ThunderBay 8
16.0TB Thunderbolt 3 Storage Solution

Professional Grade 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 Storage Solution
Like a Data Center on Your Desk
This latest addition to the popular ThunderBay line, introduced in 2014, now offers eight drive bays for either 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch HDDs and/or SSDs in any combination. The OWC ThunderBay 8 is like a high-performance personal data center that offers multiple configuration options to suit ever-expanding storage needs. Photo, film and video editors can take advantage of the largest capacity desktop RAID storage solution we’ve ever offered to handle the voracious drive space appetite of RAW, 4K, large format, and VR workflows.
Conquer High Bandwidth Demands
With Thunderbolt 3 offering real-world transfer rates up to 2586MB/s and the ability to RAID together eight SSDs or HDDs, ThunderBay 8’s rugged, field-tested aluminum design has the under-the-hood horsepower needed to conquer high-bandwidth requirements. You can even configure multiple ThunderBay 8 solutions connected via multiple Thunderbolt 3 ports on your Mac or PC to achieve exponential speed increases. Whatever your set up, when you’re racing against a deadline, ThunderBay 8 puts you in the winner’s circle.
Monstrous Capacity
Need even more capacity? Daisy-chain up to six of these capacity behemoths together for up to a staggering 768TB. Now you can capture vast amounts of footage from multiple cameras or store vast libraries of production work with a unified and reliable storage solution.
Includes SoftRAID XT: Easy and Complete Drive Management
SoftRAID XT is the most powerful, intuitive software RAID utility on the market. Multiple RAID options let you select the RAID level that fits you or your project’s needs best. If you need maximum volume capacity, optimum drive performance, data protection, or a combination of attributes, SoftRAID has you covered.
Packed with features like drive validation, verification and failure prediction—SoftRAID includes features you simply don’t get with hardware RAID. It’s like having a datacenter on your desktop! From home users looking to protect photos and documents to professionals needing to protect and quickly access projects, SoftRAID is the perfect solution.
  • Compatible: Works with macOS 11 Big Sur, M1 Macs and Windows 10
  • Advanced: Create RAID 0/1/4/5/1+0 (10) with Macs, RAID 0/1 with Windows machines
  • Protected: SoftRAID Monitor constantly watches your disks and alerts you if problems are detected
  • Validated: Volume validation ensures sectors can be read and parity is correct
  • Certified: Checks disks before use to ensure they are safe for data storage
  • Vigilant: Error prediction helps protect against unexpected failure
  • Universal: Move SoftRAID arrays seamlessly between Macs and PCs with built-in OWC MacDrive technology

SoftRAID provides a level of performance that you simply can’t get with hardware RAID. Learn more about the power of SoftRAID XT.
Swap and Identify Drives Easily
ThunderBay 8 makes it easy to keep large data sets organized for every project thanks to its eight hot swappable drive bays. Whether you’re using 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch HDDs and/or SSDs, the drives mount in alphabetically labeled trays for easy identification and are secured by a thumb screw. If you want the freedom to access an extensive collection of drives quickly, you can create a drive “bullpen” with additional OWC drive trays (sold separately).
As Secure as a Bank Vault
With a locking front panel and security slot on the backside, the ThunderBay 8 is like an ironclad vault l for your data. Plus, with front panel LEDs indicating the status of each drive, you’ll know at a glance if your data is secure.
See More, Do More
ThunderBay 8 isn’t just about high-capacity, high-performance storage. It’s about giving you all the options you need to work at your best. Attach a 5K Thunderbolt display or two 4K displays. Place a USB 3.1 device at the end of a daisy chain. With an extra Thunderbolt 3 port, you have the flexibility to add more devices to your workflow and master any task at hand.
Secure Your Workflow with OWC ClingOn
Greatly reduce — if not eliminate — cable strain and accidental disconnects with the OWC ClingOn. These custom cable stabilizers (sold separately) screw into the ThunderBay 8's housing to secure your Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C connections and prevent work session interruption and possible data loss.
Your Digital Life…Protected for FREE
Your data is irreplaceable, and we take protecting it seriously. That’s why this OWC Solution includes Acronis True Image OEM — the world’s only combination backup and antimalware solution that keeps your data protected from accidents, failures, and malware/ransomware attacks.
  • Easy: Protect everything – photos, files, applications, systems, and the devices they’re on in just a few clicks
  • Efficient: create “set and forget” backups to recover and restore files and folders
  • Secure: Stop ransomware and cryptojacking attacks from harming your device data and backup

Rating: 5/5 Excellent product from an excellent company June 7, 2021 I have been purchasing high end RAID and Hard Drive systems from OWC/MACSALES For 15 years and they never disappoint. I am quite technical and appreciate good equipment which is reliable and i have never had any issues with their products. Thanks again...Steve H.

Rating: 5/5 Great RAID! Easy Setup! May 27, 2021 This is my first purchase of a RIAD which I now need for the amount of video, photo processing and digital artwork I do. I knew what a RAID was but never owned one or set one up. The folks at OWC made sure it was a seamless experience for me. I was up and running inside of a day and was fully operational by the next day's work. Both their sales and technical staff are very knowledgeable and helpful from initial purchase through installation. OWC has become my go to place since converting everything to Apple a while back. Top notch service, reasonable prices and staff willing to hold the hands of a novice to get them up to speed. Highly recommended!

Rating: 5/5 Not cheap, but works great April 28, 2021 I had 2 OWC ThunderBay Four-Bay units attached to my 2018 Mac Mini to create storage for video editing and photo/media storage. They are Thunderbolt-1 devices and I had them daisy-chained then connected to the Mini via a TB1 to TB3 adapter cable. That worked well, but I decided to replace and older NAS by adding some disks and SoftRAID to my media server. So, I replaced the 2 Four-Bay units with one Eight-Bay device which freed-up the older units for other uses. The conversion was simple: I just put the 8 drives from the 2 units into this single device and powered it up; SoftRaid automatically found all the drives and I was set. The performance of a single, direct, Thunderbolt-3 connection is better than the daisy chained TB1 devices. My home Media server (an older Mac Mini with TB1 ports) now has its own 4-drive bay storage, and I have a spare that I have yet to find a use for. I was super happy that I did not have to do any sort of backup/restore or high volume data transfers to get my existing drives to work in the new unit.

Rating: 5/5 Elegant, easy to migrate, quiet, zero issues September 2, 2020 I had worked my set of first 2 and then 4 4-bay Mercury Elite Pro Qx2's for years, and was starting to see some issues -- once OWC tech support verified that there seemed to be some problems with one of the drives, I decided it was time to refresh and reduce space consumption. So I bought the 8-port Thunderbay. It appeared the next morning, out of the box and onto my desk and installed and running. I downloaded the softraid package, found the serial number on a label on the back of the chassis (actually had to ask support to figure that out), and migrated my data over from the four bays. Since I bought much larger drives, I also gave myself much-needed room to grow. It's much quieter than the prior models despite twice the drives, perhaps because it gave a bit more headroom for air flow allowing them to slow fans down? I've had nothing but reliable products and excellent service for more than 10 years and lots of products from OWC. Happy to support them.

Rating: 4/5 High Quality 8-Bay TB3 Enclosure July 6, 2020 I like this enclosure a lot. It's very well constructed, operates reliably, offers high bandwidth data rates, and provides lots of room for expansion. On the hardware side, OWC gets 5 stars out of 5.

However, the only way to achieve data transfer rates commensurate with an enclosure this expensive is (a) to install all SSD's (wrong product for that), and/or (b) to employ drive striping. Basically, the more drives your data is striped across the higher the data transfer rate. So RAID, right?

Problem is, SoftRAID 5.x comes with its own set of issues. While I couldn't initially get it to work under Catalina (probably a driver load problem), it doesn't yet support APFS or RAID volume expansion. For some that may not be a big issue, but HFS is a verrry old file system and expanding your RAID volume over time is just sort of an assumed feature. That plus little-to-no documentation, no recommended or use-case best practices, a funky old UX design, and an annual reliance on SoftRAID updates to keep current with Apple's OS releases have left me ... cautious.

Now the SoftRAID folks have been promising to support APFS and RAID expansion in their next 6.0 release, but that chatter has been going on for at least 3 years now with no firm release date in sight (now supposedly after macOS 11.0 hits). And while I could (and may) setup an HFS RAID 5 now and convert it to APFS next year once v6 is out and debugged, I bought an 8-bay enclosure with 64TB volumes in mind and can't imagine what such a transfer might entail time/risk-wise, should file system translation even be supported.

So while the hardwire gets 5 stars, SoftRAID is at best a 2, and having weighed all their issues against my needs (large file server), I'm left thinking a Synology NAS solution might have been the better choice overall.

Rating: 5/5 Great Solution For Work From Home May 16, 2020 We had to move our TV series off server to work from home during COVID. This required 96TB of enterprise quality storage that could be partitioned 16 ways (maximum purchase software would recognize). Once we got it all moved over I had access to the entire media server from work at home. SoftRAID is a great tool. It allows me to replace individual drives if necessary with no loss of function (RAID5).

Rating: 5/5 This Mega Drive dock rocks! April 22, 2020 Having owned a a previous ThunderBay 4 bay model with Thunderbolt 2 for my 2013 "trash can" Mac Pro I decided I needed something more up to date speed wise for my new 2020 Mac Pro, so this around I went with the new ThunderBay 8. I have to say this puppy is rock solid, plus having access to 8 3.5" or 2.5" drives at Thunderbolt 3 speeds is just fantastic!

The profile is surprisingly very manageable and fit into my ISO box perfectly. It appears to be the same tried and true design as my old model which worked perfectly from day one for nearly 4 years and is still going strong, so I'm guessing the same will be true for this new one as well.

My only complaint is that I can't see the individual drive LEDs through the face plate cover grid as easily as I'd like when looking from a side view, which was not an issue with my previous ThunderBay 3 model, but now I'm just nitpicking.

Seriously, if you need Thunderbolt 3 access to a lot of drives RAID based or not, you'll love the new ThunderBay 8, its a mega drive dock that totally rocks!!!

Highly recommended!
