SoftRAID: Dual Enclosure Mount Issue

Issue

Customer is attempting to use two enclosures each with a SoftRAID volume, but only one volume can mount at a time.

Cause

The disks in the volumes have identical UUID's, so whichever is first recognized by the OS will mount and the other will not. Collect a tech support file. Look at the disk UUIDs. You should see the same set on the two enclosures, such as F7264, F7265, etc. Send me the support file if you see this behavior.

Solution

The customer will need to delete one of the volumes. Here is the process:

  1. Choose an enclosure / volume to delete.
  2. Restart and connect only that enclosure.
  3. Expand the disk tiles and write down the last 5 digits of a couple of the disks, so you can recognize them.
  4. Delete the volume (may need to disable Safeguard).
  5. Initialize the four disks.
  6. Expand the disk tiles and make sure they are now "different" than before. If so, great!
  7. Create a new volume.
  8. You can now connect both enclosures without a problem.
