Upgrade/Replace your internal drive
The Drive and Tools you need to Upgrade/Replace the existing 2.5" Drive in your laptop, Mac mini, Xbox, PS3, etc + make the drive being replaced an External for data transfer, backup, and/or additional portable storage.

Everything you need in one package, immediately ready to assemble and:
  • Backup and store your data with style and confidence.
  • Take your data with you - small enough to keep in a pocket!
  • Easily add additional laptop storage with no AC adapter required.
Examples of how this bus-powered Express bundle can be used in real world situations:

Power Users / Travelers: Relocate your "home folder" to your Express and have your files with you at home, at work or on the road without the need to synchronize your machines.

Laptop Owners: Clone your current internal SATA hard drive in your laptop to the new drive. Then install the new, larger drive in your laptop and keep the smaller drive in your Express for additional storage space.

iTunes Aficionados: Keep a copy of your iTunes library on your external drive to play on multiple machines.

Gamers: Add additional storage to your XBox 360 or PS3 game console to store music, media, and other downloads. PS3 even includes a backup utility to protect your internal drive's data.

For Everyone: Have the piece of mind of a complete backup plan. Create a bootable clone of your hard drive at regular intervals so if your computer goes down, your productivity doesn't go down with it. Boot to another computer and keep on working!

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 The Speed! April 7, 2017 After carefully selecting the correct product to match the model and capabilities of my Mac, the upgrade to this SSD improved the speed of my machine 10 fold. The service was streamlined and wonderful. My product arrived a day before expected. The instructional video was all I needed to complete the repair in about 15 minutes. I would highly recommend OWC products to anyone looking to upgrade their machine.

Rating: 5/5 Much better than original March 27, 2017 Not only did the new OWC drive for my MacBook Pro 9,2 make boot-up much , much faster, but a problem of not waking from sleep when attached to my Apple ThunderBolt display ended. Love the new drive. Installation was very easy as was data migration. Too soon to assess durability.

Rating: 5/5 SSD is the way to go!!! March 20, 2017 I replaced the HDD in my old MacBook Pro with an SSD, and it's like a brand new machine!!! The installation process was well documented and explained by one of your videos, and was very easy to follow.

Now that the SSD has been installed, and loaded with my data and MacOS, things are MUCH SPEEDIER on the old MacBook. It's incredible!!! Booting up from a power off state dropped from about 45 sec down to 12-13 sec, and that's difficult to believe. Wake up times are faster. And everyday tasks are much faster.

The only difficulty I had was removing one stubborn screw from the back of the MacBook. I had to get help from an Apple Authorized Service Provider to get that booger loose! Otherwise, the removal of the old HDD and installation of the new SSD was as smooth as glass.

Rating: 5/5 A Great & Easy Upgrade March 17, 2017 My Mid-2012 Macbook Pro 13" was getting slower and slower with each operating system and software upgrade. The drive cloning I did overnight so I cannot say how long that took. The installation of the drive took about 20 minutes - the computer now boots quickly and all software is FAR MORE responsive!

Rating: 5/5 I like extra capacity hard drive March 10, 2017 I've been wanting to update to a SSD hard drive with a larger capacity for some time now. The cost was reasonable and installing the new SSD in my MacBook Pro was simple and straightforward. If I had a complaint, it would be the lack of information provided regarding transferring data from the old drive to the new one. I realize many of OWC's customers are much more capable with the tech than am I, but I found myself totally stumped. Luckily, my son lives only two hours away and was able to do the data transfer for me.

Rating: 5/5 Added both RAM and SSDs. March 9, 2017 I have two early MBPs, one a 15" (4 GBs RAM, 750 GBs spinning disk) and the other a 17" (8 GBs RAM, 750 GBs spinning disk). They are both getting more use than before so the spinning beach ball was starting to become more than just a nuisance. With heavier use, it was annoying and frustrating. More RAM or an SSD? Why not both? The MBPs are getting long in the tooth but serve our intended purposes quite well. So I bought both, 16 GBs RAM and 480 GBs SSDs for each.

The RAM and SSD installs were easy and straightforward by following the install videos available on the OWC site. I also bought the SSD kits that included a USB2 external case for each of the old drives because this was only a few dollars more and I keep them attached to their respective Macs for additional, redundant and portable Time Machine backups.

Each kit also included a few cheapy screw drivers and a handy spudger to aid in the install of the SSDs and RAM.

Rating: 5/5 Awesome March 3, 2017 Great upgrade.... high quality product with fast delivery. I have had this on my computer for 3 weeks now and it's running perfectly. This was an upgrade from and old "moving parts" hard drive... wow what a difference.

Rating: 5/5 WOW what a huge difference! February 28, 2017 I purchased a new MacBookPro Touchbar over Christmas. I LOVE that machine, but I quickly realized just how slow my current 2011 MacBook Pro was. It was a i7 2.8 GHZ machine. By upgrading the memory from 4 GIG to 16 GIG and installing the 500 GIG SSD hard drive, it made the old machine also as fast as the new machine. If I would have done these upgrades first, I would have not bought the new Mac. WOW,, what a difference and very easy upgrade to do. Followed the step by step videos with NO problems.

Rating: 5/5 My 2011 Macbook is like new. February 15, 2017 I upgraded to an SSD from a HDD, and I was blown away by the difference. I was definitely nervous to replace my hard drive because I had never even opened my computer before, but with the help of MacSales' instruction videos, it was relatively easy. I only had one problem with migration (which wasn't MacSales' fault), which was that for whatever reason I wasn't allowed access to installing the latest OS on the new drive, which I fixed oddly by manually setting the date and time through Terminal. Otherwise everything switched over without incident, and my bootup time went from 2-3 minutes to about 20-30 seconds, and before applications would bounce in the dock for around 10 seconds pre-launch, and now the window opens and loads instantaneously. If you're looking to give your Mac an extra boost, this (and some more RAM if you haven't already installed it to the max) will do the trick.

The addition of a case for your old hard drive is very handy, and I now use it for backups. And on top of that you get all the screwdrivers you'll ever need for computer stuff. The whole kit is pretty slick, and I couldn't recommend it enough.

Rating: 5/5 The best SSDs and enclosures around. February 14, 2017 I recently purchased a 1 TB 6GHz SSD to upgrade my MacBook Pro to a larger drive. The performance of the drive is terrific I also purchased a USB3 portable enclosure for the drive I removed. Installation of the drive in it was a snap also. I am completely pleased with this purchase.

Rating: 5/5 Saved myself money!! February 5, 2017 Hubby has a 2012 Macbook Pro (with CD/DVD player); he kept complaining about it being so slow and after seeing the new models don't have the CD drives I started doing research. He uses this feature to burn music CDs and download music from friends CDs as well. After reading about the SSD drives being better I happened on a video of the installation process and figured "I can do that!". Then I found this website and their videos and decided to order. I followed their video and had no issues installing myself (I am 57 and have never opened a laptop computer in my life). I also decided to install a new battery while I was at it. All is well and he is happy!

Rating: 5/5 saved my old macpro and now better than new January 4, 2017 My son's macpro 2012 was really struggling. we upgraded RAM to 8, and more importantly changed the slow HD to this SSD. the purchase process was super easy, arrived on time, and installation was very easy with the kit. i especially appreciated both the hardware and software instructions on your website. it runs like a brand new machine--like my recent macpro retina in terms of performance, so i really feel that for less than 200 (SSD plus RAM) dollars, we got a brand new high performing macpro. thanks guys.

Rating: 5/5 Amazing performence December 28, 2016 The performance of my Mac Mini has increased noticeably since I installed the SSD, I actually went as far as to buy a "new" Mac Mini (late 2014) but was so amazed by its poor performance that I decided to keep my good ole 2011 Mac Mini with an upgraded RAM (which you can't do on the latest Mac Mini). Mind you, this SSD upgrade procedure is not for the faint at heart but it's totally worth it, the machine starts in 20 second and apps launch is a split second! its just like getting a new Mac for a fraction of the price!
