Experience the extreme performance of an OWC SSD upgrade with this easy DIY SSD and hard drive replacement kit. Add an SSD to your hard drive equipped iMac to experience faster booting, near instant application launches and data transfer speeds up over 500 MB/s.
Fast and reliable solid-state storage
With sustained data speeds of over 450 MB/s, up to 100X greater data protection than enterprise class Hard Disk Drives, and RAISE technology for RAID like data protection and reliability, the OWC Mercury 6G SSD line delivers unbeatable performance, that's backed by an incredible OWC SSD Limited Warranty.
Upgrade Your iMac with Confidence.
OWC's in-line solution is the only hardware digital thermal sensor on the market allowing a third-party SATA drive to be installed in your iMac. A convenient, plug-and-play cable, the In-line Digital Thermal Sensor eliminates fan noise and maintains proper system fan control through the iMac's System Management Controller. This innovative device is designed specifically for the iMac, requires no software hacks and ensures compatibility with Apple's built-in diagnostic processes.
Maintains highest performance while offering ultimate convenience
The NewerTech AdaptaDrive has been benchmark test proven to deliver the same data transfer rates as is experienced when a drive is connected directly to the SATA data bus. The AdaptaDrive doesn't create a bottleneck or any performance throttling...it delivers pure data pass-through performance and drive use convenience from any 2.5" SATA 1.5Gb/s, 3Gb/s, or 6Gb/s hard drive or SSD.

Please note, that before attempting to perform this installation, it is recommended you watch the associated instructional video in its entirety to determine your ability to perform this complex procedure. OWC assumes no responsibility for damage that may occur during the install.

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 Good product and great service February 20, 2018 We have installed 2 of theses repair kits in iMacs in one of our science labs. The repair has gone smoothly and works perfectly. Compared to our local Apple repair we can do this ourselves on a 2 for 1 cost basis and save transportation time and expense as the repair shop is out of town. The added bonus is a quick turnaround on our order. Parts arrived in two days and repair made same day as arrival.

Rating: 5/5 This DIY Kit is an awesome upgrade!!! February 19, 2018 The youtube video and the technical support I received from these guys is second to no one. The video was incredibly detailed and the parts/kit was "total cost involved". Did not need any EXTRA parts to complete this task and my computer runs better then it ever has!! Would definitely recommend this to anyone. I am a (my background) fireman and mechanical contractor - fix air conditioners for a living. I have little to no computer experience, but I can read and follow instructions well. Had absolutely no problems doing this on my own.

Rating: 5/5 Easy Install and Works Great January 30, 2018 I bought this to replace a Fusion drive in my late-2014 iMac. The instructions and videos walked me through the steps. Parts were adequate to complete entire repair. While I was able to do the disassembly by myself, I'd recommend having a helping during the reinstall of the display. It's kinda hard to hold up the monitor and plug in the two cables while not letting the display come in full contact with the new adhesive strips. Here's a tip - when you're reinstalling the display, ensure the sides are flush with the edges of the case and ensure you push the display on an angle down towards the bottom where the apple logo is. That way, you ensure a tight fit along the bottom edge of the display.

Rating: 5/5 Simple straightforward install with video January 22, 2018 I purchased this to upgrade my wife's 2015 iMac 27" with it not having the fusion drive it was very slow to load anything. I don't know how Apple thought the original configuration was suitable for the system. I ordered the 1TB SSD from MAcSales and watched all the video's they had along with everything else I could find on the internet. If you follow the steps and don't get in a hurry the upgrade is very easy and straightforward. They call it an expert level procedure but I think it is more in the mid-range of difficulty. The only reason being is the display is fragile and could be damaged if you tried to gorilla the removal. All the tools needed were included and went without issue. I created an install disk on a USB drive and then restored the backup from Time Machine. The install of the drive took around an hour and the restore took around 6 hours. All in all a very pleasant experience and the new drive runs 100x faster. Thanks guys for a great product.

Rating: 5/5 Excellent Upgrade January 15, 2018 This SSD drive put a lot of zip into my older iMac (Late 2012). Waking from sleep and opening Lightroom used to take at least a minute, whereas with the new drive I'm up and running within 5 seconds.

Rating: 5/5 As advertised January 9, 2018 The installation was pretty easy. I only had a hard time with two screws that would not easily come loose with the help of the included torx screwdrivers as their handle are pretty slim. I had to use both hands. Apart from this and some difficulty to disconnect the tiny connector from the loudspeaker, everything else went smoothly. Now my computer is more responsive when I click on applications and the computer boots more rapidly. I have to thank the technical staff for their instructions to recreate the Fusion Drive with the 120GB card on the mother board. Thank you.

Rating: 5/5 Massive speedup December 17, 2017 Very happy with the upgrade kit and the end result. The YouTube video explaining the installation was easy to follow and the kit arrived with everything I needed. I set the SSD up first by plugging it in externally using a USB 3.0 universal drive adapter (also bought here) and cloning the drive. I then booted OSX from it to make sure everything was working fine before I installed internally. Process was fine - the only tricky bit was sticking the screen back on, which you have to do carefully otherwise it won’t be perfectly aligned. The performance of the Mac with the SSD in it is transformed - maybe 5 to 10 times faster overall. Couldn’t be happier - it’s like have a new computer.

Rating: 4/5 Very good intentions and an excellent product October 10, 2017 The SSD 250 GB upgrade kit for IMac 27" is a great product. Watching the "how to do it" video on the OWS website made it so easy to perform the operation. I watched the video several times to memorize the whole process. Unfortunately there were missing a no 11 adhesive tape strip. Instead there were two number 12 strips. A detail I did not check before opening my IMac. Always check whats in the box - before going ahead. With a little cutting the one no 12 became a valuable no 11 tape strip. I now have a super fast IMac 27" late 2013 with an additional 32 GB OWC RAM up-grade.

Response from MacSales.com, TEA October 10, 2017 I'm very sorry to hear that you got two of the number 12 strips and no number 11. Definitely not a normal issue with those kits, so I apologize for that. I'm glad to hear everything is working though!

Rating: 5/5 Simple Upgrade > Huge Performance Gain October 8, 2017 This is a great kit for the thin-edge iMac. Super simple to cut open and reseal, leaving it look as though untouched by factory. Can't stress how much of an improvement the SSD makes over even a 7200 RPM drive. I'm a sw engineer and my test suite was taking ~8 min to execute on the 7200 RPM drive. It takes 55 sec with the SSD! Buy yourself a USB dock for the old spinner and use it as a backup drive and makes it easy to transfer data post-install! Well worth the money. Take the plunge and do it, you won't be sorry!

PS..The temp sensor PCB means I don't need to install something like SSD Fan Control to keep the case fan from running at 5000 RPM.

Rating: 5/5 Awesome Products! June 13, 2017 I bought two of these kits one for my Late 2015 27" iMac and one for my girlfriend's late 2013 iMac 27". We had them installed at Microcenter and just under the wire as they just got word from Apple that they are not allowed to install anymore SSDs for iMacs unless customer buys them from Apple.

These drive are lightning fast and make our 27" iMacs even more awesome and powerful!

Rating: 5/5 Works as expected February 17, 2017 Significant performance improvement over the standard Fusion Drive that came with the 2014 Retina iMac. Installation was not as complicated as I thought it would be after watching a few videos of the process. It took about an hour to complete.

If you have the tools, the DIY bundle from MacSales, and are not too intimidated, its worth it.

While not an upgrade for beginners, the process went smoothly and without any problems. The "new" iMac is now significantly faster in booting, image activation, and I/O in general.
