Following its announcement of the new M4 iPad Air, Apple today annnounced the new iPhone 17e. The latest “e” model replaces last year’s iPhone 16e, which received praise for the features it did pack, including a very capable camera and the latest generation of A-Series, chips. Overall however, it was a lukewarm reception due to the $599 price tag and lack of MagSafe and other niceties.
The good news with the iPhone 17e is that Apple heard the feedback loud and clear. The 17e is a meaningfully upgraded device that addresses most of the criticisms leveled at its predecessor, and it’s doing all of it at the same starting price of $599.
What’s New: More Than Just a Chip Swap
The iPhone 17e gets Apple’s latest A19 chip, built on 3-nanometer technology with a 6-core CPU and 4-core GPU. That’s the same chip family powering the non-pro iPhone 17 models, and it brings serious performance gains. Apple says the CPU is up to 2x faster than iPhone 11’s processor. The 16-core Neural Engine is optimized for Apple Intelligence features, making this phone more than capable of handling AI tasks on-device.
But the A19 is only part of the story. Here’s where things get genuinely interesting.

MagSafe is finally here
This was the biggest complaint about the 16e, and Apple has corrected course. The 17e supports MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging at up to 15W — double the 7.5W Qi wireless charging the 16e offered. That means snapping on a MagSafe charger, wallet, case, or any of the hundreds of accessories in the ecosystem is now possible on Apple’s most affordable iPhone. iPhone 17e also remains fast charging capable. With a 20W or higher USB-C adapter, plugging in the 17e can charge it to 50 percent in around 30 minutes.
Ceramic Shield 2 brings serious durability
The 17e now features the same Ceramic Shield 2 front cover found across the full iPhone 17 family. Apple says the new coating provides 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation, along with improved anti-reflection to reduce glare. For a phone positioned as an accessible, long-lasting device, this is a very welcome addition.
The Rest of the Package
Beyond those headline additions, the 17e delivers a solid all-around spec sheet. The 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display reaches up to 1200 nits peak HDR brightness. Face ID and the Action button round out a familiar but refined design made from aerospace-grade aluminum with an IP68 water resistance rating.
The camera system centers on a single 48MP Fusion camera. If this shooter is anything like last years, it will make a lot of users very happy. Plus, even though you only have the one lens, the Fusion camera captures enough resolution that it can perform double duty as an optical quality 2x Telephoto. Plus, Apple says portrait mode has been improved with a more advanced image pipeline that recognizes people, dogs, and cats, and automatically saves depth data so you can apply or adjust background blur after the fact. Video tops out at 4K with Dolby Vision at 60fps, and Spatial Audio is supported for AirPods and Apple Vision Pro users. This remains a very capable camera system for such a low price point.
On the connectivity side, the 17e features C1X, Apple’s latest cellular modem, which is up to 2x faster than the C1 in the 16e and uses 30 percent less energy than the modem found in iPhone 16 Pro. That efficiency contributes to all-day battery life, and Apple’s satellite features: Emergency SOS, Messages, Roadside Assistance, and Find My via satellite. All are included free for two years after activation.
The phone ships with iOS 26, bringing the new Liquid Glass design language, Live Translation, improved Visual Intelligence, Call Screening, and Hold Assist.
Storage Doubles at the Same Price
One more detail worth highlighting: base storage jumps from 128GB to 256GB at the same $599 starting price, with a 512GB option also available. That’s a meaningful improvement for anyone who takes a lot of photos and videos.
Pre-Order and Availability
iPhone 17e will be available in black, white, and a new soft pink with a premium matte finish. Pre-orders open Wednesday, March 4, with availability starting March 11 in more than 70 countries and regions.
Pricing starts at $599 (or $24.95/month over 24 months). Trade-in credits through carriers go as high as $599 with an iPhone 13 trade-in, and Apple Trade In offers up to $195 for the same device.
Bottom Line
The iPhone 16e was a hard sell for anyone who knew what was missing. The iPhone 17e is a much easier one. MagSafe, fast charging, Ceramic Shield 2, doubled base storage, the A19 chip, and the C1X modem—all at the same $599 entry price—make this a compelling option for budget-conscious buyers who still want a full iPhone 17 experience. Pre-orders open Wednesday, and this one is worth a serious look.
