For maintenance purposes, most Drive Genius 4 utilities work on the primary startup drive "live" with no need for a secondary startup drive. However all repair and recovery utilities require starting your computer from a secondary drive so they can have exclusive access to your primary drive.
The utilities that require a secondary startup drive are:

- The whole-drive Secure Erase option.
* Fusion and SSD (solid-state drives) do not need to be defragmented.

Learn to use OSX tools and Carbon Copy Instead

I had a compatibility issue with Cubase 8.5 and Drive Genius. I wound up having to start from scratch. I found that Carbon Copy makes a better back up app and the tools already available in OSX work fine. Who knows why DG hosed up Cubase? I dont know why....but it did.

No More Beach Balls

I bought this because my laptop hard drive was sluggish and I kept seeing beachballs. Conventional wisdom is that Macs don't need defragging, but I found that it does when the hard drive is too full. I determined it had only 15% available so wound up buying this software on sale (YES) because it offered several solutions for freeing up space and caring for the computer after installation. I did have to defrag twice. The first time the visual display was incomplete and a 12GB .mov which is about old family 35mm movies converted to DVD was apparently a problem. I deleted it and that allowed the hard drive to sort correctly. I do want to say it has "Bootwell" which I found a bit confusing is an improvement over the other versions instructions on creating external bootable drive on a thumb drive. I downloaded on a Saturday and the activation code didn't come until Monday. I would recommend this item to a friend!
