data Doubler drive assembly into your 2009-2011 iMac's optical drive bay, you can customize how you want your internal storage to perform. Drive customization is easy and built right into OS X as the new Data Doubler mounted drive can be setup using Apple's Disk Utility program in which you can format the drive, create a RAID array using two drives together, or partition the new drive. Once formatted you can also setup the second drive as a Time Machine backup so you can take your backup with your wherever you go.

OWC provides free installation videos that guide this DIY upgrade step-by-step for each specific Mac model. Data Doubler also comes backed by OWC's award-winning U.S.A. based technical support team which is readily available to assist you with your upgrade should you have any questions.

You don't have to give up your optical drive completely if you don't want to. You can reuse the original SuperDrive with the OWC Value Line Slim optical drive enclosure for Apple SuperDrive.
*Professional installation of Data Doubler into an iMac is highly recommended due to degree of installation difficulty

This OWC 6G SSD Model is compatible with most 2009-2011 iMac models including:
  • iMac 2009-current (All Intel Models) NOTE exceptions below
Special note for 2009 iMacs.
We highly recommend the use of a SATA 2.0 (3Gb/s) SSD such as the OWC Mercury Electra 3G for the following iMacs:
iMac models with model ID:
How to find the model ID
  • iMac10,1
  • iMac11,1
  • iMac9,1
While a 6G SSD does function, it will only do so at SATA Revision 1.0 (1.5Gb/s, 150MB/s) speeds rather that the SATA Revision 2.0 (3.0Gb/s 300MB/s) speed the computer can deliver.
The Mercury Electra 3G SSD is the OWC recommended upgrade option for the iMacs listed in the special note above.

Rating: 5/5 Yes, I upgraded a 2009 iMac. April 30, 2018 I hadn't realized how badly Apple had hobbled this model of iMac when I bought it used, but it's amazing what more memory and an SSD can do for this machine. This bracket fit perfectly and installation went exactly like the instructions had mapped out. Success.

Rating: 5/5 Couldn't be easier February 26, 2018 Not even sure why OWC included an install video for this one. Installing this with an SSD was as close to plug and play as you can get.

Rating: 4/5 Upgrade main drive first! February 5, 2017 If you want faster system speeds, upgrade the main drive! You can buy any drive like the Samsung EVO 850 and not be stuck buying their drive. I didn't see that detail so this adapter is sitting in storage until I want to shell out more money for another SSD (Mercury Electra). I rated this 4/5 since it's not compatible with all drives but that is a Apple issue. Build quality is solid and I have no doubt that I'll work properly. My optical drive was replaced under Apple Care and it never worked after that anyways; might as well put some extra storage in when I need it.

Rating: 4/5 Good Way to Go SSD January 30, 2017 I recently installed this in my 2011 iMac. It was the first time I had opened one of these up, and it was definitely nerve-wracking. Ultimately, though, everything worked just fine. The video was definitely helpful.

As far as the product itself goes, I am quite pleased. It really is a neat way to add an SSD to these computers. Works just fine with my SK Hynix.

I do have one complaint: There was a sheet of clear plastic glued to the bottom of the adapter. I'm not sure what that is useful for (maybe added support), but decided to remove it from mine for some extra ventilation.

Also, the screws for the adapter were beneath the cardboard in the box. I didn't find it until after I had bought screws from the hardware store. Make sure you look there!

Rating: 5/5 Worked perfectly November 14, 2016 Not only does it hold the drive in place, it has the custom power and SATA connectors that Apple used on it's SuperDrive. This makes it an easy replacement (after you get the screen off).

Rating: 5/5 Works like intended once I got a working one October 31, 2016 We ordered one of these for my brothers imac and used it with an SSD that may or may not have been supported by my brothers computer. We did the install which took quite a bit of time, but sadly the SSD we had didn't show up. At first we thought it was an unsupported SSD so we decided to put this into another imac we had that should have been supported by the SSD. It still didn't work. We ordered a new SSD from OWC and tried it as well, but it still didn't work. We decided that maybe the Data Doubler was bad. I called support and I believe it was Sam that helped me. He too agreed that the Data Doubler may be bad as we had tried it in 2 imacs, with 2 different SSD's and it still didn't work. Sam sent us out an new Data Doubler and we installed it. SUCCESS Either SSD worked fine but it had been a bad data doubler. While it took us a bit to troubleshoot we ultimately got a super fast booting imac with SSD in it. I was so happy with how well it worked in my brothers iMac that I purchased one for my son's imac as well and it too has a super fast booting SSD in it too. I have one other computer that can use an SSD and then my transfer away from HDD (except for data backups) will be complete.

Rating: 5/5 Fantastic Product March 31, 2016 I installed this product along with a 480GB Mercury Extreme Pro 6G 2.5-inch 7mm SATA 6.0Gb/s Solid-State Drive (the Data Doubler pack from MacSales) using the instructional video provided by MacSales. Took no longer than 15 mins and was as easy as pie.

However, on testing the new installation on my mid 2011 27" iMac, the drive speed was not that much faster (from 160 MBPS HDD to 250 MBPS SSD) which, after some research turned out to be due to the optical drive SATA port being a 3Gbps port and not a 6Gbps port. After a little more investigating I found that there is a spare 6Gbps port on the mid 2011 model which is empty.

So I reopened the machine and successfully moved the connector to the spare port on the logic board (using one of the mac sales tutorials) and its working perfectly now. By doing this, Read speeds have been bumped from 250 MBPS on the 3Gbps port to 380 MBPS and write from 250MBPS from the 3Gbps port to 500MBPS.

I would suggest that macsales put a note up on the website or add an annotation in one of your videos for others to see as this is a key piece of information for people purchasing the data doubler to replace their optical drives on 2011 27" imacs.

In summary - keeping the above mentioned info in mind, the data doubler should not take more than 30 mins to install. This was the first time I had ever opened a mac so if I can do it - so can you! Just be very careful with the logic board connectors and don't try to rush anything.

In any case - Thank you MacSales for providing such a fantastic service, quick international shipping and excellent support. Well done.

Rating: 5/5 Easy Way To Add An SSD January 10, 2016 I purchased the data doubler and it installed with ease. This was on a 2010 iMac i7 which negotiates the optical drive at 1.5 Gbs, but has the ability to run an ssd at 3.0 Gbs which is fast Sata II speeds. I have 2 SSDs in my 2011 which are running at full 6.0 Gbs with SATA IIIs and in the near future will be ordering another DiskDoubler for it. It will then run at 3.0 Gbs a second, but what the heck, that is still fast! This adapter keeps you from having to do major surgery, as in pulling the logic board. It is a simple in and out procedure and is worth every penny plus some to dump the optical drive and get a new screaming computer with SSD speed. The DataDoubler converts the optical drive cable to fit perfectly to the bracket, since it will not mate with an SSD without it. Everything fits perfectly and performs perfectly. Thank you OWC!

Rating: 4/5 Replaced my iMac Optical Drive January 3, 2016 My 2009 iMac had an optical drive that I never used. I was in the process of replacing my old 1TB SATA hard drive with a smaller capacity SSD drive and ordered this Data Doubler along with the OWC in-line Temperature Sensor that was needed to keep the fans from running on high constantly.

See, the SSD drive does not connect to the temperature sensor so you really do need to add something to let the system know it isn't too hot. The inline sensor gives you a little self adhesive treated sensor patch that you stick to the SSD case. I mention this part only because the same kind of sensor is attached to the optical drive and you'll need to figure out how to safely remove that sensor and reuse it to install a new SATA drive where the optical drive was.

The Data Doubler makes replacing it easy enough that you don't need detailed instructions to figure it out which is good because I could only use the MacMini instructions for the Data Doubler.. The Temperature Sensor is the only part where it wasn't very clear what to do. Since I had learned the hard way that you do need a sensor for switching to a SSD drive, I figured I'd better try to carefully (very carefully) remove the heat sensor from the optical drive and reattach it to the new SATA case.

I used a single edged razor blade to lift off the heat sensor, stick it onto the new SATA drive and a small patch of electrical tape to ensure it would stay put since I was re-using the original sensor. The whole thing took maybe 40 minutes and I love the performance of the OS on the SSD and most of my files on the 1TB drive. My iMac and I are happy.

Easiest way to improve overall performance on an older iMac is adding RAM and I did that also. The supplies and instructions from OWC/MacSales made it fairly simple and affordable.

Rating: 5/5 This is a quality option. November 20, 2015 I am very happy with this product. Does what it should and is nicely made. Perhaps would have liked instructions with what do do with the optical drive temperature sensor and where it should have been placed. Had to guess and hope it was sufficient.

Rating: 5/5 Works perfect October 28, 2014 I used this to, as the product name suggests, replace the optical drive in my 2009 iMac with an extra hard drive. The suction caps worked like a charm to remove the screen and the set of tools are useful for taking apart other Apple products such as MacBook Pros and other iMacs. It took no time at all (thanks to the OWC tutorial) and has been perfect since installation.

Shipping was also prompt, especially given that it was an international order.

Rating: 5/5 Great Idea September 26, 2014 I wondered about this for awhile before ordering. I didn't really need my internal optical since I have a better external optical that I use all the time. Thus made the installation much easier for the iMac and also allowed me the continue using the old solid state drive inside the machine. I was impressed that the tech I talked with recommended it to me.
