Upgrade/Replace your internal drive
The Drive and Tools you need to Upgrade/Replace the existing 2.5" Drive in your laptop, Mac mini, Xbox, PS3, etc + make the drive being replaced an External for data transfer, backup, and/or additional portable storage.

Everything you need in one package, immediately ready to assemble and:
  • Backup and store your data with style and confidence.
  • Take your data with you - small enough to keep in a pocket!
  • Easily add additional laptop storage with no AC adapter required.
Examples of how this bus-powered Express bundle can be used in real world situations:

Power Users / Travelers: Relocate your "home folder" to your Express and have your files with you at home, at work or on the road without the need to synchronize your machines.

Laptop Owners: Clone your current internal SATA hard drive in your laptop to the new drive. Then install the new, larger drive in your laptop and keep the smaller drive in your Express for additional storage space.

iTunes Aficionados: Keep a copy of your iTunes library on your external drive to play on multiple machines.

Gamers: Add additional storage to your XBox 360 or PS3 game console to store music, media, and other downloads. PS3 even includes a backup utility to protect your internal drive's data.

For Everyone: Have the piece of mind of a complete backup plan. Create a bootable clone of your hard drive at regular intervals so if your computer goes down, your productivity doesn't go down with it. Boot to another computer and keep on working!

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 Perfect March 31, 2017 I opened the package, followed the site instructions.....overall it took me around 6 hours (including passing back the information from the old slow disk 4h). So it is a relatively fast change, very easy. I had never opened my machine and it was the first time I changed a disk.

As for the new disk...WOW. It feels like a new computer, super fast. You can tell the difference with almost any interaction with it. It is a MUST if you want to keep using it. I can use it now for music production and app development......before that it was pretty much just a music & photo repository.

Rating: 5/5 Drive Replacement March 14, 2017 My 2008 MacBook's internal drive was starting to fail. I found the OWC combination SSD & Express enclosure the quickest and easiest method to replace the original drive. The only step that took the longest time was performing an image copy of the original disk to the SSD ... and it really wasn't that long at all.

Since I wasn't sure if the early 2008 MacBook would work with SSDs, I contacted OWC support first and was guided to the Mercury Electra 3G as a perfect replacement ... and it was! I even ended up doubling the original drive's capacity. Performance of this drive is outstanding. Instantly upping it to perform closer to my 2011 MacBook Pro.

Rating: 5/5 Upgraded a Macbook Pro 13" mid-2009 March 11, 2017 I was somewhat frustrated by Apple's policy of "obsoleting" perfectly usable computers and dead-ending being able to install any supported OS (I.E. Sierra 10.12).

The project was to upgrade a mid-2009 MacBook Pro (2.26 GHz Intel core 2 Duo - MacBookPro 5.5). Installed the OWC 240GB Mercury Electra 3G SSD and 8G memory upgrades. Using a readily software patcher to bypass Apple's restriction on installing Sierra on this model - I successful installed Sierra which runs perfectly on this MacBook and is totally usable for it's intended usage.

I've used OWC/MacSales for various upgrades for at least 15 years and have never been disappointed by their performance and the company's support. Thanks OWC!

Rating: 4/5 SSD is great, but enclosure it not... February 27, 2017 It's my fault for not reading the headline description very closely... but I wouldn't have expected for a SSD drive to be sold with a USB 2.0 enclosure. Yes thats a USB 2.... NOT a USB 3 enclosure. The mismatch in speeds (pairing a SSD with a USB 2 connection) seems dumb. I've bought four SSDs from OWC over the years and love the drives and the customer service! I ended up buying a USB 3 enclosure off of amazon for $10. My recommendation to OWC, don't sell USB 2 enclosures with SSDs.

Rating: 5/5 Everything you need. February 22, 2017 Everything you need to install the SSD drive, bar back-up software. Screwdrivers are adequate, they're not as flimsy as they feel. The enclosure is easy to open/close, and works just fine.

Rating: 5/5 SSD Breathes New Life into Old MacBook Pro February 12, 2017 My wife's 2010 MacBook Pro was constantly restarting spontaneously and was extremely sluggish.

Bought the Electra 3G 1TB SSD kit and had it all installed and data transferred in very little time. The hard drive enclosure made it easy to connect to the new drive and use Migration Assistant to transfer over files with no effort.

It's now like using a brand new machine. It's super fast to boot up and run large programs.

I would definitely recommend upgrading to an SSD drive before shelling out tons more on a new MacBook Pro.

Rating: 5/5 Made my Macbook better than 'like new' February 6, 2017 Had a failing drive in my late 2009 white Macbook. I like the machine, didn't really want to get rid of it, but wasn't sure about throwing any money into a 7 year old computer. Ended up deciding to try putting an SSD into it and see how it went. All I can say is WOW - totally worth it. It was a quick and easy install, and the last "time machine" backup restored without any problems. This old computer now runs better than when it was brand new....boot up time about 15 seconds instead of a minute and a half....apps launch much quicker....just more responsive overall. Well worth the price.

Rating: 5/5 Revived my MacBook! February 5, 2017 My mid 2009 MacBook Pro was getting to the point that it was painful to use. After installing this SSD my startup time has gone from 3 minutes to 15 seconds. Applications open almost immediately. It feels like it is a brand new MacBook.

The physical installation was super simple. I started it up and reinstalled the software and set it up as a brand new mac, and transferred everything that I wanted manually, leaving the SSD clutter free.

10/10!

Rating: 5/5 Great hard drive case January 16, 2017 I bought this case for an SSD I bought a while back and wasn't using, and I had decided to put it to use as a backup drive. The case seems well built and it came with the tools needed to install the drive. In less than 5 minutes I had inserted the drive, closed the case and plugged it into my Mac. It works perfectly.

Rating: 5/5 SSD is great, enclosure hmmm... January 15, 2017 The SSD upgrade is excellent. The enclosure is quite useful - however I had trouble for awhile before I figured out the cable was bad. The drive powered up but was not recognized. Luckily I had another cable and that fixed the problem. Also, I never got an answer to "what is Shipping Insurance"?

Rating: 5/5 Great Products backed by Excellent Support! January 10, 2017 I decided to give my older (but still vibrant) Mid 2009 MacBook Pro some help by getting it's tired, old, butt into better shape. I happened onto MacSales by chance, liked what I saw and ordered a 1 TB SSD and a RAM upgrade from 4gb to 8gb (it's maximum). I'm terrified of opening my computer fearful I will only do more damage and incur greater costs in repairs. I watched the videos on MacSales and they were both straightforward and seemed simple as well. I had no problem installing the new RAM - which gave me the courage to tackle the Hard Drive the week after. Whenever I had a question or hit a snag, MacSales Support personnel were available all the time by chat or phone and all of them were helpful and friendly. The laptop has gotten a much needed kick in the pants and both the new RAM and SSD have performed brilliantly. I'm a more than happy customer and I will be back when I'm ready to perform similar magic on my Mac Pro. Cheers to Macsales, their great products and excellent support!

Rating: 5/5 Mac runs like new! January 9, 2017 This kit, and the accompanying install videos, made replacing the dying drive in my MacBook Pro easy and efficient. As long as you have a solid backup of your data, it's simple. And having the external housing for the original drive made it possible for me to recover a few files that weren't in my last backup. Awesome.

Rating: 5/5 In love with my mid 2010 MacBook Pro again January 5, 2017 After installing sierra I thought my mbp was dead. After all, it is more than 6 years old. It was painfully slow & apps were quitting left & right. Chrome was unuseable. I took a chance and installed the full complement of ram, an ssd, and a new battery because mine was swollen & the trackpad didn't work. Now I'm in love with my Mac all over again--for well under $400. Installation was super easy & the update was seamless. I now have 500 gig internal & my old drive is external. I could have installed both internal but like having the DVD. Couldn't be happier with my purchase. It boots fast and runs all the apps I can throw at it.

Rating: 5/5 Great SSD January 2, 2017 My Mac Book Pro Late 2008 is running like a different computer. I went from a 240GD HD to the 480GB SSD and the results are amazing. Did not take long at all to clone and install. The enclosure will allow me yo use my old drive as a back up.

Rating: 5/5 Great warranty and install kit. December 31, 2016 I give this product for value and function 5*. I will say that OWC should find a way to be more transparent about speed. This would make comparison to other products easier. Performance of the drive is great.

Rating: 5/5 Wow! What a difference. December 30, 2016 My early 2008 macbook pro 15" seemed like it was on it's last leg. It took 4-5 minutes to boot and every app took a minute to boot. I put the 240G SSD in it and it's faster then when I first got it. It saved me from having to buy a new macbook pro.
