Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 iMac hard drive replacement kit June 24, 2020 I spent time with apple customer service and the opinion was the hard drive needed replacing. They also said official apple repair was expensive especially for our computer (late 2013 iMac) Two local shops told me they'd replace it, but there was a good chance the screen would break. I decided to try it myself. I've been around computers for a long time, but not really a hardware guy. I bought the installation kit and followed the videos and it went well. One surprise was the hard drive cable was hard to get to plug in (one piece not two like the video), I loosened the speaker housing for a bit more room and managed to plug it in. The formatting instruction PDF should have a simple version not getting into the new/old formats. I decided to use the older HFS. I didn't glue it back together until I'd formatted and install ios. Lots quicker now!

Rating: 5/5 Late 2015 iMac Upgrade June 11, 2020 I'm ecstatic! We bought a secondhand iMac that has just been so slow, we really felt like we got hosed. Bought this upgrade, installed it myself with the included kit and we've got a great computer now! Before you toss your iMac - do this upgrade, you will not end up spending the money on a new one like I almost did - thank you for such a wonderful product!

Rating: 5/5 Quick and easy May 17, 2020 After many months I have decided I want one of my old iMacs to be working again and purchased the upgrade kit with a SSD drive and all the tools. It looked so easy in the video informations and it was. I am not a computer repairer but could make this work perfect and my 2012 iMac is very quick and better than I expected. Now I am even thinking of doing it with my other iMac , perfect kit and perfect product and video info, Thanks OWC. Tony, New Zealand.

Rating: 5/5 A steal at twice the price May 16, 2020 I should've done this from the beginning with my Mom's late 2015 iMac. The speeds with the SSD are closer to my MacBook Pro than with the old HDD, and that's quick. The price for the performance is a steal, and plus, you get an enclosure and cable for whatever HDD was in your mac before.

The only thing I would change are about the install video. For me, it's better to reposition the suction cups before putting the screen back on. I put one just below the camera hole (so I could make sure the camera had proper fitment) and one at the bottom center of the screen. This is because if you sit the screen perpendicular to the iMac on the adhesive and then lower it like in the video, there will be a sizable gap between the chassis and the screen. You want to reposition the suctions cups so that you can easily place the screen near parallel to the chassis starting with the bottom corners, and then lowering the whole thing. This ensured no gap between chassis and screen, and perfect camera fitment. Otherwise, the video was great.

Rating: 5/5 Should have done this months ago!! April 12, 2020 6 months ago I got my newest iMac at a charity auction, thinking it would be an upgrade from my 2009 iMac (which is still blazing due to an upgrade to this same Mercury Electra SSD and memory upgrade, but sadly the OS can no longer be upgraded.) I quickly became frustrated because the 2015 iMac was SO SLOW. Seriously, folks, I thought I would have to get out and push. I've been a Mac user since my first Mac in 1991, but this piece of garbage made me wonder what is going on these days. ANYWAY, I hemmed and hawed about whether to invest more $ in doing an upgrade. After a week of COVID-19 "stay at home" I got so frustrated that I decided to pull the trigger. PLEASE DON'T BE A STUBBORN FOOL AND WAIT AS LONG AS I DID...BUY THIS PRODUCT AND DO THE UPGRADE...YOU'LL BE THRILLED YOU DID. The video guidance is amazing (I'm too stubborn to ever call anyone for help, and glad I didn't have to.) You can do this. Be sure to do a backup before diving in, and I recommend what another customer suggested: hooking things back up and making sure all is a go before applying the new adhesive to the display.

Rating: 5/5 Outstanding performance March 16, 2020 The late 2015 iMac had steadily declined in performance and had become nearly unusable. I bought a diagnostic program that suggested a failing hard drive. When I looked at other users of this SSD, their symptoms often sounded just like mine. My first install went well but resulted in regular freezes after 20 minutes or so despite two full restores from Time Machine. OWC suggested a swap, which I did, and included a new set of screen adhesive strips for the change-out. The second unit suffered one freeze, but not until after about four hours. At that point I did a new restore and upgraded to the latest OS X version. So the problem could've been in my OS. In any case, this computer is better than new. Seriously, it is faster than ever. The diagnostic program (EntreCheck) went from a "Poor" grade to "Excellent," its top ranking. Pretty good warranty, too.

Rating: 5/5 I don't know why I didn't do this sooner January 11, 2020 I had long suspected the 1TB drive in my late-2013 iMac was beginning to fail and/or develop other issues given the performance was becoming downright awful. Legit, it was taking 8-10 minutes to fully boot. Launching apps was downright painful.

Having seen several ads for the OWC SSD kits in the past, I poked through the products online and determined which kit would be a good ft for my iMac. Chatting with support to confirm was a breeze and the folks I talked to were unbelievably helpful. I watched the videos (go watch them now, if you haven't) so I knew what I would be up against; I've done plenty of PC upgrades before but never any Macs. So this was somewhat of a first for me.

The kit came within a couple of days and sadly due to time constraints, I did not get around to installing it for about a month. This morning, I finally had the time to do it. I took my time and knocked it out in about an hour. Unquestionably, the most difficult part was getting all of the adhesive strips off -- the videos made it look like they would just peel off easily but I had to do a fair amount of light scraping with the cutter tool (and some goo gone) to get it all off. Prior to applying the replacement strips, I did reattach the screen and two display cables to test. It worked! Once I knew I was good to go, I proceeded with applying the new strips a buttoning the iMac up.

Holy smokes.

The performance difference is downright staggering. It boots in maybe 10 seconds now. Applications simply appear.. it feels almost as snappy as my iPad Pro.

Hard to believe this is a 7 year old machine. It feels like it is brand new.

Can't say enough good things about the kit -- literally everything you need is included. If you are considering it, just pull the trigger. You will be truly shocked at the performance.

Rating: 5/5 They include EVERYTHING... October 29, 2019 I feel like I've been a OWC customer since there has been OWC. That said I haven't ordered in a long time but was thrilled to find service hadn't changed.

I placed my order and then realized I hadn't updated my old out of state address. No worried, support via chat got me sorted.

My ordered arrived and I casually flipped through the contents, waiting for the weekend to undertake the upgrade. I spent over an hour making a bootable USB drive for once the new drive was installed. Little did I realize they included a HD enclosure and USB cable so I could boot from there and install new OS.

All the tools where included, a screen cleaning cloth the works. The adhesive strips aligned perfect.

Could not be happier. Brought much needed life to my machine.

Rating: 5/5 2013 iMac 1GB Mercury Electra 6G SSD Install May 28, 2019 It may of taken me 4 hours to do the install of Mercury Electra 6G SSD on a 2013, 21.5" A1418 iMac with a Fusion drive - but what a difference in performance. *** Adobe Lightroom 6 used to take about a minute to fully load. Now it's less than 10 seconds. Operating time for processing files, such as exporting large TIFF to Photoshop are nearly as fast. *** The provided suction cups and little cutting wheel tool are nice to have. With that said, I was glad to have on hand the iFixIt tool kit, left over from previous SSD install for Mac Mini. It provided multiple guitar picks that were useful when removing the display and a pointed tool that came in handy to secure the adhesive strips. *** Bottom line: I highly recommend this upgrade!

Rating: 5/5 Easy to Do November 10, 2018 I can't say enough how happy I am with this company. This kit made it extremely easy to upgrade the hard drive in this iMac.

This was an older iMac that I stopped using when I got a 27". I gave this to my kids. But the built in mechanical hard drive was terrible and my kids couldn't use this very well d/t how slow everything responded.

After doing this upgrade myself, this iMac flies Late 2012 iMac 21.5" 2.7GHz i5 8GB Memory NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M 512MB

This was extremely easy to install. I could have probably done it in 20 minutes but removing the original tape from the iMac took me about 25 itself. The video from the OWC website guided me along accurately.

Highly recommended!

Rating: 5/5 Easy installation and incredibly performance boost September 30, 2018 A local shop wanted $700 to swap the HDD for a new SSD. I am very glad to have found OWC and their kit and instructions to do the job myself. Overall the job took about an hour, the kit had everything I needed to do the job correctly, and the result is great. My 2013 iMac was becoming unusably slow - Spotify took 10 minutes to fully open and launching Word almost always crashed the computer. After swapping to the new SSD, the performance for my work flow is more or less equal to my 2018 MacBook Pro. The kit was a huge money saver and should make my iMac a sold computer for several more years.

Rating: 5/5 Great SSD Drive and Kit But Do Your Homework Before Installing May 18, 2018 I purchased the Mercury Electra 6G 500GB SSD kit to replace my late 2012 iMac's failing 1TB internal SATA hard drive. The SSD itself is phenomenal performance-wise and lightning-fast compared to the stock drive. I'm extremely happy with the purchase of the SSD. The installation kit was also top-notch, especially the plastic micro-sized pizza cutter which greatly assists in cutting the adhesive strips that attach the iMac's display to the frame. The included suction cups and screwdriver were also very helpful. I ended up having to order additional adhesive strips (which are unlabeled and only come in one length as opposed to the labeled custom-length strips included with the kit). This was due to me not reviewing multiple installation instruction videos as I should have before starting the installation. The OWC video is good, but there are multiple other videos out there which should also be viewed prior to starting the project. I learned this the hard way when I re-sealed my iMac display after installing the SSD drive. I didn't test the iMac by starting it up prior to sealing the display to the frame. The OWC install video doesn't hammer that step home as much as it should (other videos are very clear on that step), and, had I tested it before sealing it up, I would have noticed that one of the display cables had come loose as I was sealing the display to the frame. I sealed it, started it up, and...no video. The end result was that I had to unseal it again, reconnect the loose cable, and leave the display taped onto the frame with painter's tape until the new adhesive strips arrived and I could seal it back up properly. This was my own fault in the end for not doing enough research and only watching the one OWC installation video before jumping into the installation. My advice: the upgrade is definitely worth it, but do your homework before attempting the installation yourself!

Rating: 5/5 OMG, a must upgrade to iMac! May 1, 2018 I was prepared to just dispose of my iMac and buy another one but really didn't have the money to buy a new one. An Apple tech told me my HD was failing and causing my problems so I found mac sales.com and ordered a new HD for my iMac. The video instructions were excellent and it took less than 30 min. I received the part on a Friday and did it over the weekend so I did have one hang up, the instructions I found didn't mention the new drive had to be partitioned. I asked a friend and he told me this is why the iMac wouldn't recognize the new drive, easy process to partition but I wish the instructions were clear this had to be done. After that, it was fine. It's amazing now, better than it ever was new. Programs load up instantly. I'm simply amazed.

Rating: 4/5 no more beach ball April 25, 2018 The hard drive itself works great. I followed the instructions from the video and it was very straight forward. Having a time machine backup made recover of all the data simple. My only gripe, which is why I knocked off one star, was that the kit was missing one adhesive strip for remounting the screen. I had to make due with no adhesive on the left side. I do not live close enough to anything to get the particular strip in a timely matter so I had to mount the screen anyway. I think it will hold. I would say it took less than an hour but the reinstall of data was much longer.

Rating: 5/5 So great, I just had to come back and leave a review! April 3, 2018 I couldn't be happier with this product. The kit had everything I needed, the instruction video was very clear, and my computer is speedier than ever. Thank you so much, MacSales! This is a game changer.
