Add a Second Drive to your Mac mini

Use the OWC Data doubler to install a second drive in the second drive bay in your 2011 or later Mac mini. This DIY kit includes all the tools necessary to complete the installation of the Data Doubler and the new drive. Coupled with our free installation videos that offer step-by-step instructions, you can perform the entire upgrade on your own.

Hard drives are an economical way to add significant storage. Already an amazing feat of engineering it's shocking so much power can be installed into the Mac mini with the OWC Data Doubler. It is simply the best way to expand the capacity and capability of your already powerful Mac mini. And even better, you can do it yourself!

The Right Tools for the Job

With the OWC 5-Piece Mini Toolkit, everything is included to complete the drive installation. Once the upgrade is complete, you'll have a handy set of tools for future computer upgrades.

Yes, You Can Do-It-Yourself

OWC is committed to your success. If you need a bit more guidance, simply contact OWC's award-winning U.S. based Technical Support. We'll be happy to answer any questions you may have.
While OWC encourages the DIY philosophy, this is a challenging install that requires advanced skills. If, after watching the how-to video, you are not fully confident of your ability to perform the installation, you can choose to have OWC "Do It For You" via our Apple Mac mini Installation Service.
  1. A small number of 2012 units were shipped with the drive mounted in the upper drive bay rather than the more typical lower bay shown in this video. If you have a 2012 or later model, you will want to determine the configuration of your Mac mini's drives prior to ordering. To do this, open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app and click on the grey drive icon at the left-edge of the window. If you see "Lower" after the "Connection ID" at the bottom-left corner of the window, you may proceed using the standard installation instructions. If you see "Upper" then you have a special configuration which will need additional components, and you will need to also refer to the Addendum video.
  2. Before attempting this installation, OWC recommends watching the associated instructional video in its entirety to determine your ability to perform this complex procedure. OWC assumes no responsibility for damage that may occur during the install.

Always satisfied with doing business with OWC.

I haven't installed the drive yet but I'm sure it will work fine. The only issue I have is once the drive is installed, it appears that in order to merge the two drives is to erase all data on the original drive. Since I'm using this Mac Mini as a media server & have almost 2T of media data on the original drive, I will have to re-install all the media & reconfigure Apple TV & Apple Music again with all my folders etc. Not to mention re-installing my Video & CD programs along with all my other applications on the drive. It appears there is no way around it from everything I have read & researched. Regardless, I'll run out of space very soon & will have no choice but to bite the bullet & do it.

Fatter Mac Mini, pocketbook not maimed

The price was right. The videos gave me confidence. Still took me 2 weeks to work up courage to do it. I did need some younger eyes to help reconnect two of the cables. Light + magnification would have done the trick. Something like a pencil eraser to press a plug to a socket may help. Was unprepared for the dust bunnies under the cover. Suggest you have some canned air or a gentle vacuum handy when you open your Mac. Also suggest to OWC that the points of the compass be marked on the Mac in the installation video, because the orientation changed a couple of times and I had to really stop and look carefully. Also helpful would be stills of how a plug should be oriented to a socket. Do I have mine reversed left right? Up down? Anyway, it all came out VERY well. Thank you!

challenging install in 2012 mac mini

I purchased this drive and the data doubler kit to upgrade my 2012 mac mini. am using this drive as an internal backup to the 1 TB SSD that I inserted. put the old spinning HDD in an external case as a way to hold on to current configuration until I am sure the new setup works perfectly. followed the instructions in the online video. compared these instructions to the same ones from ifixit.com. much preferred this style of presentation and especially appreciated the re assemble pathway after the drive installation. I hate it when i get the instruction to just do all the previous steps in the reverse order. having said that, this upgrade did take two hours for my first attempt inside a mini.

I would recommend this product to a friend!
