The complete solution for your 2011 iMac

Configuration flexibility is yours when you add a second internal drive using the OWC SSD Bay Add-In Kit. Boost your storage capacity by adding additional storage, and enjoy near-instantaneous boot and app loading times thanks the performance of an OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD.

Starts fast, stays fast

Even though many SSDs use low cost, less robust components in their design, they can still offer enticing short term bust speeds which are perfectly suitable for light duty uses. However, those drives are not designed to deliver consistent sustained speeds over their capacity rating, which results in a dramatic slowdown to even hard drive speeds under demanding use.
The fifth generation of Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD was built to start fast and stay fast at over 450MB/s sustained. Its development began with using the best flash storage components and technology available. Next, after being nearly completely filled to capacity with data, it had to deliver the same high speed as if it were empty. This drive doesn't flinch at any time or capacity level and drop read/write speeds like other drives do…it easily handles the most extreme, mission-critical uses you can throw at it.

    just like new!

I have been working with a slow imac for years, just barely tolerating it. Now it is so snappy. Boots up in a flash. Most of my old apps no longer work now. I will slowly have to recreate my old desktop experience by updating or repurchasing. The accompanying how to video did the trick. I put my ram modules in the wrong slots at first. oops. got the chimes of doom. It was easily remedied. I tried unsuccessfully several times to get a new OS on the new drive using internet back up techniques. It eventually worked when I booted up from the back up boot drive hidden in the old hard drive

    Response from OWC, Support

Glad to hear you got your iMac working like new again, if you ever need any other upgrades please let us know!

    Ooooh, Baby…

Wow! My Mid-2011 iMac 27" is like a different computer now. More accurately, it is like a NEW computer now. In general, this ten-year-old computer had become a wallowing pig in High Sierra. Now it runs like I just unboxed it. NOTE: This kit *adds* an SSD while leaving the HDD installed. The other OWC kit replaces the HDD with an SSD. This other kit uses a drive caddy to mount the SSD where the HDD lives, and (most importantly) includes a temperature sensor. (If you do not tell the logic board the temp of the drive installed in that bay the fans will run at 100% all the time. The kit I am reviewing requires you to more or less remove the logic board, as the SATA cable must be plugged into the backside of the board, and then the cable must be routed behind everything and fit in the opening the main cables run through. It is less ideal than the HDD replacement kit, but if you want to have two internal discs this is the best way. In the kit I am reviewing, the SSD has to fit into a small void that was not designed for this, and is held in place via sticky pads that work very well. The other kit (HDD Replace) is much easier to install. However, after all the work, having this dual-drive setup in my iMac is pretty trick. I like it and am glad I did the work. And again, this thing flies now. Amazing! Highly recommended!
