Better by Design
"Mean Time To Failure" - We all know that nothing lasts forever. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't get the most out of your investment. OWC SSD with Durawrite™ Technology, optimizes writes to the flash memory over conventional controllers increasing the overall endurance and reliability of the complete SSD. Highly intelligent block management and wear leveling also extends the overall endurance. With this technology, even MLC-based SSDs can operate for years in demanding use applications without daily write restrictions. This adds up to a MTTF that is higher than most enterprise class hard drives and SSDs on the market today.

Additionally, as there are no volatile memory elements in this storage device, the need for cache is completely negated. The drive is just that fast from the get-go!
High Performance Internal Storage
Replace your conventional hard drive with a reliable solid state drive. Unlike traditional hard disk drives, OWC solid state drives have no moving parts, resulting in a quiet, cool, and highly rugged storage solution that also offers faster system responsiveness.

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 Brought New Life to my G4 MDD April 22, 2018 I never complained about the performance of my aging PowerMac G4 MDD, but I needed a new hard drive and thought since I'd already installed SSDs in my newer Macs, I wanted to try this one. This product breathed new life into my old machine. "Speed bumping" would be putting it mildly. I wish I'd purchased three more to fill up all its drive bays it's that good! Too bad they're no longer available. If they were, I wouldn't have that feeling of regret.

Rating: 5/5 Bought two of these kits. EXCELLENT April 4, 2017 So my goal was to take a old G4 powermac (I purchased off eBay) and install decades old software that I had kept around on a dusty hard drive. I figured if this was going to be my dedicated 'mac from the past', it should have reliable, fast (relatively - for that model) storage.

So I bought two of the 120gb SSD's along with the SATA to IDE converters. The beige G4 has two IDE connectors coming off the same cable, so the first one needs to be the master drive, the second needs to be the slave.

The SATA to IDE converters have a nice little switch that allows you to choose between Master, Slave, and Auto-Detect.

At any rate ... it works perfectly! I installed OS-9 on one hard drive, and OS X 10.4.11 (the latest this G4 can handle) and everything is smooth fast (all things considered) and quiet.

Great product for bring an old dinasaur back to life, and tons of fun.

Rating: 5/5 New life for old Macs December 27, 2016 I purchased this drive to replace the old mechanical boot drive on my 17" iMac G4. I use my G4 now as the world's coolest 17" photo frame -- with around 10,000 photos on rotation through the Mac OS Screen saver. The dome base and goose-neck-lamp arm on the G4 is like a futuristic yet mid-century-modern piece of tech art! Best photo frame EVER! I also have a piece of audio recording software that makes my G4 like a "DVR" for streaming audio. It lets me time-shift some of my favorite radio shows to enjoy later, on-demand. This SSD gave my old G4 a whole new life. Boot-up time with an SSD is extremely fast now, and the responsiveness of the Mac across the board is MUCH snappier than it used to be.

Rating: 5/5 Excellent Service & Value September 19, 2016 Ordering was simple, I called with a few questions and the staff was friendly and helpful. I bought this to replace the HD on my old G4, which runs a pre-press flatbed scanner. The OWC HD made the G4 run much faster and smoother than before, and installation was easy, thanks to the available video instructions. I live in Canada, so shipping is usually expensive and a hassle. OWC offered trouble-free shipping at an excellent price. Overall, an excellent experience, and I'd definitely buy from them again.

Rating: 4/5 Very fast, easy to install, BUT: April 29, 2016 I Installed the SSD. Very easy, good working adpater (do not forget to change it into "cable select"! BUT the iMac G3 400 Mhz DV SE freezes after waking up from sleepmode. The spiningwheel appears and the system is frozen. After restart all works fine again. I hope OWC will offer me some firmware to fix the problem.

Rating: 5/5 Like Greased Lightning! November 23, 2015 Bought this SSD to upgrade an old SONY laptop from 2006 era, mainly to get away from the heat generation issue from the OEM HDD. The laptop cannot be upgraded above XP because of graphics issues, but no matter. This little beauty takes the Sony VGN-FS742/W from a cold start to Internet access in an astonishing 42 seconds -- and that's WITH all the performance-choking updates from Microsoft. It was the perfect choice for me to resurrect this otherwise moribund laptop to a new lease on life.

Rating: 4/5 Fast. Really fast. November 3, 2015 As usual for SSD, the boot time of a Mac gets much, much shorter, even in an old G3 blue & white, or a G4 AGP graphics. Before installing this SSD, startup took almost forever, now it is about half a minute or less.

The only improvement that could be added would be a mounting bracket to better fit the existing 5.25" hard disk bays.

Rating: 5/5 Good drive for a legacy computer September 27, 2015 My G4 recently had an issue with the boot drive becoming corrupted. OWC was my first stop to find something compatible with my Mac. This drive fit my budget and was easy to install. I have yet to fully implement the drive - meaning I have not put everything on it I planned to, but it has worked without a hitch and I expect it to continue to do so. I had to consult with customer support for an error on my part and they graciously helped to resolve the issue. Great service, as always, from OWC!

Rating: 5/5 One word: AWESOME!! May 23, 2015 I'm a PPC G4 Dual 1.25 user here. I've been using regular 250GB internal HDs (qty.4) but got tired of them failing (multiple times). I'm really conscious about backing up data. I normally maintain backups for my OS and a separate backup for music/personal files. This way I'm completely covered. But it's really a pain, not to mention the probability of both the main drive and backups failing at the same time!!! It has happened to me before.

After tiring of failures and the repeated process above I just said to myself "why not try the Mercury Pro by OWC?" I must admit I was skeptical about ordering the 480GB, I'm familiar with the old school internal drives and thought there was a capacity limit on drive capacity the G4 could handle???

I used carbon copy cloner to clone my drive and let me tell you the Mercury Pro 480GB is everything it claims to be!!! Awesome performance, small footprint, I was really surprised. Needless to say I immediately ordered another one. I've consolidated all my data and the extra drive will be the clone. Time will tell as far as drive failure is concerned but based on the specs I shouldn't be as concerned when compared against my old 250GB drives ;)

Rating: 5/5 Stunning SSD Transformation! March 24, 2015 I simply plugged in my new OWC 240Gb Mercury Legacy Pro SSD into my dual 1.73Ghz Power Mac G4 QuickSilver 2002 and got fantastic performance!!! I used Carbon Copy Cloner to format and create the identical new drive, and kept the old drive as a backup. The included adapter made everything a breeze.

Now the computer cold boots in 14 seconds, loads Firefox version 31.5.0 in under 1 second (actually TenFourFoxG4 which is identical to the latest Firefox Intel version), loads any major app in the CS4 Suite in about 3 seconds, Google Earth in 2 seconds, The Entire Microsoft Office 2008 Suite in 9 seconds, and Acrobat Pro 9 in under 1 second!

The included SpeedTools Utilities shows SSD Drive speeds in excess of 120Gb/sec, easily 5 times as fast as the old hard drive on random reads and writes, and more than ten times as fast on regular fragmented files.

FANTASTIC!

Great job OWC!!!

Rating: 5/5 perfectly suited for my ends, no problems installing November 28, 2014 I ordered the 60GB ssd to replace the IDE 3.5' hd in my Korg D888 mixer/recorder. Installation went smoothly - other than having to reformat the ssd to MSDOS fat 32. With that done, the ssd was regocnised by the D888 and worked right away, no questions asked. :) Since this device is for sound recording, having an absolutely quiet ssd instead of a slightly humming HD is a brilliant upgrade. Love it.

Rating: 5/5 Fast Fast Fast November 23, 2014 I have an older 1.2 GHz PC. The hard drive was starting to fail. I made an image "just in time" and put the 120 GB PATA-equipped 3.5" drive in place. I partitioned it two ways, and put the image on the first partition. My boot speed went from 4 minutes for a full boot down to 55 seconds. Just incredible. The system runs cooler using less power, and makes a lot less noise: no clackity clack of an old HDD desperately trying to read failing sectors. I was so impressed I bought a 60 GB version for yet another older computer serving in a different application. This is a great upgrade kit if you're about to lose a hard disk drive or are sick of slow system response to boots and internet browsing!

Rating: 5/5 Revived 1st Gen Apple TV May 1, 2014 I know, I know, 1st gen AppleTV. What better way to revive it by putting a SSD in it. I know, I am still limited by the IDE throughput, but it's faster than the ID hard drive that was in there before. The AppleTV isn't stock either, its got the Crystalbuntu software on it along with the Broadcom Crystal HD decoder. This SSD helps fine tune the last bit of lagginess that the underpowered 1st ten AppleTV was exhibiting.

This was the only laptop sized IDE based SSD that I was able to find. Leave it to OWC to think that someone would want one, but they did and I thank them for that.

Rating: 5/5 .. but not for a Mac Cube January 20, 2014 This seems to be an excellent substitute for a failed IDE drive in an old Mac, so I purchased one to put into a Mac Cube but, given the very tight tolerances inside that Mac it doesn't quite fit. Other Macs I've worked usually have some slack in the cables and room to deal with offset connectors, and I've no reason to doubt that, if it could be hooked up, this SSD would as good as advertised.

But with the Cube, the 10-12mm offset that the IDE adapter card introduces, pushes a little extra cable under the Airport card door right over the IDE connector, and you can't close the door over the displaced connector and the excess cable. I'm talking millimeters, but it's "no go".

Disappointing.

Rating: 5/5 Worked flawlessly in old eMac February 13, 2013 Without a doubt, this is overkill for an eMac (1.25GHz G4, 2 GB RAM). However, with IDE drives scarce, and my need to make this eMac as usable as possible for a client on a limited budget, I opted to use this SSD kit. Installation of the kit, per se, is easy, though putting any drive into an eMac is a challenge, necessitating an almost-complete teardown. Nonetheless, after an hour of work, the drive was installed, and I booted the machine to a DVD. I then imaged over an OS/App configuration (OS X 10.5.8) and tested. Worked flawlessly. Microsoft Word 2008 launches in 5 seconds, undoubtedly limited by the machine's architecture, not this drive. But for an 10-year-old machine, that's impressive.

As for the drive itself, construction quality seems superb. Fine, classy fit-n-finish. The drive is SATA, of course, but the supplied Addonics SATA to IDE adapter was easy to use and worked without issue, even allowing master-slave-CS choice. Everything fit into the supplied 2.5- to 3.5-inch bracket adapter easily, and the drive showed up in Disk Utility without a hitch.

Only complaint: No screws were provided, and although I have a wealth of screws, finding some that were long enough - but not too long - to mount the drive to the supplied bracket was a surprising pain in the neck. I wish OWC would supply screws to mount the drive to the bracket; mounting the bracket to the machine was no issue, as I used the previous drive's screws.

Rating: 5/5 Really glad I did business with OWC! August 15, 2011 I was a bit worried over replacing my G4's HD myself after I received the 40GB Mercury EXTREME Pro. Almost chickened out and sent it back unopened! One quick call to OWC Support and I got my nerve back. After using a leaf-blower (!!!) on my back deck to clear out all the dust out of the fans and grates of this 7 year old computer, installing the SSD was a snap! Result: Lower operation temp. overall, SMOOOOOTH operation and complete stability. Could not be happier!!! Considering the 1.25 Ghz single core CPU ain't exactly a speed boot, I now don't get "spinning balls" ever and no more whine of the old drive!

Highly recommended both product & service!!! George

Response from MacSales.com, Marketing October 26, 2011 While OWC does encourage keeping your computer equipment clean as part of a http://blog.macsales.com/4813-tech-tips-spring-cleaning ">regular maintenance plan, the use of a leaf blower is not a recommended substitute for a can of compressed air.
