Upgrade Your iMac with Confidence.
OWC's in-line solution is the only hardware digital thermal sensor on the market allowing a third-party SATA drive to be installed in your iMac. A convenient, plug-and-play cable, the In-line Digital Thermal Sensor eliminates fan noise and maintains proper system fan control through the iMac's System Management Controller. This innovative device is designed specifically for the iMac, requires no software hacks and ensures compatibility with Apple's built-in diagnostic processes.
Maintains highest performance while offering ultimate convenience
The NewerTech AdaptaDrive has been benchmark test proven to deliver the same data transfer rates as is experienced when a drive is connected directly to the SATA data bus. The AdaptaDrive doesn't create a bottleneck or any performance throttling...it delivers pure data pass-through performance and drive use convenience from any 2.5" SATA 1.5Gb/s, 3Gb/s, or 3Gb/s hard drive or SSD.

Please note, that before attempting to perform this installation, it is recommended you watch the associated instructional video in its entirety to determine your ability to perform this complex procedure. OWC assumes no responsibility for damage that may occur during the install.

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

Rating: 5/5 Surprisingly simple June 26, 2018 Notwithstanding that I used to work for an Apple service depot years ago, I wanted to upgrade my iMac wit a SSD drive. A person with a reasonable level of patience and dexterity can do this following the video instructions and have it up and ready for data transfer in a couple of hours, tops. Beats the heck out of the old "Take Apart" processes...

Rating: 5/5 Gave new life to our iMac June 13, 2018 My wife's iMac is a 2010 model, and after years of great service, we thought it was going to be retired. That slowness that creeps in over the years was just getting to be too much. I knew SSD performance could be a game changer, but I really underestimated it's impact on what is now an 8 year old computer. I've built plenty of PCs in the past, so I wasn't afraid of digging into the iMac, and I'm so glad I did. This upgrade has extended the life of our iMac for years go come.

Rating: 5/5 My 27" 2009 iMac 11,1 is Reborn!!! May 15, 2018 My hard drive went belly up last week and I was considering either buying a new iMac or taking this one to an authorized Apple technician to replace the drive with a 1TB SSD. After doing some research I found the OWC MacSales DIY Kit and, after watching the video, decided I should try to do the installation myself. The order arrived within two days!

With the cats locked in another room, I prepared my work area: Tool Kit, SSD already inserted into the adapter, microfiber cloth, compressed air, latex gloves (to avoid touching the LCD screen as others recommended), iPad streaming the DIY video, and a glass of cabernet to sip along each step of the way for courage!

Thanks to the excellent video, the entire process was straightforward and went well. It was a bit tricky reconnecting some of the cables while holding the the LCD panel at an angle, but patience and determination helped. For me the most frustrating part was getting the 8 Torx T10 screws back in with those mighty magnets sucking them every which way!

To my relief, after upgrading the RAM to 16GB (why not to a complete upgrade while I was at it?) and rebooting, everything went well! Disk Utility recognized the new SSD, formatted it and I was ready to restore from my Time Machine backup. The restoration took about 10 hours and I was back in business! Startup is faster than I could have imagined and it runs cool and quiet.

Now I expect to get a couple more years of use out of my "new" zippier iMac so I can keep using the Adobe CS6 Suite and put off having to subscribe for a while. Perhaps someday I will treat myself to an iMac Pro when the price comes down a bit, but for now I have my trusty old 2009 back and better than ever!

Thank you for saving my Mac - and my wallet! ;-)

Rating: 5/5 SpEEEdy Install, SpEEEdy in use! April 29, 2018 At first I was a tad hesitant to rip my iMac apart to replace the failing hard drive. The HD was working but I could not upgrade the OS because of a S.M.A.R.T. error, so I ordered the SSD and upgrade kit. The video was a HUGE help - probably could not have done the replacement w/o it. The only issue I had was that the cables in the iMac are not particularly long and the LCD would not tilt forward very far. With my big hands and fat fingers, it was a little difficult to remove the connectors and get 'em back in place. But with some patience, it all went together as OWC said it would. I used Time Machine to restore my OS, and then did the upgrade to High Sierra. Piece of cake! And the old 2010 iMac is now a speedy machine - thanks OWC!!!!!

Rating: 5/5 I Wish Every Company In America Was This Good! April 7, 2018 Macsales.com has raised the bar for customer service, tech-support, and overall purchase experience. The new hard drive not only made my old Mac like new, but makes it run better than it did on the day that it was purchased almost ten years ago. The service, hard drive performance, and clear installation instructions went far beyond expectations.

I am not a computer repair person, nor an electronic engineer. The video, and excellent tech-support made the hard drive replacement painless. Tech support is competent, confident, patient, upbeat, and absolutely gave me confidence for success.

The only thing that I would recommend for a potential buyer is to create a bootable installer on a flash drive before you get started. You can find the instructions to do that at: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

If you run into questions…just call tech-support. The customer service at Macsales.com is unmatched. Do not hesitate if you are thinking of breathing life back into your old Mac. I ended up saving at least a thousand dollars by not buying a new unit.

Thank you macsales.com!!!

Rating: 5/5 Good option to update your equipment, it becomes really fast as a new iMac and the process is not so complex, good support from the kit and videos... March 25, 2018 I have an iMac 27"Mid 2010 with 12GB RAM. On its time it was with exceptional performance for the software used to design 3D animations and 2D vectorial designs for a small studio I started in video games. With the time and OS updates, the equipment began to slow down its performance. With the new OSX Sierra, the hard disk was all the time working, and even music from Itunes was not possible to hear in last months because of the cache in HD. At this moment, I use this computer at home for my photo edition where I store all my multimedia records. It is ok for that activity; the only challenge was it was taking so much time to load applications and I was risking to have a failure in the HD (8 years old). Looking to upgrade, I decided for the cost to replace the full HD for a solid state and bring some other three years life to my iMac. I was aware that maybe doing all by myself could damage the computer, but I learned in life that with no risk there is no win. Kit arrived on time with all necessary parts were included. I used a big table to set up the computer for the change caring to have adequate space to put at one side the screen crystal and LCD covering them with towels to avoid some dust once exposed. Also, reading another post, I used some latex globes for my hands to avoid touching the crystal or LCD screen and leave some grease or fingerprints. It gave me more confidence to interact with the equipment. Taking out the screen was easy. I used my laptop to follow the video step by step. Easy to follow all steps and detach screws and cables. I also got some compressed air bottle to clean fans, but in general, I was surprised that almost all electronics were clean. Excellent job from Apple for the design of the computer assembly. Once the hard disk was disconnected, I replaced it with the new SSD 1TB unit with the adaptor and cables. Temp sensor was also attached. I proceed to put all back and to be sure to clean very well the crystal to cover the screen. It took some 45 min, and final test was to star the computer. I prepared one day before a USB image of last Sierra OSX with the utility. However, since my original keyboard was damaged, and the new one is one Logitech wireless, it was not detected to start the computer and select the USB to start. It took some time, and the system booted from the computer Firmware showing utilities. I formatted the new SSD disk unit since computer failed to install new OS, I decided to recover all from time machine. I took about 8h (all night), but finally, the sofwarecomputer was ready. Minor acknowledges to software and licenses, but all was fine. The computer now is very fast, almost like my iMac 27" Retina display from 2016. The screen is still valuable for personal editing photos, regular office, and sometimes coding websites and cloud environments. Of course, processors are not as robust as today's Core i7, and memory in graphics card is also not as today. However, the investment was valuable since for home is enough and just at 1/8 of the cost of a new iMac. Even now the computer is very silent; the only noise is the HD time machine I attached that sometimes start. It is a real pleasure to work with this computer again and just when I arrive at home, and I even prefer to use this computer instead of my 13inch MacBook pro because of the size of the screen and user experience almost similar.

Rating: 5/5 Whiplash, and loving it. March 6, 2018 My 21" iMac 10,1 was too slow for me, and getting too slow for my daughter playing The Sims 3. Wasn't sure an upgrade would be worth it, but took the plunge and the whole family is thrilled with the new life in what was the "dog" of the house. The install video was excellent, but really should contain a step by step demo about creating a bootable thumb drive, formatting the new SSD with Disk Utility and something else that I'm drawing a blank on. Should I now upgrade my old black plastic Macbook? My old G4 Graphite Tower currently standing in as a coffee table? It's good to have this level of life decisions before me. Thanks folks for the most "heroic" line of Mac support products on the Interwebs!

Rating: 5/5 Speedier Life for an 8 year-old iMac 27 March 5, 2018 I absolutely love my iMac 27 and hope to keep it alive and running long after Apple stops supporting it (I'll sidestep to a Linux distro). I installed this item along with a data doubler/1t spinning drive. It speeded up, quieted down and cooled off my iMac. I had that adventure going during which the computer starts sounding like a 747 running up it's engines for takeoff...that's cured with the new thermosensor included with this kit. New life to a fantastic piece of hardware...the videos are great as is the online support. If you have an iMac you love and want to nurture, buy this stuff.

Rating: 5/5 Works great!! February 4, 2018 It's like having a new Mac!! Very fast and snappy now.

The toolkit worked fine. One suggestion. Get a Torx screwdriver with a retaining clip to hold the screws. It's disarmingly easy to drop a screw, which could then disappear down into the bowels of you Mac. A clip to hold the screw on the screwdriver would be a welcome safety feature.

Rating: 5/5 Absolutely the best upgrade ever! February 4, 2018 Wow! This upgrade not only sped up my old 2010 iMac 27 High Sierra OS ...it made it lightning fast! I had been plodding along with 2 minute or longer boot up times, constant spinning beach balls and Safari taking forever to load. After all, the HD was 7 years old (amazing it lasted that long!), and was extremely slow. So I ordered the kit.

My thoughts were that even if the upgrade failed, I could use the SSD somewhere else on down the road. The install was not too bad. But I did make a few mistakes. Not that any of these below happened to me.... it was a friend!! I swear!!

1. REMEMBER to format the SSD BEFORE you install it! 2. REMEMBER to format the SSD BEFORE you install it! 3. When removing the V-Sync plug or ANY plug required to be un-plugged for the install. DO NOT pull it by the wires! Or you will have to buy another one.....sad but true! 4. When removing/installing the screws that hold in the LCD screen, be patient! They are hard to find if you let one slide down inside or onto the floor!! 5. Preferably have an area that is free of fricking cat hair! This will improve the quality of your viewing pleasure once you put the glass protector back on.

I would have uploaded the video I made of the process, but it was only 10 seconds long after I cut out all the scenes with me cursing myself for ineptness...

Actually, it was a simple install and I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to revive their old Mac's.

Rating: 5/5 SSD install 27” iMac January 30, 2018 What a great experience. The staff was very nice and helpful . Ordering was easy and the price was right. The drive all brackets and parts arrived on time. The only part of the product I did not like was the suction cups were all but worthless. I used some old ones I had laying around. The physical install went flawlessly thanks to a stellar “How to” video and my wife adding moral support. I had to call tech support a couple of times to do some “scary” downloading and installing and they were great. It truly was as though I was their only customer. I spoke to one tech and later another and the second one knew exactly where I was as though he were in on the earlier conversation. Incredible tech support.now my late 2009 iMac is like lightning and I recovered all of my files. Remember, kiddies, backup often!!!

Rating: 5/5 Great product, great service, winning combo January 28, 2018 The order for the mid-2010 iMac SSD upgrade kit came faster than expected. The video for removing the old hard drive and installing the new SSD was detailed, complete and accurate. The "tips" on how to get the SSD prepared and then installing the data from the HD was OK, but too complicated with all the choices. I think you are better off just installing the SSD as is, then restarting from a "clone" backup, then formatting the SSD with Disk Utility, and cloning the backup to the SSD - it worked for me). Then, to my shock, everything started up but the screen remained black. I called technical support at OWC. The "tech" was kind, knowledgable and clearly US based. He got me to reopen the computer and check the screen power cable, which just as he suggested was not in place. It was a quick fix and the "upgraded" iMac is just as quick as much newer models. Great job OWC!. Great customer service! Great result!

Rating: 5/5 Very Nice Setup! January 4, 2018 Not as tough to install as I'd figured, although I did break one locking clip when disconnecting wires. Didn't affect the electrical engagement during reinstall, however. I was on my third Seagate factory drive when I decided to go for longevity and use the Electra 3G SSD, and this kit is a very neat way to make that possible. My iMac seems very happy with it, and the speed increase is much appreciated, especially with the newer, bloated forms of MacOS out now.

Rating: 5/5 Works like it says December 27, 2017 I upgraded my late 2009 27" imac hard drive with this SSD and installation kit a few weeks ago. Apart from one of the suction cups not working (had to pull with one and use the spudger to pry the screen off), it all went well. Took about an hour, as I have never done anything like this before and went fairly slowly, using the excellent instructional video. Also took the opportunity to clean 7 years of dust from the inside while I was in there.

Restored from a Time Machine backup and then upgraded to High Sierra. That also worked as advertised - no problems. Boot time is much quicker and I don't see the spinning beach ball anymore. I previously upgraded from 4GB RAM to 12GB hoping to resolve the speed issue, but the HDD was the limiting factor. Runs like a new machine now.

Rating: 5/5 Like I bought a brand new machine December 26, 2017 I bought this SSD upgrade for my mid-2010 iMac 27 inch to replace the stock 1TB HDD. The kit and online video were perfectly done and made it easy to follow along and perform the upgrade myself. Key point, have two people; it helps when unhooking all the wires from the monitor to have one person to hold the monitor and one to unhook the 4 spots. My 2010 iMac should go another 3 years with this upgrade easily. (also make sure you max out your memory at 32GB if you haven't already)

Rating: 5/5 Worked great but watch out for bug in High Sierra December 10, 2017 Everything worked great except for the frustrating bug in High Sierra Disk Utility. If you boot a USB high sierrra image and run Disk Utility You won’t see your SSD drive listed. You have to select view all. Quit disk utility, and then enter it again before your drive shows up. I spent a lot of time disassembling and playing with the connections before I did some searches on the web to find this work around. After formatting the drive, it was an easy install but shame on Apple for introducing this bug.
