Rating: 5/5 ThunderBolt II and RAID really cooks August 5, 2018 MyMac Mini late 2012 has a Thunderbolt 2 port, not ThunderBolt 3. I needed lots of storage so that was actually not a problem because I could not afford enough SSD to take advantage of TBolt3. A RAID 0 configuration of two hard drives in this enclosure is MUCH faster performing than the disks by themselves. The drive enclosure manages the RAID and power to the drives (no power switch). Yes, it has a fan, but I can barely hear it close up, plus the whole shebang NEVER seems to get hot even when I'm working the stuffing out of it. And, SMART status is actively verified.

What's not to like? Well, please OWC, use red LED operating lights instead of blue. Blue light is highly suspected of disturbing human sleep whereas red spectrum is not so. Save your customers' mitochondria! Use red lights. ...still rate the thing highest, however.

Rating: 5/5 Works fine after I installed working disks June 18, 2018 I had to go through the installation twice as one of my drives wouldn't work. The procedure for installing the drives is straightforward if a bit fiddly. You need to be carefully that cables are moved so that the sleeve of the unit can easily enclose the drives. Nice and quiet and just seems to do what is asked of it.

Many thanks

Rating: 5/5 Great way to get started with Thunderbolt May 26, 2018 Now that Firewire is no longer supported on Apple iMacs, these enclosures are a great upgrade for users wishing to daisy chain multiple external drives without hubs or tying up several ports and desk space. Adding drives is very easy with with just a screwdriver. All the screws are included. Configuring to RAID or independent is as simple as turning a switch before initially powering up. The somewhat otherwise pricey Thunderbolt cables are included but the newer iMacs do require a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. The included directions are very clear and thorough both online and in print. Build quality is very solid. Fan noise is noticeable but not annoying. I use these drives for media and backup and really appreciate the speed of Thunderbolt 2. For a reasonable cost I was able to migrate storage to a modern expandable interface that should be around for a while.

Rating: 5/5 Recovers USB Ports February 27, 2018 Bought 0 Drive version for my Mac Pro 2013. The Mac’s internal 256GB SS PCIe drive is too small to be useful, since Apple forces you to put apps on the boot drive. Most external drives are USB 3, so the 4 ports get used up quickly. Meanwhile there are few Thunberbolt 2 options out there — and they’re expensive. So, I installed my own hybrid (FireCuda) drives in this housing, giving me great performance at low cost. Both drives are on one Thunderbolt 2, freeing up all of my USB ports. I’ll probably buy a second one to backup the main drives. Case color looks good next to Mac Pro. Would only wish for a smaller version just for 2.5” drives.

Rating: 4/5 Fast Thunderbolt 2 enclosure, though extra speed is not critical for my Time Machine backups June 20, 2017 I purchased an *open box* 0TB Mercury Elite Pro Dual USB 3.1 Gen 1 & Thunderbolt 2 RAID enclosure to replace a 2-year-old major-brand 2-drive Network Area Storage unit configured as RAID1 that would occasionally become invisible to Time Machine as a backup volume.

I kept seeing support discussions about non-Apple NAS devices not being 100% reliable for Time Machine backups and restores. (If it's NOT 100% reliable, there's not much point in doing it, right?) So I selected this OWC RAID unit to replace it, moving the two 3TB WD Red drives from the NAS, and starting a new series of RAID1 Time Machine backups with this unit now directly connected to my late 2012 2.3Ghz i7 Mac mini.

Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3.1 Gen 1 each offer far more throughput than I need for Time Machine backups to two 5900rpm 3TB WD Red NAS drives configured as RAID1. I was looking for reliability, not ultimate performance. In the future when I run out of internal drive capacity in the Mac mini, I might re-purpose this unit with SSD's. so I can take better advantage of the Thunderbolt 2 speed.

The unit includes two Thunderbolt 2 ports (and a single USB 3.1 Gen 1 port, but I'm not using USB, nor have I tested it, so I'm not reviewing that feature). I have an older G-Drive 3TB Thunderbolt 1 single-drive enclosure piggybacked onto this unit, and it continues to perform flawlessly as connected.

This *open box* unit was complete, and in perfect condition, with all parts and accessories included. (One damaged corner of the original product carton leads me to believe that the reason this box was opened was to check the condition of the unit and make sure it wasn't damaged during original shipment to OWC. I do truly appreciate their extra caution! It's one of the reasons I keep coming back to OWC.)

The only downside I noted during installation was that I had to fetch a Phillips screwdriver to mount the rotational WD Red hard drives into the driver carriers before inserting them into this unit. Doing that for one enclosure as a home hobbyist is no big deal. If I was supporting client with a building full of these enclosures, I'd probably look for a 'tool-less' RAID enclosure solution.

Rating: 5/5 Great product, super service! March 9, 2017 My Mercury Elite Pro Dual arrived with the cable for the LED on the front panel disconnected. I didn't notice this, but did notice no LED when I powered on first time.

I got a call from OWC (Cynthia) out of the blue a day later and she was able to guide me through the issue. Apparently, a batch came from the assembly line like this and they didn't catch them all... no biggie.

I dropped a Seagate 2TB SSHD in slot 1 (my boot drive), and a 3TB WD drive in the second slot. I then installed macOS, migrated my Time Machine backup to the 2TB drive, and booted to my familiar Mac Pro 3,1 settings on a new Mini (2014 model). The 3TB drive contains an extensive iTunes media library (too big for the boot drive I had on Mac Pro), and everything worked flawlessly. The boot time for the SSHD is slightly faster than the 5400rpm drive on the mini, but once booted, it is far faster launching apps and documents than the native drive. I suspect this boot delay is due to the OS detecting the external Thunderbolt connected drives before initiating the boot sequence. Certainly not as fast as SSD, but then the cost of 2TB SSHD vs 1TB SSD is a significant savings worth a few extra seconds of boot time.

The 3TB drive is infinitely faster access, load and write than when it was internal on the Pro (SATA1). And copying files from the two drives in the Mercury Elite is lightning fast.

I was not interested in RAID, instead I wanted a fast external drive for booting (to avoid tearing the mini apart to replace the HDD), and a fast external drive for my media library. This product meets the needs flawlessly.

Some have commented on fan noise. Yes, the fan does make a bit of noise, but not so much that it is disturbing. Eventually, this unit will go in a ventilated cabinet that will mute the noise, so this is not a concern for me.

Rating: 3/5 A functional, basic, enclosure February 26, 2017 When I received this drive, I was a bit surprised that it wasn't a 2-bay version of the extremely versatile ThunderBay-4. The ThunderBay-4 is designed for drive hot-swap. Each drive is mounted in a rail-cage which is easily slid in/out of the enclosure. Installing drives the the Mercury Elite Pro Dual was not difficult, but required disassembly of the enclosure, screw-mounting drives and connecting cables (in a tight space). Two drives are installed so they sit atop one another. I'm concerned that this is less than optimal for cooling and may contribute to premature drive failure. Only time will tell. Overall, this is a reasonably priced enclosure, offering hardware Raid-0 and Raid-1. Its Thunderbolt-2 performance is as expected. My experience with OWC has always been positive and I expect they will stand behind their product.

Rating: 4/5 Great little box, fan could be quieter December 21, 2016 After reading several reviews of the previous model, I wasn't sure if the white noise of the fan would be an issue or not. Then I saw that the newer model was realized with Thunderbolt 2 support. So I pulled the pin and ordered one, along with a Neptune 480GB SSD, Adaptadrive sled, and a Toshiba 4TB HD. Now I feel like I have the iMac that I should have had all along. BIG storage from the 4TB HD, and super speed from the SSD.

My iMac came with a conventional HD installed. Since it's a Late 2015 model, swapping it out would be a pain. So initially I got a Mercury Elite Pro Mini enclosure with an SSD inside. I set that up as my system drive and that alone was a significant improvement in boot time and program loading.

But along comes this little screamer. After I set it up and cloned my existing system drive to the SSD, boot times improved by around 7 seconds. (and I was pretty happy with the USB3 enclosure) Both Apple apps and MS Office apps load a lot faster also. I don't have hard benchmarks on those, but app load time is about perception. My perception is that I will wait a lot less with this baby.

It's a well made box also. The drive mounting assembly and the outer case are all metal. I was actually a bit surprised when I first unboxed it as it was a bit heavier than I expected. It was also a bit smaller than I expected. Length-wise it's a couple inches longer than your standard 3.5" HD. But the height and width are just slightly more. The small footprint makes it easy to stash just about anywhere. All the mounting holes line up beautifully and installation was quite easy. The hardest part was reading the labels for which channel was A or B. (yep, had to grab my glasses for that--50 year old eyes)

Ah, but the fan noise. It's noticeable in a quite office such as mine. But it's not loud enough to be an irritation. What is most noisy is my selection of 4TB HD that I put in. So if you have quieter HD's or load it with SSD's only it should be better. I would suggest OWC employ the wisdom of Apple in this regard though. When my fans kick up on my iMac, I can barely hear them at all.
