Can I use a newer Thunderbolt (USB-C) device with my older Thunderbolt 2/Thunderbolt (mDP) Mac?
It Depends...
OWC Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) devices are backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 2/Thunderbolt (mDP) equipped Macs. If you want to incorporate a newer Thunderbolt 3 external drive or dock into a Thunderbolt 2/Thunderbolt workflow, you will need a certified Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter and a Thunderbolt 2 cable. It's that easy – you'll get data transfer up to 20Gb/s (Thunderbolt 2 speeds).
One note on power delivery – The Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter doesn't doesn't support it. If you're connecting a Thunderbolt 3 device to a Thunderbolt 2/Thunderbolt Mac, the Thunderbolt 3 device must be self-powered. Likewise, if the Thunderbolt 3 device is capable of power delivery, you won't be able to use this feature to power your Thunderbolt 2/Thunderbolt Mac.
Lastly, Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) and Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) devices are not compatible with Thunderbolt/Thunderbolt 2 Mac models.
