Introduction

1.1 System Requirements

Operating System & Hardware

  • Works with any USB-A equipped:
    • Mac: macOS 10.3 and later
    • PC: Windows 7 and later
    • Chromebook: current operating system version recommended
    • iPad: current operating system version recommended
    • Linux: current operating system version recommended

Supported Drives

  • 2.5"/3.5"/5.25" IDE/ATA/ATAPI HDDs/Optical Drives.
  • 2.5"/3.5"/5.25" SATA SSDs/HDDs/Optical Drives.

NOTE: Only compatible with full-height 5.25" optical drives. Not compatible with slimline optical drives such as those used in a laptop.

1.3 Overview

A. (1) USB 3.2 Gen 1 Connector: Connect the Universal Drive Adapter to your computer using this port. (Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1)

B. (1) 40-pin ATA Connector: Use this connector to attach 3.5” and 5.25” IDE/ATA/ATAPI hard drives and optical drives.

C. (1) SATA Cable Connector: Use this connector to attach all drives that use a standard SATA connection.

D. (1) 44-pin ATA Connector: Use this connector to attach 2.5” IDE/ATA hard drives.

E. (1) Device Status LED Indicator: Displays solid blue when connected into a USB port and is drawing power. Blinks when data is being transferred.

Getting Started

2.1 Device Setup

  • The NWT Universal Drive Adapter is designed to be used on a temporary basis. The adapter does not have an enclosure to protect drive mechanisms from damage due to electrostatic discharge. NWT recommends placing the drive on a static-free work surface when using it with the NWT Universal Drive Adapter.

5.25" and 3.5" IDE/ATA/ATAPI Drive Setup

1. Ensure the drive is set to 'Master or 'Single Drive' mode before connecting the NWT Universal Drive Adapter. Jumper settings vary by manufacturer. Please consult the drive manufacture's manual for proper jumper settings.

2. Connect the power supply into an AC outlet and then connect the power supply to the four-pin power connector on the drive.

  • NOTE: Power needs to be connected first. The drive will not be recognized by the computer if data is connected first.
  • NOTE: There is an on/off switch on the power supply cable. Make sure that this switch is set to the ‘on’ position.

3. Connect the IDE/ATA extension cable to the 40-pin ATA connector on the NWT Universal Drive Adapter and then connect the drive to the extension cable.

  • NOTE: The connectors are keyed to prevent devices from being plugged in upside-down. Double check the orientation if experiencing trouble connecting the cable.

4. Connect the USB 3.2 Gen 1 cable into the USB 3.2 Gen 1 port on the NWT Universal Drive Adapter. Then connect the cable to an computer's available USB port.

  • NOTE: Allow up to 30 seconds for your drive to mount as an external USB device.

2.5" IDE/ATA/ATAPI Drive Setup

1. Connect the drive to the 44-pin ATA connector on the NWT Universal Drive Adapter.

  • NOTE: The connectors are keyed to prevent devices from being plugged in upside-down. Double check the orientation if experiencing trouble connecting the cable.

2. Connect the USB 3.2 Gen 1 cable into the USB 3.2 Gen 1 port on the NWT Universal Drive Adapter. Then connect the cable to an computer's available USB port.

  • NOTE: Allow up to 30 seconds for your drive to mount as an external USB device.
  • NOTE: 2.5" IDE/ATA/ATAPI drives connected to the NWT Universal Drive Adapter receive power through the USB cable attached to the computer. If the drive is not receiving enough power, Connect the Universal Drive Adapter to a different USB port if the drive is not receiving enough power.

2.5"/3.5"/5.25 SATA Drive Setup

1. Connect the power supply into an AC outlet and then connect the power supply to the power cable portion of the SATA combination power and data cable.

  • NOTE: Power needs to be connected first. The drive will not be recognized by the computer if data is connected first.
  • NOTE: There is an on/off switch on the power supply cable. Make sure that this switch is set to the ‘on’ position.

2. Connect the SATA combination power and data cable into the drive.

3. Connect the SATA data cable portion into the SATA connector on the NWT Universal Drive Adapter.

4. Connect the USB 3.2 Gen 1 cable into the USB 3.2 Gen 1 port on the NWT Universal Drive Adapter. Then connect the cable to an computer's available USB port.

  • NOTE: Allow up to 30 seconds for your drive to mount as an external USB device.

  • Verify all cables are securely connected.
  • Power must be connected first for configurations that use the power supply.
  • Connect to a different USB port on the computer if the drive isn't being recognized or receiving power.

General Use Precautions

  • To avoid damage, do not expose the device to temperatures outside the following ranges:
    • Environmental (Operating)
      • Temperature (ºF): 41º — 95º
      • Temperature (ºC): 5º — 35º
    • Environmental (Non-Operating)
      • Temperature (ºF): -4º — 140º
      • Temperature (ºC): -20º — 60º
    • Always unplug the device from the electrical outlet if there is a risk of lightning or if it will be unused for an extended period-of-time. Otherwise, there is an increased risk of electrical shock, short-circuiting, or fire.
    • Protect your device from excessive exposure to dust during use or storage. Dust can build up inside the device, increasing the risk of electrical shock, short-circuiting, or fire.

    Safety Precautions

    • Use proper anti-static precautions when handling this device. Failure to do so can increase the risk of electrical shock or short-circuiting.
    • Never expose your device to rain, or use it near water, or in damp wet conditions. Never place objects containing liquids on the device, as they may spill everywhere and into the openings. This will increase the risk of electrical shock, short-circuiting, fire, or personal injury.
    • To avoid any risk of electrical shock, short-circuiting, fire, or dangerous emissions, never insert any metallic object into the device.
    • Please cease use of the device and contact OWC Support if it appears to be malfunctioning.
