NVMe. PCIe. What’s It Mean to Me?
At the heart of the ThunderBay Flex 8 capabilities are two cutting-edge technology standards: NVMe and PCIe. Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) optimizes the performance of modern flash technology over the Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) standard. It enables significantly faster SSD performance with a more direct and optimized path to a computer’s processor.
Tying both of these technologies together is the Thunderbolt 3 interface which uses the PCIe bus. This interface offers the fastest data transfers possible on a single cable between computers and peripherals like storage solutions, docks, and expansion devices while also supplying charging power.
The Future Standard of Storage Available Today
Right out of the packaging, all eight bays can utilize SATA 6Gb/s 2.5-inch SSDs or 3.5-inch HDDs. To take advantage of 40Gb/s PCIe technology, the top four bays are NVMe U.2 SSD ready. These emerging super-fast SSDs enable ThunderBay Flex 8 to meet the future storage needs of content creators and video production pros.
By installing an OWC U.2 NVMe Interchange System carrier tray (sold separately) with a built-in U.2 connector into a ThunderBay Flex 8 drive tray, you can protect the U.2 SSD drive’s connector from repeated install/removal wear for improved drive longevity and investment. When done with your shoot, just ship the lightweight protective carrier and drive to the lab where the carrier can be installed into an OWC Helios 3S equipped with the OWC Interchange System. It’s a complete solution to safeguard your data while lowering shipping costs.

Done with the drives but need the docking connectivity? Eject the ThunderBay Flex 8 drives and any external drives in a single click with the free OWC Dock Ejector app. It ensures all data has been written before any drive is unmounted to protect against data loss. It will even warn you from accidentally ejecting an in-use drive.

A virtual buffet of productivity-enhancing possibilities awaits you with the docking connections built into ThunderBay Flex 8. Power your notebook with up to 85W power delivery while capturing multi-stream hi-res footage at full frame rate. Connect audio and video mixers, digital camera, keyboards, and other peripherals and charge mobile devices via one USB-C and two USB-A 10Gb/s ports. Ingest and work with 4/8K RAW video and RAW photo files immediately at speeds up to 985MB/s with frontside SD 4.0 and CFexpress card readers. By removing the enclosure’s side panel, you can expand your capabilities by installing a half-length, full-height, single-width expansion card in the PCIe x16 connector/x4 lanes slot. OWC Thunderbolt 3 Cable Included
OWC ThunderBay Flex 8 comes with a certified 0.7 meter OWC Thunderbolt 3 cable, with other lengths from 0.5 meter to 2.0 meters available separately.
  1. SAS drives are supported with SAS drive controller card (available separately).
  2. Up to four U.2 drives are supported. M.2 drives are also supported with M.2 to U.2 adapter (available separately).
  3. Apple Mac models with Thunderbolt 2/Thunderbolt ports can be connected using an Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter (sold separately). This configuration provides data transfer at up to 20Gb/s but does not support notebook charging.
  4. Full DisplayPort 1.4 capabilities depends on host computer support of DisplayPort 1.4 specification through its Thunderbolt 3 connection, host computer GPU capabilities, and connecting cable capabilities.

Rating: 5/5 Just Buy It August 25, 2021 Coming from another brand where we had three of their 8-bay units. They would only accept very few types of "approved" type HDD's. Lots of headaches. Moved to OWC and I am thrilled with the Thunderbay Flex 8. We just added a second one and will buy a third next month. Softraid is so much better than the raid software the other brand required that you must use. Everything is smooth and great quality. Very pleased.

Rating: 5/5 MacPro(2008) replacement May 14, 2021 I purchased this after ordering the Apple M1 Mac mini. This is to replace my MacPro (2008). I was able to transfer all of my drives from the MacPro into this 1 device with no issues. The drives that were setup as software raid0 on the MacPro were seen by the M1 Mac mini and I was able to transfer the data to a singe 8TB drive to support iTunes media. The performance has been great I have not had any issues with this product. No regrets. Worth every penny.

Rating: 5/5 Takes over for my 2011 Mac Pro April 29, 2021 I loved my 12 core 2011 Mac Pro. I had 4, 6 terabyte drives built in and a 1 terabyte PCIe SSD card. Time to move on and get a new Mac. I got a new intel 2020 27” iMac. (M1 Macs can’t run standard Windows)I ordered it with a soldered in 1 terabyte SSD. What to do about my extra drives? OWC offered the Thunder Bay 8. I put in my original 4 drives in the top 4 slots and put in 4 new 6 terabyte which I set up with with SoftRaid 6 running in Raid 5. My original drives I had as JBODs It has a PCIe slot where I put in the SSD card. Drive replacement was very easy. PCIe installation is a little trickier. I had to remove 4 Allen screws to remove the side cover. Not difficult but a latch would make access easier. Hooked it up and it worked perfectly. Raid set up was easy. OWC offers great documentation and videos. Likes: Fan is quiet and frame goes into low power standby mode automatically when computer is asleep or off. Easy drive replacement. Similar in looks to old MacPro but half the size. Well built.

Rating: 5/5 Rock solid performance September 17, 2020 Absolutely love this RAID. I particularly love how mine is laid out. I have a RAID 0 in the first row with super fast SSD's, and a RAID 5 in the second row. I use the first one for editing, and the second one for archiving. I could easily edit off of the second drive if I need to, as it's plenty fast for most purposes. By the first RAID is incredibly fast. Saves me a ton of time editing. I also love that I can plug in other devices and cards, I have this feature quite a bit. Very well thought out product, rock solid.
