Upgrade/Replace your internal drive
The Drive and Tools you need to Upgrade/Replace the existing 2.5" Drive in your laptop, Mac mini, Xbox, PS3, etc + make the drive being replaced an External for data transfer, backup, and/or additional portable storage.

Everything you need in one package, immediately ready to assemble and:
  • Backup and store your data with style and confidence.
  • Take your data with you - small enough to keep in a pocket!
  • Easily add additional laptop storage with no AC adapter required.
Examples of how this bus-powered Express bundle can be used in real world situations:

Power Users / Travelers: Relocate your "home folder" to your Express and have your files with you at home, at work or on the road without the need to synchronize your machines.

Laptop Owners: Clone your current internal SATA hard drive in your laptop to the new drive. Then install the new, larger drive in your laptop and keep the smaller drive in your Express for additional storage space.

iTunes Aficionados: Keep a copy of your iTunes library on your external drive to play on multiple machines.

Gamers: Add additional storage to your XBox 360 or PS3 game console to store music, media, and other downloads. PS3 even includes a backup utility to protect your internal drive's data.

For Everyone: Have the piece of mind of a complete backup plan. Create a bootable clone of your hard drive at regular intervals so if your computer goes down, your productivity doesn't go down with it. Boot to another computer and keep on working!

The Mercury Electra 3G SSD is the OWC recommended upgrade option for the Macs listed in the special note above.

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 The whole process went off without a hitch! July 14, 2016 I am amazed how this whole process went off without a hitch. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy my hard drive which is full (error messages to that effect). It took about 12 hours to copy the 248gigs of data to the new 480SSD. I chose the option where the new drive was outside in the usb box. When it finished the copy process I booted from the USB drive, the SSD clone and that worked fine so I installed the drive and my new ram at the same time. And it was perfect! No problems at all. I am very satisfied with the product and especially the videos that I watched and followed precisely. I'm very happy!

Rating: 5/5 OWC = the best! July 12, 2016 Although I had to return this item, OWC, in their inimitable way made this as simple as could be. No questions asked, just complete customer satisfaction. This is the reason I've been buying from OWC for as long as I can remember, and will continue to do so, as well as recommend OWC to others!

Rating: 5/5 Words are not enough July 11, 2016 I am extremely happy with my purchase. It arrived on good time, and it was a great upgrade to my mac. I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch non-retina from mid 2012. It was not the most powerful machine and it was starting to slow down 'cause of all he new features being added to mac os x. But with this SSD upgrade plus a little RAM upgrade too, the machine flies now. Boot up time was reduced from 1 minute 25 seconds to only 17 seconds. Apps open instantly, everything feels smoother and the mac feels lighter in weight as well.

The external HD enclosure is super light and works great too. And it looks just like an accessory made specifically for the Mac.

Rating: 5/5 Awesome experience, all worked flawlessly July 9, 2016 I bought an OWC 240GB Mercury SSD as replacement for the HDD of my MacBookPro. I did all the work using only my MacBook and the contents of the box OWC sent me. All worked like a clockwork: the shipping, box, components, tools, manuals, instruction videos, I am very, very impressed, highly recommended. Now the laptop works faster, like one order of magnitud, no overheating, no fan noise and the old HDD is my backup external disk. Now I am working on installing more RAM memory using their kit.

Rating: 4/5 SSD working well July 6, 2016 Definite speed upgrade. Easy to switch using CCC. I have been satisfied with previous tool sets. This tool set not as good as the magnetic properties were very weak making it difficult to remove/reset the screws.

Rating: 4/5 Very good product. July 5, 2016 I am new to using Macs. Purchased my late 2008 MacBook Pro in early 2016 and upgraded the RAM from 4 GB to 8GB. Then I ordered an SSD HD that boosted storage from 250 GB to 480GB. OWC articles on these upgrade were excellent resource. My only issue with the order was in the long wait for delivery to Canada. I know next time to use a courier rather than USPS/Canada Post.

Rating: 3/5 SSD Drive for 17" MacBook Pro June 27, 2016 It seems to work now that I have installed my second one. My first one installed fine and after about one hour it failed and I could not recover it. My MacBook is an older model and it takes a lot of work to disassemble to remove the drive and doing it twice wasn't what I was looking forward to. It also required me to take it out and return it before they would send me another drive rendering my laptop useless of about aa week. Not happy about that either.

I knew that my HDD in my 2012 Macbook was in desperate need, but I did not expect such a revolution in ALL of my programs. It even seems like my internet speed is now three times as fast when using Safari.

My start up time went from 188 seconds to 32 seconds. The Adobe suite is running great. I am tackling projects that I would not have attempted previously.

The only problem I had with installation was some of the screws were in too tight for the small screw driver that came in the installation combo. I had to use a larger screw driver for better grip to remove 2 difficult screws.

Rating: 5/5 Huge Improvement June 27, 2016 Once installed it was night and day. It was night and day. Prior to install boot time was 1:23, after install it was :18. Only quibble is the date has to readjusted via the terminal prior to installing the OS.

Rating: 5/5 SSD kit and USB 3 Enclosure works as expected. June 25, 2016 Installing the Solid State Drive was easy. The instructions on the OWC web site were clear about how to do install the SSD and how to put together the USB 3 enclosure. Both are working smoothly.

Rating: 5/5 Great experience! June 20, 2016 I rarely review anything, but this one needs to be shared. This is my second hard drive purchase from OWC and both have been perfect. I recently replaced a 4 y/o 750GB hd with a 1TB SSD and all I can say is WOW! What a difference. My MBP has 8GB of RAM (Max allowable) which runs at max capacity all the time. When I changed to the SSD, the performance increase was amazing. I used Carbon Copy Cloner 2 which worked flawlessly. I cloned the hd overnight and swapped the hd's the next morning. It has worked flawlessly since. I wish all computer upgrades were this simple. Thanks to all involved!

Rating: 5/5 Really fast, and a cinch to install June 16, 2016 I wanted to upgrade a 2009 MacBook Pro 13" for speed and capacity. This 480 gb SSD drive fit the bill perfectly: really easy to install (using OWC's online videos), and I put the original internal drive into the OWC drive enclosure kit as an extra external backup destination. No problems at all so far: the MBP starts up really quickly, and the large capacity is really welcome.

Rating: 5/5 SSD Upgrade to MacBook Pro June 16, 2016 This was an upgrade of the original HHD in my wife's notebook. Installation was a breeze using the included enclosure which I highly recommend as it makes both the upgrade much simplier and allow use of the HHD as an external USB drive. Great on-line support videos at OWC.

Rating: 5/5 A worthwhile 20 minute upgrade June 10, 2016 The 15" MacBook Pro (MBP) I am presently using to write this review once had a conventional 240GB HDD installed in it. The 240GB HDD was a standard fitment. I use the MBP for many hours each day and the HDD slowly began to fill up. I found myself with less and less HDD space until my MBP started to generate warning messages indicating that I had <10% HDD space available. These messages became annoying.

The obvious solution was to install a higher capacity HDD. 480GB/500GB were my most cost effective options. However, with falling SSD prices I decided not only to double the capacity of my internal drive but also go solid-state (SSD) and increase the overall performance of my MBP. It should be quieter and use less power too.

A 240GB HDD is much too valuable to just throw away so I purchased a USB 2.0 enclosure from OWC and created a new 240GB external HDD. The kit included the necessary tools to assist me with the upgrade, which I performed in around 20 minutes after I had familiarised myself with the upgrade procedure by viewing the appropriate OWC video. I have previously performed similar upgrades so knew what steps were required.

I encountered no problems whatsoever and the frequent warning messages I was receiving ceased immediately. I am now using about 50% of the SSDs capacity.

I kept the HDD, now with a USB 2.0 interface, as a backup because it contains a complete and working copy of El Capitan upon it.

I have not regretted the upgrade for one minute and I would recommend it to anyone who has found themselves running low on HDD capacity.

Rating: 5/5 My Macbook Pro is Super Fast June 8, 2016 It works fine and its super fast. Here’s some additional install information that I needed to do (I consider myself a semi-nerd Mac/PC person: The instructions need updating for Early 2011 Macbook Pro. I followed them to the letter, then twice more with minor variances and each time (after the long file restore) I re-booted I’d get the blank gray screen with a spinning gray wheel. After a bit of Google searching I then performed: Control-R Boot; Erased the SSD; then skipped the OS install and went directly to the Time Machine file transfer. All is well!! It seems the OS load via the instructions sets the OS to what it was when the Mac new in 2011, then the file transfers to (El Capitan) present day OSX didn’t want to play.

Rating: 5/5 Easy to install, works great! June 6, 2016 The installation was very easy to follow with the provided videos. I did run into some issues when trying to install the OS with the instructions provided using the recovery disc mode, which kept erroring out. I called support and they were very helpful in providing an alternate route for OS installation and were very patient through the somewhat long process. My late 2011 MacBook Pro has new life and the new drive is working great, so much faster! It's only been a couple of weeks, but I'm confident.
