After years of trying to make an iPad or iPad Pro work as a viable MacBook substitute, I finally decided this year that my next work computer would be a MacBook Pro rather than an iMac. Knowing about the keyboard issues with previous MacBook Pros, I also decided that I'd wait until the 16-inch MacBook Pro was released before making the switch from desktop to laptop. I had my order in to Apple for a "fairly loaded" MacBook Pro within minutes after hearing that it was available, and now I've been using the computer for about a week. In this First Impressions post, I'll provide my opinions on the newest MacBook Pro and also provide a few benchmarks showing just how powerful this portable workstation is.
Apple has been steadily moving away from products that users can upgrade themselves. This has been especially true with its lineup of MacBooks – they have been working to make them thinner, lighter, and more compact for years. In fact, parts have been soldered directly to the board in MacBook Pros since 2012. But since we have seen Apple once again implement user-accessible options in the new 2019 Mac Pro, might we get lucky with the new 16-inch MacBook Pro and a return to the glory days of DIY?
The long-awaited 16-inch MacBook Pro arrived today, touted by Apple as “by far the most powerful notebook we’ve ever made.” Probably the most desired feature of the new MacBook Pro is the new Magic Keyboard, which features a scissor mechanism with 1 mm of travel for responsive and quiet typing...without the mechanical issues of the troublesome butterfly-switch keyboard used on recent models. The new laptop replaces the 15-inch MacBook Pro and starts at $2,799.
Earlier this week, Adobe launched the latest version of the Creative Cloud suite, CC 2020. While we plan to offer a more detailed look at a later time, including the possibility of a couple competitive reviews (think Affinity apps), this article provides a quick overview. Overall this release is more about the improvement of existing functions and added stability and less about headline features. While that’s not as exciting to the average user, this approach is not a bad thing. For years, many long-time users complained that Adobe fell victim to the “feature bloat” trap. They perennially released new features that were designed to wow people (i.e., were easier to market) but which were either not often requested or not fully “baked.” In the meantime, many existing, commonly used features were not evolving.
