Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  2. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. Rating: 5/5 Great SSD Drive and Kit But Do Your Homework Before Installing May 18, 2018 I purchased the Mercury Electra 6G 500GB SSD kit to replace my late 2012 iMac's failing 1TB internal SATA hard drive. The SSD itself is phenomenal performance-wise and lightning-fast compared to the stock drive. I'm extremely happy with the purchase of the SSD. The installation kit was also top-notch, especially the plastic micro-sized pizza cutter which greatly assists in cutting the adhesive strips that attach the iMac's display to the frame. The included suction cups and screwdriver were also very helpful. I ended up having to order additional adhesive strips (which are unlabeled and only come in one length as opposed to the labeled custom-length strips included with the kit). This was due to me not reviewing multiple installation instruction videos as I should have before starting the installation. The OWC video is good, but there are multiple other videos out there which should also be viewed prior to starting the project. I learned this the hard way when I re-sealed my iMac display after installing the SSD drive. I didn't test the iMac by starting it up prior to sealing the display to the frame. The OWC install video doesn't hammer that step home as much as it should (other videos are very clear on that step), and, had I tested it before sealing it up, I would have noticed that one of the display cables had come loose as I was sealing the display to the frame. I sealed it, started it up, and...no video. The end result was that I had to unseal it again, reconnect the loose cable, and leave the display taped onto the frame with painter's tape until the new adhesive strips arrived and I could seal it back up properly. This was my own fault in the end for not doing enough research and only watching the one OWC installation video before jumping into the installation. My advice: the upgrade is definitely worth it, but do your homework before attempting the installation yourself!

Rating: 5/5 OMG, a must upgrade to iMac! May 1, 2018 I was prepared to just dispose of my iMac and buy another one but really didn't have the money to buy a new one. An Apple tech told me my HD was failing and causing my problems so I found mac sales.com and ordered a new HD for my iMac. The video instructions were excellent and it took less than 30 min. I received the part on a Friday and did it over the weekend so I did have one hang up, the instructions I found didn't mention the new drive had to be partitioned. I asked a friend and he told me this is why the iMac wouldn't recognize the new drive, easy process to partition but I wish the instructions were clear this had to be done. After that, it was fine. It's amazing now, better than it ever was new. Programs load up instantly. I'm simply amazed.

Rating: 4/5 no more beach ball April 25, 2018 The hard drive itself works great. I followed the instructions from the video and it was very straight forward. Having a time machine backup made recover of all the data simple. My only gripe, which is why I knocked off one star, was that the kit was missing one adhesive strip for remounting the screen. I had to make due with no adhesive on the left side. I do not live close enough to anything to get the particular strip in a timely matter so I had to mount the screen anyway. I think it will hold. I would say it took less than an hour but the reinstall of data was much longer.

I just wish I would have thought to use the external drive enclosure to install Mac OS on the SSD before I installed the SSD on the computer.

Rating: 5/5 Exceeded all my expectations March 3, 2018 Everything worked flawlessly - the video, tools and hardware were all very impressive and made a challenging job a breeze. Couldn't be happier.

One suggestion ... I would recommend that the screen not be reapplied with the supplied 2-sided tape until all operations are verified. I attached the screen with blue painters tape for my dry run ... good thing because I had forgot to attach the video cable.

Rating: 5/5 Scary at first, but excellent kit and instructions January 2, 2018 I had been considering replacing or upgrading my iMac 4k because rebooting and app loading was taking so long, even with a stock Fusion 1T drive. I couldn't find any comparison reports between an SSD and a Fusion drive, but it seemed like an SSD should make a big difference, and it did. I watched the installation video, and felt apprehensive about tearing my fairly new iMac apart. But I've got to say that the installation kit was very well done. It includes every tool and part needed. I especially like that the adhesive strips are color coded, and have tabs on both sides to simplify pulling the adhesive covering off before and after sticking them into place. Overall it didn't take nearly as long as I expected, maybe about an hour.

Rating: 5/5 Huge Performance Gain December 15, 2017 Upgrade me 2014 iMac’s 5400 HD to SSD and the memory to 16GB. Huge performance gain in booting, application launching, photo editing. The SSD installation wouldn’t be too bad, probably no more than 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. Replacing the memory is much more involved. The installation videos were great and made the whole process doable. Highly recommend this upgrade.

Rating: 5/5 Amazing solution December 14, 2017 I was a "old" customer of MacSales...and so I went to this page to upgrade my iMac 2013. The kit is simply amazing: it has everything you need to replace your disk, all the needed tools, a superb step by step video tutorial about how-to-do that. The only thing that was missing, was a guide - as step 0 - to prepare your disk in the external case with a new installation, so that when you install it, everything works great.

Rating: 5/5 Imac Upgrade to SSD October 29, 2017 I found my IMac to be slow at loading programs from disk. Swapping in the subject SSD kit made a huge improvement, sorry no benchmarks but subjectively. Swapping the system drive was more an arts and crafts project than the usual computer repair. The you tube video was an important part of the process. Extra hands and fingers are also useful. I found my wife's assistance invaluable in placing the adhesive strips to resecure the screen and in holding parts in place. This change made the computer behave much more like I had expected when purchased.

Rating: 5/5 iMac like a rocket now February 1, 2017 I wanted to take the time to come and write a review of my recent purchase and self installation of a SSD drive in my 21.5" late 2013 iMac. From the product selection process on OWC's website helping me locate my exact SSD to the shipping video replacement guide and former HD (1TB) content migration, all went fantastic. My wife was always complaining about the spinning beachball she would endure. This has been completely eliminated. The machine has become a pleasure to work on now. If you value your time, I highly recommend an upgrade from ordinary HD's to SSD. Thank you Other World Computing!
