Rating: 5/5 Survived Two Years' Intensive Use March 14, 2017 I purchased this HDD back in November 2014 to replace the failing HDD in my MacBook Pro. Installation was blessedly simple, and it's survived tremendous abuse since. (I'm a public school teacher and graduate student, and this thing has been my constant companion for two years.) The HDD finally died a couple weeks back, but with plenty of early signs of failure.

Overall, very pleased with the drive's performance. Of course it would be ideal if it'd lasted another two years, but given the amount of abuse the system has taken, I feel like I got my money's worth.

Oh, and the online video tutorials made installation easy. Love that feature of OWC services.

Rating: 5/5 Couldn't be any easier! August 13, 2015 Swapped out an existing 250Gb drive for a new 1Tb drive in my daughter's laptop... it couldn't be any easier! I think the whole process to less than 10 minutes and that included watching the video on this site on "how-to". Having the external case for the old drive made it super simple to move the data to the new drive and she was up and running in just a few hours. No complaints and a happy laptop owner!

Rating: 5/5 Easy and worth every penny! October 18, 2014 I bought this 1.0TB DIY HD kit along with a set of upgrade OWC RAM for my aluminum MacBook Pro and a few other small trinkets, and watched the install video while waiting for the package to arrive.

When it got here I checked to make certain I got everything and unpacked it all. I cleared a space, put on an old antistatic wrist strap I had laying around, flipped my MacBook over, grabbed the OWC tools and opened the patient, uh, I mean computer.

Took me all of half an hour to replace the old RAM with new and old HD with new.

After formatting the new HD it was just a matter of loading the latest OS X version and all my files onto the machine and I was back in service that evening.

This new hard drive has nearly undetectable noise and vibration, gives me a little longer battery life due to it's low power consumption, and appears to give off essentially *no* heat at all.

The old drive now lives in the included external housing, which was even easier to do. :)

Hardest part was to keep myself from rushing through the job.

I'll admit this is not the first drive from OWC I've dropped in to one of my Macs, nor will it be the last, and not once have I ever had the slightest problem simply following OWC's instructions.

Thanks once again, guys!

Rating: 4/5 Nice simple external drive September 8, 2014 I purchased this product to upgrade the HD in my 2009 MacMini. I was originally running Snow Leopard, but I wanted the new drive in place before I upgraded to Mavericks. Assembly of the bare drive into the enclosure is very straight forward. Then I cloned the original 160GB SL drive to the 500GB HGST drive using Disk Utility. Following the instructions on OWC website, I disassemble my MacMini and upgraded RAM and swapped the hard drives, putting my original 160GB drive into the enclosure. The new drive booted right away and then I proceeded to upgrade to Mavericks. Once the Mavericks upgrade was stable, I cloned the new drive to my old drive so that I have a bootable backup of Mavericks. Since the old drive was smaller than my new drive, Disk Utility would not work for me so I used DataBackup3 instead and that worked fine.

I did not give the product 5 stars because being very simple, the controller in the enclosure won't put the harddrive to sleep when the computer goes to sleep. But as a backup boot, it works fine.

Rating: 5/5 Easy Installation of Hard Drive August 27, 2014 I decided to upgrade my mid 2009 white Macbook. I upgraded the ram to 4GB and I upgraded the hard drive to the HGST 500GB 7200rpm DYI kit which came with the drive, a hard drive enclosure to use your old drive as a external drive and a tool kit.. OWC had everything I needed for the upgrades at a reasonable price. The installation is quite simple for the first timer if you follow the instructions and watch the videos from the OWC website. My Macbook now is quick and more responsive and is up to speed as some newer models. I am glad I found the OWC website great products, do your research compare and you can't go wrong.

Rating: 5/5 Great value January 19, 2014 Love the drive as well as the enclosure. One must realize, however, that this is an USB drive, so throughput is limited to that bus speed.' Size and ease of installation into the enclosure are good. 640gb is certainly OK for my use, running Linux Mint on an external device as a second OS. 640 gb is extremely, really overkill for Linux, but storing media from and for the OS make it an ideal size.

Rating: 5/5 Easy peasy installation July 16, 2013 I inherited a 2006 MacBook Pro with 1 GB of RAM and a 150 GB hard drive. The hard drive had only 15 GB free and the overall performance was slow, slow, slow. I ordered the 4 GB RAM kit for this model and the 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive kit and wow--it's turbocharged! It performs almost as well as my 2009 MacBook Pro with 8 GB RAM.

Installation was a piece of cake--it took barely 10 minutes from start to finish. I installed the old hard drive in the provided enclosure and it's a great backup. I would recommend this to anyone.

Rating: 5/5 terrific upgrade to my old MaBook July 8, 2013 I have a 5 year old MacBook which I upgraded with OWC memory (up from 2 to 4GB) and hard disk (up from 250GB to 1TB) last week. The Mac had been struggling to even run Iphoto by itself and the hard-disk was down to about 10% free and I figured that was part of the slow processing problem. I ran benchmarks after the memory upgrade and again after the disk upgrade and the test numbers didn't show much improvement. But when I started using the system for my own apps the difference was astounding! I am now able to run Iphoto, email and several other apps concurrently and it all runs very fast, not to mention that my disk management worries are resolved for the next few years. I'm now starting to think about upgrading my IMac as well.

My only suggestion for improvement would be to provide an overview roadmap of how to do these upgrades. It took me a while to understand when I might use cloning as opposed to Migration Assistant, etc. I've never done this before so I ran multiple backups of all my data prior to touching the system so I was prepared for the worst, but it was actually pretty straightforward.

Rating: 5/5 Piece-of-cake upgrade for your Mac or PC February 18, 2013 I actually have bought two of these (at different times), plus another upgrade kit with this same enclosure. The enclosure goes together quickly & is excellent for eSATA 2.5 inch drives, whether you will use the spacious 1TB drive included, or if you put the huge drive in your Mac and pull the original drive for extra storage outside of your Mac. I put my iTunes library in one of these enclosures, so I can easily swap it between two of my Macs (less problems syncing the libraries). Yeah, I think OWC has a blog article on how to move your iTunes library (or even your home directory) to an external drive like this one. ;-)

Excellent drive, simple to setup for an additional external drive, even if you are not technically inclined. If you can manage a screwdriver (included in the upgrade kit) and plug a USB cable into the back of the enclosure and other end into a USB port on your Mac, you're in business! Only thing I had to add was to write the drive capacity on the underside of the drive, so I could tell apart the 3 different drives I have now.

Rating: 5/5 Awesome product - from outstanding people!!! June 1, 2012 Ordered this drive/enclosure/tools kit on Friday night/Sat. morning of Memorial Day weekend, and by the following Friday a.m., I had it in my hands! Got this because my internal drive on my MacBook Pro (5,1) was getting kinda full (280-290GB of 320GB).

First thing was to put it together and see about formatting the Hitachi 500GB (16MB cache) drive. (I decided to do that and clone my internal drive first, and then later swap the drive in, using the OWC toolkit that comes with the drive & enclosure) That was easy - even if I did read the directions (pretty quick to do that, too) - and then I hooked the enclosure up to the MBP with the USB2 mini-cable that was supplied. Fired up Disk Uitility, and it recognized the drive right away. (Had me wondering if Hitachi had begun pre-formatting their drives for Macs... ;-)

The drive formatted ultra-quickly, and I decided to go ahead and clone my internal drive over to the new one, using Carbon Copy Cloner. That did take some time (well, it was a pretty full drive inside, and these larger drives store more stuff than older ones that we used to use), but no problems (other than a little impatience on my part).

The OWC Express enclosure looks great sitting next to my Mac Book Pro, and I figure that before long I will use the OWC toolkit to move the newer drive and swap it for my current internal drive (as it reaches close to its maximum). It is a very quick drive, and is very affordably priced. Another nice thing with the drive is the great support - if I have any questions or problems, I know that OWC's support team is great for answering them. (Though I've never had major problems with anything I've purchased from OWC)

OWC is great because their site can tell you when you're looking there whether a drive/memory/other accessory items will fit/be right for your Mac model. Even in the rare occasions when I can't find the info for sure, the support techs can give me an answer by email (or phone, depending on when I am checking...), and there's also live chat (which is now available all the time). Even if live chat is all tied up with other people, you can leave your question and they will get back to you with an answer. Great support!

I have bought many items from OWC, allowing me to increase the capacity and capabilities of Macs that I have owned, and being my primary source for expanding my Mac, or questions about 'Can I do this?', 'Is there a drive that will fit in my model?' and others. If OWC doesn't have the item I'm after, they may know who might - but it also may be that it isn't available much of anywhere. Great folks, very reasonable prices, super support, well worth dealing with!

Rating: 4/5 Good Speed, Power Hungry April 23, 2012 The drive and DIY kit were great. Easy to install and clone my old drive. The drive isn't any louder than the original 250GB drive, but it does use a lot more power. I also upgraded my memory from 2GB to 6GB so that may be sucking a lot of power now. I may find a slower drive so I can get longer battery life (what I loved most about my macbook) and use this one as an external storage/backup using the enclosure kit.

Rating: 5/5 Great drive - upgraded Macbook Pro early 2006 (1.1) model March 7, 2012 I got the DYI upgrade kit and USB 3.0 enclosure and am very happy with the experience and especially happy to have 750 GB (up from 100 GB) internal storage.

The DIY video on this site was very helpful - I've never been inside the machine before - but with the kit and after watching the video 4-5 times I felt very confident about doing it and it went just as expected.

To do the upgrade: I cloned (with CCC) the original HD to a partition on an external 2TB backup drive, then made sure it was also backed up (Time Machine to a different partition on the 2TB drive). Then I cloned (with CCC) the original drive onto this new drive in the OWC enclosure, and finally physically swapped the two drives (~15 minutes to put the new drive in the macbook).

The only hiccup was that although i could boot off the cloned image on my 2TB external (firewire) drive, I could not boot off the cloned image on the new disk when it was external. My guess is this is due to my getting the USB 3.0 enclosure and if I had stuck with the 2.0 enclosure i would have not have hit this problem. (The problem was that when I turned the system on and held the ALT key, it saw the external drive in the enclosure but not as a boot device. That was strange, because the system had no trouble seeing the drive as a regular device when it was booted on the original HD). But since the CCC copy had gone fine I swapped the old and new HDs anyway, and the system booted up just fine on the new Hitachi disk when it was internal. So I assume the boot problem was related to the USB 3.0 enclosure. (I have not tried booting off the original 100GB disk now that it is in the enclosure to verify that).

Anyway, I didn't really need that to work as it was just to test the clone before swapping the disks.

The new disk works great as an internal drive. It seems to use less energy than the original (battery seems to last 20% or more longer). Heat seems to be about the same, system speed (boot, iPhoto, GarageBand) is good - the same as before if not better. And wow all that space! After years of juggling external drives to hold all my photos, now all my iPhoto libraries fit on the external, and I've got 500 GB of free space. What a feeling of freedom! Definitely worth the cost and effort - I feel like I've got a new system again with years of space-worry-free use ahead.

Thank you Macsales / OWC!

Rating: 4/5 Good Upgrade from Factory Hard Drive February 7, 2012 Great hard drive upgrade from the factory default (I had 100GB on my mid 2009 MacBook Pro). You can feel the increase in speed. Of course a SSD would have been better but I wanted higher capacity for my data and virtual machines. I was already fed up carrying multiple portable drives. This drive is also more noisy, and the noise IS noticeably more prominent compared to the factory default drive. However you will get used to the noise over time (I have, in the last two months. Purchased end Dec 2011). I did not have to switch off the sudden motion detector, but I dont travel much with my comp on. Make sure you get the enclosure and the DIY kit. (a very good bargain if you are ok with the USB only option. I wanted Firewire, but it turned out to be pretty expensive. Ended up getting USB only). With the DIY kit, installation was pretty simple. Overall a worthwhile upgrade.

Rating: 5/5 Upgrade a mid 2009 Mac Book Pro September 3, 2011 Great product, I bought this 750Gb 7200rpm Hitachi HD, to mi MBPro because I just run out of space in the drive, the Hitachi 7K750 HD has very good reviews, and I can confirm them, it runs easy, very very quiet, the reading/writing speeds are good too. The DIY kit with the enclosure it's genius because you can use your old drive as an external HD. I totally recommend buy this drive to upgrade any MBPro, the process it's easy and there is a video that shows you how it's done. MacSales are also great, they have a awesome call center, very helpful.
