Includes a 2.5" drive, enclosure, and toolkit to upgrade/replace the internal drive in your Mac.
Upgrade/Replace your internal drive
The Drive and Tools you need to Upgrade/Replace the existing 2.5" Drive in your laptop, Mac mini, Xbox, PS3, etc + make the drive being replaced an External for data transfer, backup, and/or additional portable storage.

Everything you need in one package, immediately ready to assemble and:
  • Backup and store your data with style and confidence.
  • Take your data with you - small enough to keep in a pocket!
  • Easily add additional laptop storage with no AC adapter required.
Examples of how this bus-powered Express bundle can be used in real world situations:

Power Users / Travelers: Relocate your "home folder" to your Express and have your files with you at home, at work or on the road without the need to synchronize your machines.

Laptop Owners: Clone your current internal SATA hard drive in your laptop to the new drive. Then install the new, larger drive in your laptop and keep the smaller drive in your Express for additional storage space.

iTunes Aficionados: Keep a copy of your iTunes library on your external drive to play on multiple machines.

Gamers: Add additional storage to your XBox 360 or PS3 game console to store music, media, and other downloads. PS3 even includes a backup utility to protect your internal drive's data.

For Everyone: Have the piece of mind of a complete backup plan. Create a bootable clone of your hard drive at regular intervals so if your computer goes down, your productivity doesn't go down with it. Boot to another computer and keep on working!

While a 6G SSD does function, it will only do so at SATA Revision 1.0 (1.5Gb/s, 150MB/s) speeds rather that the SATA Revision 2.0 (3.0Gb/s 300MB/s) speed the computer can deliver.
The Mercury Electra 3G SSD is the OWC recommended upgrade option for the Macs listed in the special note above.

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 A Brand New MacBook Pro 2011 at 1/4 the Cost! December 27, 2016 My 500 GB spinning drive just couldn't handle the new job where I now need to run Parallels for their Windows world constantly. Not to mention all the photos and music that were filling the drive. I also upgraded the RAM from 8GB to 16, but the real performance shocker is the SSD. Wow. Does this baby boot up FAST and it can handle all that computing power so much better and faster now. I can't afford a new computer just yet, and, I get to keep my optical drive. 2-thumbs up, you won't be disappointed.

Rating: 5/5 Easy installation, great performance December 1, 2016 This SSD was easy to install on my late 2011 MBP and performance improved dramatically. Apps open and close much faster as do boot up and shut down. I used Time Machine to restore my system and it too was very easy. The tools included in the kit are serviceable but not very high quality. I used my own tools.

The video was so easy to follow making the install easy too. This might be a good time to change the background music, I remember it from years ago. :)

Rating: 5/5 Huge Improvement June 27, 2016 Once installed it was night and day. It was night and day. Prior to install boot time was 1:23, after install it was :18. Only quibble is the date has to readjusted via the terminal prior to installing the OS.

Rating: 5/5 My Macbook Pro is Super Fast June 8, 2016 It works fine and its super fast. Here’s some additional install information that I needed to do (I consider myself a semi-nerd Mac/PC person: The instructions need updating for Early 2011 Macbook Pro. I followed them to the letter, then twice more with minor variances and each time (after the long file restore) I re-booted I’d get the blank gray screen with a spinning gray wheel. After a bit of Google searching I then performed: Control-R Boot; Erased the SSD; then skipped the OS install and went directly to the Time Machine file transfer. All is well!! It seems the OS load via the instructions sets the OS to what it was when the Mac new in 2011, then the file transfers to (El Capitan) present day OSX didn’t want to play.

Rating: 5/5 Easy to install, works great! June 6, 2016 The installation was very easy to follow with the provided videos. I did run into some issues when trying to install the OS with the instructions provided using the recovery disc mode, which kept erroring out. I called support and they were very helpful in providing an alternate route for OS installation and were very patient through the somewhat long process. My late 2011 MacBook Pro has new life and the new drive is working great, so much faster! It's only been a couple of weeks, but I'm confident.

Rating: 5/5 SuperFast Extreme Pro 6G September 14, 2015 Dear all viewers, I bought this product online called Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD and replace with my old hard drive in my Mac. i was supposed to buy new mac just because of its slower on and off. It was taking 90-120 seconds to turn it on before but after installing this it will take 19 seconds and 3 seconds to shut off. Amazing product After installing this product, I love my mac and i think i saved $1000 from buy a new one.

Rating: 5/5 Exactly as described November 13, 2014 Shipped fast, arrived early, took me an hour to install and copy my content over. Using the external casing, I was able to easily migrate my settings and bonus, I have a new external drive to tote around!

Rating: 5/5 Works As Advertised August 30, 2013 They aren't lying, my computer boots in 15 seconds now instead of 50. Opening large files and launching applications such as word and anything else large at all is much quicker. Battery even lasts a bit longer. Enclosure works good as well, was able to clone 50GB of hard drive in about 40 minutes using Carbon Copy Cloner, and now I have a backup disk. Xbench benchmark disk test scored 65.06 on the HDD, and scored 480.49 with the SSD. It's 300 bucks to upgrade the Mac hard drive directly from Apple anyways, so this is a pretty good deal.

Rating: 5/5 Flawless!! March 14, 2013 Just like the last two purchases I made from OWC, this kit worked perfectly. Everything was included in the kit to copy my files to the new drive and then install it inside my MacBook Pro laptop. No instructions were included, so you need to watch the videos OWC has online. They showed me everything I needed to know. Will continue ordering with them. Their products are excellent.

Rating: 5/5 MBP Upgrade to SSD January 13, 2013 Received my 480GB SSD shipped to NZ very quickly and it was Xmas time too. Putting it into my early 2011 MacBook Pro was a breeze with the tiny but perfectly matched toolkit and with the 6G Mercury SSD and new OWC ram fitted, my laptop is now much much faster compared when it had a 7200rpm HD. Startup is under 30 secs compared with 1.5 - 2 mins and apps are almost instant. Should it get trashed in an earthquake like most of my computers have here in Christchurch, I expect my data will be safe, even if the computers get trashed. For me a better and cheaper alternative to a retina model. Thanks!!

Rating: 5/5 Super fast for Mac Mini September 20, 2012 Bought my wife a new 2012 mac mini to replace her aging power mac ( G5 )

Wanted the best performance from the Power mac which was running a WD Velociaptor drive internally.

Went with the extreme Pro ssd because the mini will support it full speed.

This drive is very, very fast.

Should have sent to mini to OWC and had them install the original drive also. Found out to late. Next time

It was simple to install and transfer my data. Now my Macbook Pro kicks a**!! The video demo does not do justice for the performance. If you are looking for an SSD...stop looking and purchase this drive.
