Mac OS10.4.11 with dual 2.5GHz PPC
I realize my Mac G5 is somewhat outdated, but for sure there are thousands out there using this OS/hardware combo, so I feel it's still valid. This burner performs at 4X speed maximum on my Mac. While this is decidedly slow, I sometimes choose a slower burn speed even if faster speeds are available. I'm just superstitious about writing data as error free as possible.
This LG DVD burner came from OWC, still my preferred Mac vendor by far. It works OK if you know a little about your Mac and you don't mind using Disk Utility to do some simple operations, like eject the DVD, or get the Mac to recognize it.
I find that even this DVD burner is plugged in, online and ready to burn, I don't see it on my Desktop or in Finder. So when you click "Burn", and OS10.4.11 prompts "Insert blank disc", I simply put in the blank DVD, and close the tray with the button, and wait. After about 15 secs my MacG5 PPC recognizes it and the burning starts.
Ejecting the DVD is easy, because once the files are written, the icon of the DVD does show on my desktop, and I can drag it to the trash/eject as normal. But it has been weird at least once, where I needed disc utility to either make it show up or go away.
Don't be tricked into the slim DVD burner you can buy at the Apple store for about $90, the one listed for use with "all Macs with external CD/DVD players" and without any OS compatibility info on the box or in the paperwork. The slim DVD burner is not recognized by OS10.4.11
