On a Windows PC, you may encounter this error: "This device cannot find enough free resources that in can use. (Code 12)"
The external graphics card (eGPU) is listed in the Device Manager with a yellow exclamation mark and when checking the Properties for more details, this is the error displayed under device status. Following is a list of tips that can be used to troubleshoot this issue.
Software updates
- Update the BIOS of your computer
- Update the Thunderbolt software and firmware (if available) of your computer
- Install all the latest updates for your Operating System (OS)
- Uninstall the driver for the external graphics card and reinstall the latest version
- If the problem started after updating one of the software above, go back to the previous version
Internal graphics card
- Using the Device Manager, disable the internal graphics card
- Restart your system and then reconnect your external graphics card
Hot plug
Test both cold start and hot plug:
- Connect and turn on the eGPU prior to starting up the computer. If it does not boot into Windows, enter the BIOS settings and disable Thunderbolt Boot Support.
- Boot into Windows and when ready, connect the eGPU.
Uninstall the eGPU device
- Open the device manger and select the eGPU under Display adapters
- Right-click on it and choose Uninstall device
- Turn off the eGPU and unplug it
- Restart the computer (not always required)
- Reconnect the eGPU and turn on the power
- Let it install the device automatically
- Check if your eGPU is now working correctly
These steps may have to be repeated when the computer is next restarted.
Compatibility
If none of the above has fixed the problem, we recommend contacting the manufacturer of your PC or motherboard for further assistance. This may require a BIOS update, a specific configuration in the BIOS or it is not supported on that particular computer. Your journey may vary depending on the computer, graphics card and software used.
