Upgrade/Replace your internal drive
The Drive and Tools you need to Upgrade/Replace the existing 2.5" Drive in your laptop, Mac mini, Xbox, PS3, etc + make the drive being replaced an External for data transfer, backup, and/or additional portable storage.

Everything you need in one package, immediately ready to assemble and:
  • Backup and store your data with style and confidence.
  • Take your data with you - small enough to keep in a pocket!
  • Easily add additional laptop storage with no AC adapter required.
Examples of how this bus-powered Express bundle can be used in real world situations:

Power Users / Travelers: Relocate your "home folder" to your Express and have your files with you at home, at work or on the road without the need to synchronize your machines.

Laptop Owners: Clone your current internal SATA hard drive in your laptop to the new drive. Then install the new, larger drive in your laptop and keep the smaller drive in your Express for additional storage space.

iTunes Aficionados: Keep a copy of your iTunes library on your external drive to play on multiple machines.

Gamers: Add additional storage to your XBox 360 or PS3 game console to store music, media, and other downloads. PS3 even includes a backup utility to protect your internal drive's data.

For Everyone: Have the piece of mind of a complete backup plan. Create a bootable clone of your hard drive at regular intervals so if your computer goes down, your productivity doesn't go down with it. Boot to another computer and keep on working!

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

While a 6G SSD does function, it will only do so at SATA Revision 1.0 (1.5Gb/s, 150MB/s) speeds rather that the SATA Revision 2.0 (3.0Gb/s 300MB/s) speed the computer can deliver.
The Mercury Electra 3G SSD is the OWC recommended upgrade option for the Macs listed in the special note above.

Rating: 5/5 A new lease on life August 22, 2020 The 1.0TB Mercury Electra 6G SSD gave my son's mid-2012 MacBook Pro—which he was on the verge of replacing because it had become so sluggish—a new lease on life. He says it's like having a brand new computer. I know exactly what he means, having replaced the HDD in my own mid-2012 MacBook Pro a couple of years ago with the very same OWC SDD.

Rating: 5/5 So FAST!! August 20, 2020 This made my mid 2012 machine into a brand new animal. Boot times are so fast. Apps open with a quick snap again. Less hangups and system freezes. Worth every penny! A breeze to install. Had an issue with formatting (my mistake). A quick chat with a tech support person here and I was restoring my drive in no time. I've used OWC products for after market on my machine for years. They've always been high quality and reliable. This SSD is no different. One of the best upgrades I've ever made.

Rating: 5/5 My junk heap Mac now runs INCREDIBLY FAST July 4, 2020 AMAZINGLY FAST! Faster than my Mac ever could. I had serious doubts whether I chose the right product. The more I read technical sites about my hardware, I became confident it was the proper choice. If I purchased too fast an SSD, the negotiated speed would be slower than this device. This device is optimal for my Mac. Now my last season’s crop of Mac FLIES LIKE A JET STREAM!

Rating: 5/5 Great SSD July 3, 2020 I received my order within a couple of days and installed it on the weekend following. The SSD has breathed new life into my 2012 MacBook Pro. Goes from cold boot to desktop in about 15 seconds. Applications now open immediately. Now my Mac runs the way I always expected it to when I first bought it.

Rating: 5/5 Excellent Upgrade, no more spinning beach balls June 13, 2020 I wish I had upgraded my hard drive sooner. I have been using it for nearly a year now, and it has kept me from the need to purchase a new computer. I also like the newer APFS format for SSD drives that Apple uses. It's worth the money, SSD prices have really fallen the past several years. The OWC brand is guaranteed to work with Macs. I also upgraded the RAM to 16GB, also a worthy upgrade to do at the same time. OWC is an excellent value and they make it really easy to upgrade!

Rating: 4/5 Good value; easy to install May 18, 2020 Purchased this kit to upgrade my 9,2 MacBook Pro. I used 'Chat' tech assist before buying to get questions answered. Installation videos were helpful and covered nearly all contingencies. Kit arrived with everything needed - enclosure, cable, tools, and SSD. The quality of the supplied precision screwdrivers is poor - the Philips head broke after its first use. Also, during installation, the video did not help choose the type of disk format to use (e.g., APFS case sensitive or not; encrypted or not). If you are going to transfer files from your old drive, ensure you format to the same spec as the old. Otherwise, you cannot transfer files including the OS. I had to start all over again once I learned my old format. And, dedicate about two hours to this process. Bottom Line: A very good investment to prolong the life of an older MacBook. Recommended.

Rating: 5/5 major speed upgrade on 2012 MacBook Pro December 21, 2019 So far, this feels like a new laptop. The instructions provided by OWC made it dead simple to replace my OEM drive, perform a fresh install of the OS, and restore my data. The whole process took about 2 hours of my time, with the data migration running overnight. Rebooting now takes a fraction of what it used to and apps open almost instantly - even Photos.

I don't know if my OEM drive had started to fail or if it was just too full to function efficiently but replacing the 500Gb drive (with about 100Gb free) with a 1Tb SSD has made a world of difference. Kudos to the OWC team for a painless order, delivery, and upgrade experience. Would recommend this to anyone with an aging MBP with a fullish hard drive.

Rating: 5/5 Old Slow Laptop No More December 11, 2019 My old 2011 non-Retina MacBook Pro had become so slow and unpredictable that I cringed when thinking about using it. A deep system cleaning helped some but I felt a small investment in a RAM and SSD upgrade might be worth it. I replaced the 4 GB of factory RAM with 16 GB OWC RAM and at the same time replaced the 320 GB HD with a 500 GB SSD from macsales. Install was easy with the tools provided. I cloned my HD to the new SSD using SuperDuper!. The first time I powered up, everything was faster. Much faster. After a few weeks of usage, same: everything is super fast. Booting up, waking up, application opening/switching/quitting/etc, everything. It would be nice to know how much to attribute the performance changes to RAM vs SSD but for less than the price of a couple of cases of fancy beer, I'm thrilled to have what is essentially a brand new laptop. Now, my original battery is rather wimpy so maybe an upgrade there is in order.

Rating: 5/5 New life to an Old(er) MacMini September 24, 2019 I recently ordered and installed the 1.0TB Mercury Electra 6G SSD into my 2012 i5 MacMini. The previous HD was 500 Gb and starting to lag and make noises. I followed the easy DIY video from MacSales for the new SSD install. Once installed into the Mini, I used the TimeMachine restore to reinstall. After a few hours, my Mini was better than new. Quick to wake, programs loading much faster, and no noise. For the price, and ease of install, this was a well with upgrade.

Rating: 5/5 Do This... You will be so happy with your MacBook! August 31, 2019 I don't really write reviews... for anything. However, this time I had to log back in to encourage anyone thinking about changing out their IDE drive for an SSD from OWC, to stop procrastinating and give it a try. I maxed out the RAM in my 2012 MacBook a couple of years ago, which gave it a boost. However, in recent days it has been so slow, and so full, that it was a frustration to use. A lack of space on your hard disc leaves the operating system with minimal space for its cache. A nearly full IDE drive from 2012 is just too slow to offer a good experience in 2019. However, with my new 2TB SSD from OWC, my MacBook boots in about 10 seconds. (It used to take about 3 or 4 minutes.) Also, I highly recommend you follow OWC's method for setting up the drive and moving over your data. I formatted my drive, reinstalled the operating system and then pulled in my data from a Time Machine backup. It was not very hard to do, and now it's as if I have a new machine.

Rating: 5/5 It is a worth to upgrade with SSD June 21, 2019 A couple of months back upgraded RAM to 8G from 4G for my MacBook Pro 13" late 2011 with OWC RAM. It was a boost up, performance was improved significantly yet not a complete one. As such, decided to go ahead with SSD upgrade too. Just swapped with SSD a couple of days ago - the result was unbelievable. 7+ year old machine works better than when it was new. It is a huge huge performance improvement. With upgraded RAM you will definitely feel the difference but combination with SSD - it is speechless. If you have an intention to prolong the life of your old MacBook Pro, a very simple thing to do is upgrade RAM (if it is 4G which is default) & SSD. Don't need to be an expert to do the task - just follow simple instruction, it is straight forward and everyone can do it. Give it a try!

Rating: 5/5 New Life for an Old Friend February 5, 2019 My MacBookPro early 2011 was running out of space on the 750GB drive and getting very slow. I cloned the 2T SSD using the disk utility and fired it up. Fast as fast can be. The difference is night and day and so easy to do. The process requires patience because it took 14 hours to clone the new drive mostly because it was almost full. But once installed this jack rabbit can run. It cold boots in less than a minute and apps load instantaneously. For the price of the SSD it's like getting a whole new machine.

Rating: 5/5 Like a new computer now! December 7, 2018 so much faster to load now - and the instructional video was wonderfully accurate - it took me no time at all to remove and install. The added plus of the casing to put the old drive in made it easy to clone the old contents to the new drive. Overall an excellent product and extremely helpful videos!

Rating: 5/5 High quality product at valuable price November 1, 2018 This is my second SSD from OWC and I am again impressed. The purchase process was simple, delivery was fast, and I found all of the installations steps necessary through the OWC website. My late 2012 Mac mini has a new lease on life with its 1Tb SSD. These guys are pros and I would recommend anyone who needs DIY mac equivalent hardware look no further than OWC.

Rating: 5/5 Great product and service by OWC September 8, 2018 After an easy installation process(thanks to the very helpful video on the OWC website), I just wished I would have done this years earlier. My MacBook Pro mid 2012 is a world better now and handles well my music and video editing tasks. I would add that OWC is priced fairly, considering they are very reliable for Apple products. I have used the supplied enclosure for cloning my original HDD and it is a good piece to have if you want to use a similar drive as a backup or an external drive. The costumer service was helpful and to the point.

Rating: 5/5 Great SSD from OWC August 16, 2018 I purchased this SSD upgrade kit to upgrade the hard drive in my wife’s mid-2012 12” MacBook Pro because she was becoming frustrated with how slow it was becoming. I had previously upgraded some HDs to OWC SSDs in my computers (2008 and 2012 15” MBPs) and assured her that she’d be happy with the upgrade. Delivery was quick and, thanks to the OWC installation videos (and my experience), swapping out the drive was very easy. It took a few hours to migrate the data from her old drive to the new but, other than having to enter a couple of passwords, everything was migrated with no problems. Time Machine backups are working just like they were with the old HD. Best of all, startup time for her MBP went from about 2-1/2 minutes to about 48 seconds. She’s pretty happy.

Rating: 5/5 AWESOME PRODUCT!!! May 15, 2018 My 2011 MacBook Pro had really been struggling. I finally bit the bullet and bought a new SSD from OWC and boy am I pleased!! It literally runs like a brand new MacBook and is even faster than when I first purchased it.

Aside from the amazing product, I was having trouble installing the new OS after putting in my new SSD. Robert J stayed on live chat with me for 4 hours and explained every possible detail to me to help me figure out the problem I was having. I got the new OS installed and got all of my previous info transferred over from my old hard drive. 10/10 would recommend this product AND buying from this great company. I will definitely be coming back with any other computer needs I have. Thanks guys!!! Jonathan

Rating: 5/5 Fast drive, easy install May 3, 2018 I've installed a few of these for friends and family to breathe new life into old MacBooks. Makes a tremendous difference. Super easy to install, and great performance for an amazing price. Love getting the clamshell for the old drive and then encouraging people to use the old slow HDD as a time machine backup disk.

Great value, no complaints!
