Is that a deivce that needs power or does it get it from the USB port?
What we really need is a very simple 2.5″ SATA with power adapter to a single USB pr FireWire plug that is bus powered. A simple as possible. So you can just plug a laptop drive into your laptop and power the drive you want to back up to. Everyone is over thinking these devices and they are a mess.
While the UDA does require a power connection for SATA devices and 3.5″ drives, we have long carried devices like you’re talking about – bus-powered, firewire and/or USB, for 2.5″ SATA drives.
They’re our external 2.5″ drive enclosures, and we have them for as low as $10. You can either mount the drive in there permanently, or you can just attach the drive to the board and swap them around as needed.
The UDA is designed for those who encounter a wide variety of drives, both PATA and SATA. Many techs find this tool to be useful; I know I have. If you’re only encountering one kind of drive in one size, a more specialized option, like the enclosures mentioned above, may be more in line for you.
