Experience the extreme performance of an OWC SSD upgrade with this easy DIY SSD and hard drive replacement kit. Add an SSD to your hard drive equipped iMac to experience faster booting, near instant application launches and data transfer speeds up over 500 MB/s.
Fast and reliable solid-state storage
With sustained data speeds of over 500 MB/s, up to 100X greater data protection than enterprise class Hard Disk Drives, and RAISE technology for RAID like data protection and reliability, the OWC Mercury 6G SSD line delivers unbeatable performance, that's backed by an incredible OWC SSD Limited Warranty.
Upgrade Your iMac with Confidence.
OWC's in-line solution is the only hardware digital thermal sensor on the market allowing a third-party SATA drive to be installed in your iMac. A convenient, plug-and-play cable, the In-line Digital Thermal Sensor eliminates fan noise and maintains proper system fan control through the iMac's System Management Controller. This innovative device is designed specifically for the iMac, requires no software hacks and ensures compatibility with Apple's built-in diagnostic processes.
Maintains highest performance while offering ultimate convenience
The NewerTech AdaptaDrive has been benchmark test proven to deliver the same data transfer rates as is experienced when a drive is connected directly to the SATA data bus. The AdaptaDrive doesn't create a bottleneck or any performance throttling...it delivers pure data pass-through performance and drive use convenience from any 2.5" SATA 1.5Gb/s, 3Gb/s, or 6Gb/s hard drive or SSD.

Please note, that before attempting to perform this installation, it is recommended you watch the associated instructional video in its entirety to determine your ability to perform this complex procedure. OWC assumes no responsibility for damage that may occur during the install.

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD - 1 TB October 29, 2018 I have a late 2012 iMac 27" with a 1 TB fusion drive. When I tried to install Mojave, the install failed due to SMART error: Failing. While the iMac is a bit old, it serves my needs just fine and I didn't relish the idea of replacing it. I immediately did a CCC backup in addition to the always running TimeMachine B/Us.

Spoke to pre-sales at OWC and they recommended the Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD kit. I had once before seen a service tech open the iMac and felt I was up for the task. It's not for the faint of heart. After viewing the OWC instruction video, I had at it. The kit contained everything necessary to complete the install which went flawlessly. Two things I'd point out, the SSD portion of a fusion drive is on the motherboard, not the drive so it stays there after the HD drive is gone. As it turned out, the SSD is what was giving the SMART error, not the SATA HD. Oh well, no way of knowing until you break the set. Still quite satisfied as I now have a fully functioning SSD drive and was able to complete the Mohave upgrade. The Fusion SSD still shows up (as Failing). Maybe it will, maybe it won't. It's there and I use it for junk files. Only regret was that I didn't get the 2TB SSD. After all is said and done, probably bought a few more years of life to an otherwise fine iMac.

Rating: 5/5 Happy customer October 22, 2018 I was a little anxious about this upgrade but I did my homework and things went smoothly. The trickiest part was disconnecting the first cable attaching the screen, it was fiddly and hard to see clearly balancing the screen while trying to disconnect things. But taking your time is the secret. The computer is so much faster now, well worth the money.

Rating: 5/5 Easy install September 23, 2018 Ok, the install wasn't exactly easy but it wasn't difficult for anybody with a bit of mechanical skills. Take your time AND watch the install video before you dive in and you should not have any problems. Performance of the SSD over the original HDD is nothing short of fantastic! Very pleased with the kit. Quality throughout.

Rating: 5/5 New life to my imac! August 7, 2018 After only one year, my 256Go ssd blade failed in my imac 5k 2017... I decided to go with a bigger drive and after a careful installation, it worked perfectly! Please note that if you go from an ssd (blade) to this model, you have to buy an additional apple Sata Cable! (not include in this kit)

Rating: 5/5 Excellent product even better install advice August 1, 2018 I upgraded my iMac 27" from a one TB Fusion to this 2 TB SSD. It's so much faster now. Besides the drive being excellent the OWC install video guide was just super. Opening many Apple products isn't for the faint of heart. However, OWC make it not only look easy but it makes it easy! I didn't need any help from tech support. The install, about an hour, went without any issues. Everything I needed was provided in the kit.

Rating: 5/5 Not As Scary A Fix As You Might Think July 29, 2018 I was worried this would be a daunting fix for my late 2013 iMac with the fusion drive but I was wrong. This kit contains with all you need to replace your hard drive. The replacement drive fit with no issues. The kit came with the tools needed to separate the screen from the chassis along with the new sealant tape for putting it all back together again. i feel like my iMac has a new lease on life now. After many repeated viewings of the install videos, I was able to replace the drive in a little over an hour.

Rating: 5/5 WOW, the speed difference July 21, 2018 I was considering getting a new iMac because my 2012 factory iMac had just become almost unbearably slow. I had been eyeballing this upgrade for some time, but prices were always just out of justifiable reach... until recently. Pulled the trigger on this upgrade and I am VERY happy with it. I went from a several-minute+ boot to just 15 seconds. It feels like I have a new computer again, without the price tag. The parts supplied and the video instructions were extremely valuable in making me feel confident in the procedure. I'd be lying if I wasn't a little scared to break the adhesive seal on the screen, but I took my time and was careful, and had no problems. I also chose to do a fresh install on OS X after the drive upgrade. It felt good to have a completely fresh start on my machine. So worth it. Highly recommended drive upgrade!

Rating: 5/5 Like a new iMac July 8, 2018 My 2012 iMac bit the dust. I decided it was the hard drive and worth a replacement. In spite of all the warnings online I did it myself with expert tools and documentation from owc. Piece of cake, but I’ve been a techie all my life so ymmv. I especially liked the little pizza cutter, lol.

Rating: 5/5 Much Easier Than Expected! July 5, 2018 The install videos were awesome. I did have a tiny snag when the computer didn’t seem to recognize the new drive. Then I remembered that I needed to use Disk Utility to partition the drive. After that it was simple to get up and running.

Rating: 5/5 SSD upgrade worth the install effort. May 28, 2018 The installation is complicated but it's worth the time and effort. The screen pry tool that came with the upgrade kit was not the spinning wheel tool you see in the installation video. The shipped tool broke at the tip and I had to use my old iPhone upgrade screen pry tool which was a much better tool then the one supplied. My advice, take your time, have the install video running on your phone or iPad. Make sure the screen suction cups are firmly holding the screen. Mine came off the screen a couple of times. This could result in BREAKING the display screen. I ended up handling the screen with my hands. Removing and then replacing the screen is the riskiest part of the installation. But when it's done BOOM the SSD really screams. One other note, if you format the SSD as an APFS drive you should understand how that new format works in regards to "garbage collection" or trash management. Lastly if you're replacing a fusion drive you must "break" it before you install the new SSD.

Rating: 4/5 Great cost effective way to upgrade iMac April 29, 2018 Great way to save ~$700 vs purchasing with this option. The only issue was that the adhesive strips that come with the kit cover up the microphone on the mid 2017 27" imac, resulting in a muffled and unusable microphone. The microphone is now located at the bottom, about 3 inches to the right of center (look for 3 small holes and a small vertical ribbon cable). After OWC sent out another set of adhesive strips, the second time around I cut out this section and now the microphone is as good as new.

Rating: 5/5 You can do it! November 21, 2017 I had second thoughts about attempting this HD replacement but ordered this kit anyway. Everything you need to accomplish this task is included. The install video is very comprehensive and along with other videos reviewed on YouTube made the difference. Even installing the adhesive strips to secure the screen went smoothly.

I would recommend temporarily reattaching the display without adhesive to test this installation before installing the strips.

The install video states the time to complete at 1 hour. As an occasional up-grader I worked slowly and it took about 3 hours.

I had to command-r on boot to get to the restore menu. I installed using a time machine backup.

Highly recommended. It is hard to put in words the difference between this SSD and an the old drive. Everything is instant now! Great kit!
