Upgrade/Replace your internal drive
The Drive and Tools you need to Upgrade/Replace the existing 2.5" Drive in your laptop, Mac mini, Xbox, PS3, etc + make the drive being replaced an External for data transfer, backup, and/or additional portable storage.

Everything you need in one package, immediately ready to assemble and:
  • Backup and store your data with style and confidence.
  • Take your data with you - small enough to keep in a pocket!
  • Easily add additional laptop storage with no AC adapter required.
Examples of how this bus-powered Express bundle can be used in real world situations:

Power Users / Travelers: Relocate your "home folder" to your Express and have your files with you at home, at work or on the road without the need to synchronize your machines.

Laptop Owners: Clone your current internal SATA hard drive in your laptop to the new drive. Then install the new, larger drive in your laptop and keep the smaller drive in your Express for additional storage space.

iTunes Aficionados: Keep a copy of your iTunes library on your external drive to play on multiple machines.

Gamers: Add additional storage to your XBox 360 or PS3 game console to store music, media, and other downloads. PS3 even includes a backup utility to protect your internal drive's data.

For Everyone: Have the piece of mind of a complete backup plan. Create a bootable clone of your hard drive at regular intervals so if your computer goes down, your productivity doesn't go down with it. Boot to another computer and keep on working!

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 Installation April 12, 2018 Replacing your hard drive on my MacBook Pro couldnt have been any easier with the online videos from Macsales, they take you every step of the way and even tell you according to your computer what parts to buy. Now my new hard drive works perfectly, startup time is so fast. I would highly recommend Macsales to all anyone needing to do an upgrade.

Rating: 5/5 Fantastic! March 14, 2018 I bought this to help refurb an old MacBook Pro (late 2008) and the difference in speed is unbelievable! It’s like a new machine! I also bought a 4gb ram upgrade on here for the same project, and I couldn’t be happier.

The kit for this (with the tools and enclosure) is well worth the extra cost. I keep the old HDD for backing up my computer and important files, and the tools were exactly what I needed to get the job done. Thanks!!!

Rating: 4/5 Good drive, nice bonus February 18, 2018 I quickly outgrew the 480 GB SSD I was using as a startup on my Mac tower. I cloned it to this 1TB SSD and am using the original as an emergency startup.

The drive case is simple plastic with bus-powered USB2 but as a bundle it was dirt cheap and might come in handy at some point.

Rating: 5/5 Key upgrade for 2010 Mac Mini Server February 10, 2018 Replacing a drive in the mid-2010 Mac Mini server is an undertaking, it was worth it.I only removed the "lower bay" or Disk 1 OEM drive which had failed operationally and according to SMART. I replaced Disk 1 with an OWC 60GB SSD to host primarily the operating system. The video that OWC has on replacing Mac Mini server drives was very good, although I was unable to get the WIFI grill to seat correctly -- but I'm OK with that. Anyway, I installed a new copy of MacOS High Sierra and with APFS, I'm good to go with super quick boot-ups and a far more reliable experience for a content caching server and periodic desktop computer. Thanks again, OWC, for helping to resurrect an ailing, slow Mac.

Rating: 5/5 made my 2008 MacBook Pro pretty fast January 28, 2018 I was told for years that upgrading my old Mac with an SSD would give it new life. And I finally bit the bullet and did the swap. It was great. I highly recommend buying the kit, so you can clone your existing drive into the SSD (when it's in the external enclosure). Highly recommend this method to extend the life (and speed) of your older Macs.

Rating: 5/5 Simple upgrade that will SUPERCHARGE your old MacBook January 25, 2018 I've had my MacBook Pro since 2009 and have always loved it EXCEPT for the SLOOOOOOW bootup and response time. This upgrade changed ALL of that.

BEFORE: 2 min 14 sec to boot. AFTER: 20 seconds.

It also responds a lot faster during general use and I'm seeing better battery life since I don't have a spinning mechanical drive any longer. The upgrade was easy and the OWC instructions and support made it a breeze. So easy even a caveman could do it. Worth every penny.

Rating: 5/5 This'll Kick Your Old Mac Up a Notch or Two! January 21, 2018 This transformed my mid 2009 mac book pro 13" from almost unusable for any photo / video media to relatively blazing (not having the pleasure of working on a recent machine). A couple examples: 1) Prior to the swap, the Photos app on my mac couldn't display a 1000 new images to import from my iPhone, but no problems after installing this SSD. 2) Just opening System Preference would take over 30 sec with old HDD, now takes just a couple. Installation is literally as easy as the OWC video shows. I'm so happy with the experience that I'm buying the equivalent for a mid 2010 mac book pro 13".

Rating: 5/5 Excellent SSD Replacement January 15, 2018 I bought this replacement SSD for my mid-2010 unibody MacBook and it sped things up greatly. The tools and enclosure drive were extremely useful and the instructions were clear. I was able to set up this drive and transfer all my information in only a couple hours.

Rating: 5/5 Revitalized my 17" MacBook Pro!!! January 1, 2018 My MacBook Pro was showing it's age with the original drive and the system was bogging down (original HDD was 512 GB). The replacement drive went in without any problems (the Installation Video was extremely helpful)!!! I would recommend this product to anyone that would like more life out of their MacBook Pro or even if you just want to speed up the system (I travel quite a bit, and the peace of mind that comes with having an SSD is compelling)!!!

Rating: 5/5 Transformed my 2010 MacBook Pro December 14, 2017 For a first-time attempt at doing any "tech" work on a computer, replacing my old hard drive with a 250gb OWC SSD was very successful. It would have been nice to know if it was formatted for Mac OS, but since it wasn't, I got to practice installing twice! Other than that, it has really speeded up things, extending the useful life of my MacBook. I wish now that I had opted for the 500gb drive.

Rating: 5/5 Nice improvement for aging machine! December 8, 2017 Great service for a wonderful product. Seems fairly priced, and my computer is running faster. Updated a mid-2010 MacBook Pro. Easy installation, yet tiresome updating and upgrading, and we're up and running.

Thanks for being so prompt. USPS stalled for a couple of days, but it still came in time to salvage the old drive.

Rating: 5/5 Another Winner from OWC November 15, 2017 I'm a long time customer that has a 2009 13" Unibody MacBook which was so-o-o-o-o slow on start up that Whale feces would have hit bottom before I was up and running. I got the SSD and enclosure kit and I was up and running in 2 hours, complete. Now my start up time is a little over 20 seconds. Thanks again OWC! Another reason why I shop nowhere else for all my Mac needs.

Rating: 5/5 Major increase in performance. October 24, 2017 I bought this kit and replaced the drive in my Mac Mini 3.1. The SSD is so much faster and has made my computer perform a lot better than when it was new. Very quick start up and no more spinning wheel. Very easy to install and was guided by the installation video on this site. I'm also running my old drive in the express USB Enclosure and able to use it as before with El Capitan. Absolutely worth doing!

Rating: 5/5 Significant Improvement in Speed - Easy Install October 24, 2017 Changed out a 7200 RPM hard drive for this SSD.

I watched the OWC video and that made the physical install easy.

Loaded a new OS as suggested, rather than just copy the old one over. Glad I did that.

Re-installed everything. Only watch-out is to make sure you have all the required passwords/numbers etc. to any software that might require them.

Significant speed improvement - I was expecting that but the speed improvement exceeded my expectations.

Rating: 5/5 Like a new & improved machine October 22, 2017 This upgrade made my mid 2010 MacBook Pro 13" much faster than when new. Boot time went from over 2 minutes to 26 seconds. Everything is faster now...much faster. SSD is the way to go. With the kit, I had all the tools needed, plus now I have the original HDD has an external drive with the included enclosure.

Rating: 5/5 Like New Again October 3, 2017 I purchased the SSD 250GB hard drive, and my mid-2010 MacBook Pro is like new again. The instructions were easy to follow with the video, and the assembly kit was very useful. I highly recommend this product. Thanks Mac Sales.

Rating: 5/5 Easy to install and much faster than the old drive. September 29, 2017 This drive has made my Macbook Pro 2009 work even faster than when new. After upgrading the OS to el Capitan everything slowed down. Now, it's like a brand new machine. Well done!

Rating: 5/5 Best upgrade you can get for your Mac September 18, 2017 I have another Mac with an SSD, so I decided that my Mac Mini needed this upgrade as well. Before I couldn't stream YouTube videos. Open a second application, and it took forever. Boot up time, about 2 minutes. Installed this SSD and boy is it fast. Boot up time is now about 45 seconds. Everything works as it should. Should have done this upgrade a while back. , I will warn you, it is not easy to install in a Mac Mini, but if you are computer-savy, or have a friend that is, this is the upgrade for you.

Rating: 5/5 Amazing Product September 14, 2017 Worked like a charm. Super easy to install! All the tools which were needed came with it. Process was less than 2-3 hours. I didn't use the enclosure as I had made a manual backup on different drives. And I also had created a bootable USB with Mac OSX to reinstall after the HDD swap. The computer is now useable, and faster than it was before.

Great product!!
