I received this approximately one week ago, and the installation of four 12TB hard drives was straightforward. I configured the four 12TB hard drives as a RAID-5 array, and the setup was successful. This configuration serves as an effective data backup solution, as it ensures that if one of the four 12TB hard drives fails, I can replace the failing drive with a new 12TB drive, and the RAID-5 array will be automatically rebuilt. While I am highly satisfied with the OWC storage device, I have noticed a persistent noise issue. The unit experiences periodic access, causing the disk heads to move and resulting in unwanted noises. Initially, I suspected this was due to macOS Spotlight indexing. However, after configuring Spotlight to exclude the RAID-5 device, the occasional noises persisted. Could this be a manifestation of SoftRAID attempting to utilize the RAID-5 configuration at certain times? I am uncertain about the cause, but I would appreciate clarification on the process that periodically accesses the Mercury Elite Pro Quad RAID-5 4-bay External Enclosure.
