iMac (2011) Upgrade Service FAQs »

eSATA
Select use of SATA 3.0 or 2.0 port for eSATA
All 2011 iMacs have a total of three SATA ports, two ports are higher performance SATA 3.0 6Gb/s (up to 600MB/s) and one is a high performance SATA 2.0 3Gb/s (300MB/s) port. This upgrade utilizes one of these internal ports to provide an eSATA (External SATA) port on your mid-2011 'Thunderbolt' iMac 27" system. Please select the which speed SATA port to assign to eSATA.
Config Notes: When SATA 3.0 6Gb/s is selected for eSATA, one SATA 3.0 6Gb/s and one SATA 2.0 3Gb/s port will remain for other drive(s) inside your iMac.

What we recommend:
If your iMac will ultimately have 1 or less internal 6Gb/s SSDs – we recommend enabling the benefit of SATA 3.0 6Gb/s for the eSATA port.
If your iMac will ultimately have 2 internal 6Gb/s SSDs – we highly recommend utilizing SATA 2.0 for the eSATA port and getting the full benefit 6Gb/s SSDs

Why we recommend this:
Today’s hard drives come no where near SATA 3.0 speeds and do not even maximize the capability of SATA 2.0. Apple’s Factory SSD is only a 3Gb/s SATA 2.0 device which receives no benefit when connected via a 6Gb/s capable SATA 3.0 port. By comparison, OWC 6Gb/s SSDs offer performance exceeding 500MB/s, taking exceptional advantage of a SATA 3.0 6Gb/s port, that would otherwise be restricted to a lower level of performance of less than 300MB/s when connected via SATA 2.0 3Gb/s port.
SSD Bay Drive Option
OWC is able to support up to two internal drives in addition to the eSATA port standard with this upgrade. Please make the appropriate selection for the SSD Bay drive location.
