Upgrade/Replace your internal drive
The Drive and Tools you need to Upgrade/Replace the existing 2.5" Drive in your laptop, Mac mini, Xbox, PS3, etc + make the drive being replaced an External for data transfer, backup, and/or additional portable storage.

Everything you need in one package, immediately ready to assemble and:
  • Backup and store your data with style and confidence.
  • Take your data with you - small enough to keep in a pocket!
  • Easily add additional laptop storage with no AC adapter required.
Examples of how this bus-powered Express bundle can be used in real world situations:

Power Users / Travelers: Relocate your "home folder" to your Express and have your files with you at home, at work or on the road without the need to synchronize your machines.

Laptop Owners: Clone your current internal SATA hard drive in your laptop to the new drive. Then install the new, larger drive in your laptop and keep the smaller drive in your Express for additional storage space.

iTunes Aficionados: Keep a copy of your iTunes library on your external drive to play on multiple machines.

Gamers: Add additional storage to your XBox 360 or PS3 game console to store music, media, and other downloads. PS3 even includes a backup utility to protect your internal drive's data.

For Everyone: Have the piece of mind of a complete backup plan. Create a bootable clone of your hard drive at regular intervals so if your computer goes down, your productivity doesn't go down with it. Boot to another computer and keep on working!

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 Great! August 20, 2016 I installed the SSHD on my granddaughter's MacBook Pro And it gave her more than enough storage for college. No problems, just followed the instructions. Install took about 20 minutes.

Rating: 5/5 Much faster than I imagined August 19, 2016 I ordered this SSD because everything on my Macbook Pro was Sloooww. I could not believe how quickly it boots even though I had viewed the comparison videos. The many delays in opening apps and files have dwindled fantastically.

Rating: 5/5 A MUST purchase upgrade, no exceptions! August 18, 2016 The SSD put life back into my 15" 2011 MBP. I had already replaced the original HD with a 750GB 7200rpm drive a few years ago, however boot time and the overall speed of the computer was getting really annoying. After installing this SSD drive and cloning back my setup, the computer feels like a completely different machine! Boot time is almost as fast as my nephew's 2016 MBP and programs are MUCH (MUCH) faster! Well worth the money, no question about it.

Rating: 5/5 Wow! (Again) August 16, 2016 This is the second HD replacement I have done in the past week. Please see my other review for the 1TB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD. I was so happy with that product that I ordered this SSD (and 16GB new memory) for a mid-2012 13inch MacBook Pro with 4GB and 2.5GHz Intel Core i5. As before, I used Carbon Copy Cloner before replacing the old and slow HDD with the new and amazingly fast 1TB Mercury Electra 6G SSD. I followed all the instructions in the installation video. This has breathed new life into what was a laptop about to be discarded or given away. I am very happy with this product! I hope I can keep on using the MacBook for another four years, or more. The speed of the SSD is just wonderful.

Rating: 5/5 Wow! August 16, 2016 My 13inch MacBook Pro from 2012 was no slouch when it was purchased new with 8GB RAM and the 2.9Ghz Intel Core i7 processor. But that was four years ago. It seemed slow as a snail when compared to today's MacBook Pros with SSDs. After watching the OWC installation videos several times, and reading the reviews, I decided to order the 1TB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD. I also downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner so that I could clone the 750GB HD before installing the SSD. That seemed to be the easiest way to resume use of my MacBook. I would not have to reinstall anything or search for authorization codes for all the software I have on that laptop.

Everything went smoothly, and as planned. The cloning took about six hours. The actual replacement of the HDD with the SSD was done in about five minutes! The only thing that took time was putting back the tiny screws in the bottom cover of the MacBook. I followed all the instructions given in the video. The tools supplied by OWC were exactly what was needed.

The change in my MacBook is just remarkable. It feels like a brand new laptop. Bootup takes about 15 seconds, instead of a couple of minutes or more. Applications load instantly. There is no delay in loading or saving files. I can never go back to using a computer with a spinning hard drive! I have another MacBook of similar vintage. I am going to order another SSD for it!

Rating: 5/5 SSD Is the Way To Go! August 8, 2016 I replaced the hard drive in my late model 2012 Mac Mini and it!s performance improvement was like getting a new computer. The SSD works as advertised there was a measured 6.5 fold boot up speed improvement and launching applications is a pleasure.

Installation isn't for the faint of heart: tiny parts, tiny push connectors, etc. however. It's all doable and worth the effort. It's possible to get cheaper drives on Amazon, but then there's the question of support and here I think OWC shines.

Rating: 5/5 Excellent! August 5, 2016 I purchased row 1TB internal SSD drive plus enclosure for the old one. The video instructions were simple and extremely easy to follow, and the entire conversion took less than 30 minutes for a non-techie. I have an older (late 2008) MBP and the new drive has significantly improved both read and write speeds. Plus for around $20 I now have another drive to use for Time Machine backups. All in all, an excellent deal that I'm sure will last at least five-seven years.

Rating: 5/5 It is alive!! August 5, 2016 My MacBook Pro 8,1 was seriously in a death spiral. HDD becoming unreliable, battery almost completely dead. Got the 480 GB SSD and kit, plus a NewerTech 65WH battery, and the same MacBook Pro is truly like new. Loving the speed of boot-up; no longer waiting on the spinning wheel of death. Installation was super easy and got it all done in 30 minutes -- including the new battery. The videos provided are great and I was able to follow them on mute ;-) Just remember: if you also installed a new battery, don't plug in the battery until after you have installed the SSD. That'll save you from having to pry off the battery connector a second time. Watch both videos before doing anything to understand the best order of operations. Super simple, in any event. Now my iPad might get a little dusty...

Rating: 5/5 Wow. Great revitalization of my MacBook 6.1 August 3, 2016 MacBook 6.1 Installed new OWC SSD and 8G of RAM using supplied kit. Sales, cost, support, instructions, installation: all easy, efficient, and inexpensive. Before my Mac was slow, slow. Now zippy with this upgrade. One RAM module was defective, but replaced easily and quickly. (MAc was already then zippy with 5G RAM (4 + 1) while I waited for full 8G (4 + 4). And also: now I have a backup drive with my old HHD.

Rating: 5/5 Easy and effective July 31, 2016 I upgraded my mid-2009 Macbook Pro from its original 250 Gb hard drive to a 1 Tb SSD. Not only do I have more storage capacity, my computer also runs much faster! For less than $350, I am getting a highly-improved user experience, and will get a longer lifespan out of my computer. Very glad I made the purchase, and the installation kit was well worth the few extra dollars that MacSales.com charged for it!

Rating: 5/5 Amazing product for a great price. July 29, 2016 Before purchasing this, I expected a moderate boost in performance, but what I got feels like a brand new MacBook. Applications now load in seconds and the boot time has vastly improved. The enclosure for my old HD is awesome as well since it gives me the extra storage on the go.

Overall, this was one of the best investments I've made lately. A great mix of quality and price.

Rating: 5/5 An easy and worthwhile upgrade. July 29, 2016 I ordered this kit and additional RAM to upgrade my aging MacBook Pro. Viewing the OWC videos on the installation process gave me the info needed to make the installation go easily and quickly. I cloned the MacBook Pro stock drive to the new SSD before starting the installation. Then I put the SSD and the new RAM into the MacBook Pro and the stock HD into the new enclosure; all worked just fine on the first start up. All told, the upgrade took about one half an hour from start to boot-up.

My experience with all of the items that I've ordered from OWC has been outstanding. Quality products, reasonable prices and great service.

Rating: 5/5 SSD Upgrade- Just Do It! July 23, 2016 I cannot be happier with the performance of my MacBook Pro 17" since upgrading the internal HD to SSD. The installation was just stupid-easy and the difference was quite noticeable. I do have several Macs, including the new 27" iMac. While the performance is not up to that level, it did transform my old friend into a very very capable Mac (running El Capitain) - I no long worry that it may be too old. I simultaneously installed a RAM upgrade to max-ram 8GB.

Finally, I put my old HD into the external case and Viola!! - an external HD ready to be used as my BU drive.

From purchase to installation instructions, to performance- I am very satisfied with my MacSales/OtherWorldComputing experience...

Rating: 5/5 Rejuvenated a mid-2010 macbook July 17, 2016 My daughter's beloved mid-2010 white macbook was getting super slow. We verified that the problem wasn't memory (even though she has only 4gb and COULD be upgraded to 16gb) and it wasn't even the relatively slow Core 2 Duo processor. I had put an SSD in an even older Windows laptop, and the speedup and increase in usability there were amazing, so we decided to go for this SSD upgrade with the enclosure kit and tools, in the hope that it would give her another couple years. We watched the video about the physical drive installation and took our time. That part was very easy. We studied the options regarding reinstallation, and decided to just restore everything as is rather than reinstall the OS, just so we could clearly judge the effect afterwards of just the new SSD. This took a few hours, but we just let it do its thing. After more than a month of use, my daughter is super happy, and the macbook is very usable again. Overall, super satisfied. The price was higher than other places, but your item had good reviews and I liked going with a Mac specialist. We especially appreciate how easy you made it, with the extras beyond the drive itself: enclosure, tools, video, and other online instructions.

Rating: 5/5 The whole process went off without a hitch! July 14, 2016 I am amazed how this whole process went off without a hitch. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy my hard drive which is full (error messages to that effect). It took about 12 hours to copy the 248gigs of data to the new 480SSD. I chose the option where the new drive was outside in the usb box. When it finished the copy process I booted from the USB drive, the SSD clone and that worked fine so I installed the drive and my new ram at the same time. And it was perfect! No problems at all. I am very satisfied with the product and especially the videos that I watched and followed precisely. I'm very happy!

Rating: 5/5 Words are not enough July 11, 2016 I am extremely happy with my purchase. It arrived on good time, and it was a great upgrade to my mac. I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch non-retina from mid 2012. It was not the most powerful machine and it was starting to slow down 'cause of all he new features being added to mac os x. But with this SSD upgrade plus a little RAM upgrade too, the machine flies now. Boot up time was reduced from 1 minute 25 seconds to only 17 seconds. Apps open instantly, everything feels smoother and the mac feels lighter in weight as well.

The external HD enclosure is super light and works great too. And it looks just like an accessory made specifically for the Mac.

Rating: 5/5 Awesome experience, all worked flawlessly July 9, 2016 I bought an OWC 240GB Mercury SSD as replacement for the HDD of my MacBookPro. I did all the work using only my MacBook and the contents of the box OWC sent me. All worked like a clockwork: the shipping, box, components, tools, manuals, instruction videos, I am very, very impressed, highly recommended. Now the laptop works faster, like one order of magnitud, no overheating, no fan noise and the old HDD is my backup external disk. Now I am working on installing more RAM memory using their kit.

Rating: 4/5 Very good product. July 5, 2016 I am new to using Macs. Purchased my late 2008 MacBook Pro in early 2016 and upgraded the RAM from 4 GB to 8GB. Then I ordered an SSD HD that boosted storage from 250 GB to 480GB. OWC articles on these upgrade were excellent resource. My only issue with the order was in the long wait for delivery to Canada. I know next time to use a courier rather than USPS/Canada Post.

Rating: 3/5 SSD Drive for 17" MacBook Pro June 27, 2016 It seems to work now that I have installed my second one. My first one installed fine and after about one hour it failed and I could not recover it. My MacBook is an older model and it takes a lot of work to disassemble to remove the drive and doing it twice wasn't what I was looking forward to. It also required me to take it out and return it before they would send me another drive rendering my laptop useless of about aa week. Not happy about that either.
