This card has triple the VRAM and the performance improvement is obvious. Renders video much more quickly. No drivers required. Rating: 4/5 Great upgrade for 2009/12 Mac Pro and 4K January 1, 2017 Wanted a 32-inch 4K display for my music studio to replace 27-inch Apple Cinema Display (new 4K same price as 2K, so why not!). So, added this card to my 2009 8-core Mac Pro bought from Apple in 2011 (flashed to 5,1 and upgraded to 12 core to make 2012 model, technically).

This works great with BENQ 32-inch 4K display.

CAVEAT: had lots of 'sync' problems with mini-dp to DP, and min-dp to mini-dp. Solution was to get Cable Matters Gold Plated DVI-D Dual Link Cable with Ferrites 10 Feet; and amazing fix.

So, if you run into the "flashing" issue with mini-DP to DP cable, get the dual link DVI-D.

With Geekbench 4, the video score went from 22,737 with an Apple 5570 card to 88,635 with this card. The GT120 I started with isn't even worth testing for speed ;-)

Rating: 4/5 It works though I did not feel change November 13, 2016 I used early 2009 mac Pro with 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon and 32GB 1066MHz DDR3 RAM. I already changed my system HD to SSD 480GB. I used to upgrade my graphic card from ATI Radeon HD 4870 to ATI Radeon HD 5870, which I bought from apple store in 2012. The older HD4870 still worked on the other computer for window system till now. HD5870 broke, so I bought this product. In fact, I could not find any other place to buy a new graphic card suitable to my aging Mac Pro, which just said bye bye to the update of the latest macOS. I used Bridge and cameraRAW CS6 to figured out my RAW files of photography. I did not feel change between 5870 and 7950 except I heard the sound of fan more frequentIy. Probably I should take time to clean my Mac Pro. I tried to learn Lightroom 6 recently. I found the managing velocity of Lightroom was a little too slow compared to the camera RAW. I did not had experience of Lightroom with HD5870. Maybe my CPU affected this more.

Rating: 5/5 Faster processing in Photoshop and Lightroom September 20, 2016 I have a 2011 Mac Pro that has received many upgrades, The last was replacing the stock video card with the Sapphire 7950 graphics card. OWC's trade-in deal went smoothly and quickly. It made the Sapphire's cost more affordable.

The Sapphire is a good addition to my E2 PCI Express SSD upgrade and makes Photoshop and Lightroom much faster now (my primary apps on this Mac). These upgrades will extend the useful life of this 2011 machine many years. I prefer the Mac Pro platform over some of the newer machines for ease of upgradeability and usefulness. OWC has all the hardware to make my old computer run like a new one, at much less cost.

Rating: 4/5 brings life to pre-2013 mac pros April 9, 2016 I purchased this card for a 2009 MacPro as an upgrade from a 5770 model that was one of two upgrade cards available at the time. this was 2 years ago. the card continues to keep my 2009 MP running smoothly. In conjunction with OWC's Mercury Accelsior SSD Blades, SSD's and 16gigs of Ram - it runs comparable to my 2013 iMac.

*My experience with gaming in bootcamp on windows 7 -- this performs slightly better than on OS X 10.11. Personally, i'd like to gripe that this has to do with apple's drivers vs windows drivers. Also, like any fan, this can be very audible on high processing.

Though pricey vs the PC counterpart - i would recommend this for anyone trying to extend the life of their pre-2013 MacPros.

I get Audio (under El Capitan) through both HDMI and Mini DisplayPorts. It handles both of my 27-inch Apple LED Cinema Displays at the same time without a hitch. The installation was a breeze and I immediately noticed an improvement in my video playback—namely GoPro clips and a few choice games. Rating: 5/5 Very Quiet February 13, 2016 First, if you've never replaced the video card on the MacPro 2010 model, I would recommend looking at one of the the YouTube videos which show the installation of the HD 7950. I don't think I can link to it, but I saw a video by someone named DJAJ101 and it was perfect (I had called OWC and, while my rep was very polite, he wasn't much help and forwarded me an OWC video which was of even less help because it didn't tell you how to remove and replace the card :-) The YouTube video is better than the manual provided by Sapphire which could just be clearer about this simple process).

Second, once installed the Mac recognized the card and all seems well. It's very quiet. Of course, I've only had the card installed for 24 hours so I can't comment about quality or durability or how much performance has improved. I want to hold onto this MacPro for as long as possible (it's just so easy to get inside and add/replace stuff) and while my former card was working fine I figured a power boost couldn't hurt.

Of course, the shipping and ordering from OWC was very easy, as I've come to expect.

Rating: 4/5 It Just Works... January 1, 2016 I've been sitting on a decision to upgrade my Mac Pro's video card for more than a year until I could not wait any longer. My system is a Mac Pro Mid 2010 with eight cores and 24 GB RAM. I use Mavericks and Windows 10 on a separate hard drive( in BootCamp). My reluctance was due to the uncertainty of the 7950 working under BootCamp. Also I had heard people with issues from the card's Windows/Mac mode switch and other odd production issues. Well. the OWC order process was seamless. I got the card in like three days, installed it fine and did not touch the Mode Switch. Mavericks did not require drivers that came from the included CD. OS X had them already. The big concern was Windows. I booted into Windows 10 and noticed Windows did not have the proper driver. The screen resolution was big. So I went to the place where Hardware Devices are under My Computer Properties and told it to look for changes. Windows found the new video card and updated the driver. I relied on its judgement to find the right drivers.

The Sapphire HD 7950 Mac Edition works flawlessly in both Mavericks and Windows. I play GTA V and it rocks!. I also use Premiere Pro and After Effects CS 6 on the Mac side without any issues. I lucked out. The card I got was flawless. I highly recommend this video card to any old time Mac user who wants to add new life to their tower Mac Pro.

Rating: 4/5 Solid upgrade for my Mac Pro 5,1 November 29, 2015 First let me talk about the positives with this card. This card is a BEAST. Not only for performance but sheer weight. It’s easily half-again heavier than the stock card. The card easily drives a 4k monitor like my Samsung U28E590D with great looking color. The installation into my MacPro 5,1 was straightforward with a solid fit, also.

And for those of you wondering if it works with El Capitan: YES it works with El Capitan and Yosemite..

Now for a some caveats:

First. there is NO HDMI Audio with the card for Yosemite without a hack that will no longer work with El Capitan (thanks to SIP on El Capitan). Apple now only supports kernel extensions for the cards that *it* sold or with chipsets that *it* supports. So while the stock video card HDMI audio worked well, the Sapphire does not at all.

Next, This is not an Apple-endorsed card or one that apple sold. You will find that when you run the Apple Hardware Test with this card installed the AHT will fail with an error like this:

Alert! Apple Hardware Test has detected an error.

4SNS/1/C0000008: Te1S—124

This error after some research on Google shows that it is failing a PCI sensor test. Further research also shows the underlying reason: The sensor and EFI system doesn’t recognize this card so it generates an error basically saying something “doesn’t look right”. Other hardware diagnostic tools available for the mac will show that after the computer starts everything is working as expected including PCI sensors.

Finally there’s one more problem - you might find that the card fails EFI boot and the Mac “chime” sound on startup echoes and echoes requiring another power down and restart. This will depend on the screen you’re using and the port on the card. While the card supports Display Port 1.2 (and is backward-compatible with DP 1.1) the Mac Pro EFI implementation in the older macs does not recognize DP 1.2 at all and DP 1.1 is a bit half-baked based on my tests. The result is that DP 1.1 can be a bit iffy depending on the display screen being used. In the case of my Samsung display that was the case. The end fix for me was to use an HDMI cable with the display. Your own results may vary of course.

All in all, this is a great upgrade to the stock cards and will add years to your Mac Pro.
