There’s a good chance you were spending the holiday yesterday in the company of your irreplaceable family members and friends. There’s also a good chance you were too busy to spend any time with something else that’s irreplaceable – your data.
March 31 was World Backup Day – a yearly tradition that serves as a friendly reminder for you to double-check your backups or establish a backup plan for your important data if you haven’t already done so. And despite the spirit of today’s tradition, having reliable backup options is no joke.
Computers are constantly becoming more intertwined with our daily lives. They are modern substitutes for our photo albums, bookshelves and file cabinets. And we simply can’t risk losing our pictures, videos, music or other important documents. Of course, with proper backup, you can protect yourself against hardware malfunctions, viruses, corruption, or even theft.
There are plenty of ways you can secure your data. And luckily, OWC has everything you need to make sure your computer’s data is backed up and secure, including hard drives and external storage solutions so you can take your data anywhere you need it.
So, even though World Backup Day was yesterday, there’s still time to guard against any disaster. Remember, it’s never too late to protect your data … until it’s too late.
Great article, thanks.. I have both Windows and Macs to keep backed-up. Can I use the same medium and software to store back-ups for both ? And can I easily restore either from it?
Hello MickH
OWC currently does not sell a cross-platform backup software that is compatible with both Mac OS and Windows OS. OWC does however bundle backup software programs that work individually for both Mac OS and Windows OS that are sold with OWC and NewerTech external drive solutions.
If you are going to backup multiple computers to a single drive, I would recommend setting up separate partitions on the external drive for each computer that you are planning on backing up. I would also recommend purchasing MediaFour MacDrive for any windows machines that you intend to backup. MacDrive allows Windows machines to access Mac OS formatted drives without limitation. The OWC software bundle that we include with our external drive solutions includes Data Backup 3 for Mac OS and Novastor for Windows.
Was looking at your RAID systems for an offline storage & backup drive, but they haven’t gotten an update in a while…
And do not forget a good backup software combination. I have tested Time Machine, SuperDuper!, Carbon Copy Cloner and Retrospect. Only Time Machine and SuperDuper! generated backups free of serious troubles. With the other applications, some backups got corrupted and not even DiskWarrior could fix such drives. I have learned my lesson well.
