Upgrade/Replace your internal drive
The Drive and Tools you need to Upgrade/Replace the existing 2.5" Drive in your laptop, Mac mini, Xbox, PS3, etc + make the drive being replaced an External for data transfer, backup, and/or additional portable storage.

Everything you need in one package, immediately ready to assemble and:
  • Backup and store your data with style and confidence.
  • Take your data with you - small enough to keep in a pocket!
  • Easily add additional laptop storage with no AC adapter required.
Examples of how this bus-powered Express bundle can be used in real world situations:

Power Users / Travelers: Relocate your "home folder" to your Express and have your files with you at home, at work or on the road without the need to synchronize your machines.

Laptop Owners: Clone your current internal SATA hard drive in your laptop to the new drive. Then install the new, larger drive in your laptop and keep the smaller drive in your Express for additional storage space.

iTunes Aficionados: Keep a copy of your iTunes library on your external drive to play on multiple machines.

Gamers: Add additional storage to your XBox 360 or PS3 game console to store music, media, and other downloads. PS3 even includes a backup utility to protect your internal drive's data.

For Everyone: Have the piece of mind of a complete backup plan. Create a bootable clone of your hard drive at regular intervals so if your computer goes down, your productivity doesn't go down with it. Boot to another computer and keep on working!

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 I like extra capacity hard drive March 10, 2017 I've been wanting to update to a SSD hard drive with a larger capacity for some time now. The cost was reasonable and installing the new SSD in my MacBook Pro was simple and straightforward. If I had a complaint, it would be the lack of information provided regarding transferring data from the old drive to the new one. I realize many of OWC's customers are much more capable with the tech than am I, but I found myself totally stumped. Luckily, my son lives only two hours away and was able to do the data transfer for me.

Rating: 5/5 Added both RAM and SSDs. March 9, 2017 I have two early MBPs, one a 15" (4 GBs RAM, 750 GBs spinning disk) and the other a 17" (8 GBs RAM, 750 GBs spinning disk). They are both getting more use than before so the spinning beach ball was starting to become more than just a nuisance. With heavier use, it was annoying and frustrating. More RAM or an SSD? Why not both? The MBPs are getting long in the tooth but serve our intended purposes quite well. So I bought both, 16 GBs RAM and 480 GBs SSDs for each.

The RAM and SSD installs were easy and straightforward by following the install videos available on the OWC site. I also bought the SSD kits that included a USB2 external case for each of the old drives because this was only a few dollars more and I keep them attached to their respective Macs for additional, redundant and portable Time Machine backups.

Each kit also included a few cheapy screw drivers and a handy spudger to aid in the install of the SSDs and RAM.

Rating: 5/5 WOW what a huge difference! February 28, 2017 I purchased a new MacBookPro Touchbar over Christmas. I LOVE that machine, but I quickly realized just how slow my current 2011 MacBook Pro was. It was a i7 2.8 GHZ machine. By upgrading the memory from 4 GIG to 16 GIG and installing the 500 GIG SSD hard drive, it made the old machine also as fast as the new machine. If I would have done these upgrades first, I would have not bought the new Mac. WOW,, what a difference and very easy upgrade to do. Followed the step by step videos with NO problems.

Rating: 5/5 My 2011 Macbook is like new. February 15, 2017 I upgraded to an SSD from a HDD, and I was blown away by the difference. I was definitely nervous to replace my hard drive because I had never even opened my computer before, but with the help of MacSales' instruction videos, it was relatively easy. I only had one problem with migration (which wasn't MacSales' fault), which was that for whatever reason I wasn't allowed access to installing the latest OS on the new drive, which I fixed oddly by manually setting the date and time through Terminal. Otherwise everything switched over without incident, and my bootup time went from 2-3 minutes to about 20-30 seconds, and before applications would bounce in the dock for around 10 seconds pre-launch, and now the window opens and loads instantaneously. If you're looking to give your Mac an extra boost, this (and some more RAM if you haven't already installed it to the max) will do the trick.

The addition of a case for your old hard drive is very handy, and I now use it for backups. And on top of that you get all the screwdrivers you'll ever need for computer stuff. The whole kit is pretty slick, and I couldn't recommend it enough.

Rating: 5/5 Macbook Pro 13 early 2011 January 31, 2017 Brought back my Macbook 13 earlt 2011 to life. Very easy to install, approximately 20 minutes, and it's done. You do not have to be a rocket-scientist. The service level at OWC is excellent.

Rating: 5/5 Just Ordered my 3rd Mercury Electra 6G SSD December 16, 2016 A couple of years ago I ordered the 240 GB Mercury Electra 6G SSD for my MBP. I absolutely loved having an SSD drive, until I ran out of space. I then bought another SSD and doubled the size by ordering 480 GB Mercury Electra 6G SSD. I have now run out of space again and just bought the one TB Mercury Electra 6G SSD. I have not had a single issue with any of the drives. I installed each of the drives and the data doubler all without encountering a single issue or hick up. The installation instructions and video are thorough and complete. You can't go wrong buying one of these drives, Just make sure it's big enough.

Rating: 5/5 Delighted! November 18, 2016 I replaced Apple's slow, laptop-quality hard drive in my 2012 Mac mini with this 480GB Electra 6G SSD. Following OWC's video and using tools they supplied, the exchange went without a hitch.

The result is a delight. Reads are now six times faster and writes three times faster. Even backups to an external hard drive are now twice as fast. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to give new life to their old Mac.

The price was great too. That hard drive was four years old and, I suspect, not long for this world. Replacing it before it died meant less hassle. Having decided to replace it, doing so with a much faster SSD was an easy choice.

Rating: 5/5 Old MacBook Pro now runs like new November 17, 2016 Replaced the 500 GB hard drive on my early 2011 MacBook Pro. Very easy with the supplied tools and online video instructions. Upgraded to OS X Sierra at same time as new install then ported all apps and data with Migration Assistant. Worked like a charm. Now laptop is quick and snappy. Re-boots in 1/10 the time. Very pleased!

Rating: 5/5 Easy install and it works as advertised November 8, 2016 My MacBook Pro has been getting slower by the year. It is a 2011 13". It took me about 20 minutes to replace the hard drive with the SSD and as soon as I booted up - wow. My MacBook is literally hundreds of times faster - booting up now takes about 20 seconds instead of the 5-6 minutes it took with the old hard drive. Programs run faster, files are found quickly - awesome.

I was thinking of buying a new MacBook but new ones start at $1700. For under $250 I now have the performance of new Mac. This is the way to go.

Rating: 5/5 Better than new November 3, 2016 2011 MacBook just had logic board replaced by Apple due to video card failure (model known for issue). Once I got it back I upgraded to the SDD drive and replaced the battery. Replaced my ram. Total cost of upgrades under $400. The machine performs incredibly well. No more dock bouncing when launching apps. Startup is less than 30 seconds. Unbelievable difference.

Rating: 5/5 Mind officially blown November 3, 2016 I installed this kit into an iMac, late 2013. Since purchasing the iMac, I've felt that the stock hard drive was either ridiculously slow or defective. Open iMovie? Go grab a cup of coffee. Open Photos? Take a nap. I was kicking myself that I didn't upgrade the drive to either the Fusion or the flash storage. But the flash storage was only a 256GB drive. I would have had to juggle where I would have put all of my stuff. Enter the Mercury Electra SSD. I'll skip right to the chase. WOW. I shouldn't have to say any more, but I will. iMovie and Photos jumped open and were instantly ready to go. Good grief. This is how computers are supposed to work. The iMac now feels like a much stronger machine, possibly because it is a strong machine and just needed the proper drive to match its speed. Now, the installation. For the most part, the install went through without any major glitches. There are a couple of caveats though. The first came when I went to lift the screen off of the base. It would go as easy as the video showed. There is an adhesive at the bottom of the screen that prevented an easy pull off. I think the video should address that. Second, the SATA cable on my drive was one piece vs the two piece one shown in the video. Mine also was not as easy to remove as there wasn't much play to lift the drive. Taking the SATA connector off was much easier than putting it back on the new SSD drive. I felt like my fingers has swelled or had all turned to thumbs. When I did finally get it lined up, it slid right on. Also, the rubber sleeve on the drive that is shown in the video was different than mine. The video showed a one piece unit whereas mine was 2 pieces that were pretty much held in place by the adhesive on the sides. Everything else in the video was spot on and easy to follow. So now I have an iMac that is the workhorse I had hoped it would be.Thank you OWC.

Rating: 4/5 Great kit - Easy to install October 26, 2016 Perfect kit to revamp my 2011 MBP. Instead of changing the computer, always go for a SSD upgrade first when computer feels slow. I have added 8 GB of RAM and the combo was perfect. Now my MBP is back to normal speed. Boot and closing is life changing.

Rating: 4/5 I love my ssd drive but you should dismiss USB 2 inclosure October 15, 2016 You can never realize how fast a computer can be with a ssd drive until you install one! I just regret I didn't check for USB version on the inclosure. I got an USB 2.... what's the use today for usb2? Doesn't make sense. Next time I'll double check.

Rating: 5/5 A MUST purchase upgrade, no exceptions! August 18, 2016 The SSD put life back into my 15" 2011 MBP. I had already replaced the original HD with a 750GB 7200rpm drive a few years ago, however boot time and the overall speed of the computer was getting really annoying. After installing this SSD drive and cloning back my setup, the computer feels like a completely different machine! Boot time is almost as fast as my nephew's 2016 MBP and programs are MUCH (MUCH) faster! Well worth the money, no question about it.

Rating: 5/5 It is alive!! August 5, 2016 My MacBook Pro 8,1 was seriously in a death spiral. HDD becoming unreliable, battery almost completely dead. Got the 480 GB SSD and kit, plus a NewerTech 65WH battery, and the same MacBook Pro is truly like new. Loving the speed of boot-up; no longer waiting on the spinning wheel of death. Installation was super easy and got it all done in 30 minutes -- including the new battery. The videos provided are great and I was able to follow them on mute ;-) Just remember: if you also installed a new battery, don't plug in the battery until after you have installed the SSD. That'll save you from having to pry off the battery connector a second time. Watch both videos before doing anything to understand the best order of operations. Super simple, in any event. Now my iPad might get a little dusty...

Rating: 5/5 An easy and worthwhile upgrade. July 29, 2016 I ordered this kit and additional RAM to upgrade my aging MacBook Pro. Viewing the OWC videos on the installation process gave me the info needed to make the installation go easily and quickly. I cloned the MacBook Pro stock drive to the new SSD before starting the installation. Then I put the SSD and the new RAM into the MacBook Pro and the stock HD into the new enclosure; all worked just fine on the first start up. All told, the upgrade took about one half an hour from start to boot-up.

My experience with all of the items that I've ordered from OWC has been outstanding. Quality products, reasonable prices and great service.
